Raja said he would be busy till first week of January. We can skip first round and he would back-fill two picks on next turn.

Thanks for running this, Ted.
I open with Syd Barnes.
27 Tests -> 189 wickets.
Try beating that!
No, don't even bother! :-)

Re: 2017 TEST DRAFT (50 cap limit)
Good, this draft can get off to a racing start.
I'll go with Andy Roberts, part of the West Indies fast bowling revolution of the 70s.
47 matches and 202 wickets including 11 five-fers.
(I changed my mind twice before picking this one),.
SGs TURN!

Is Misty playing? there is a slot available after Sg and after Verity. Until he confirms though we shall assume he is not playing.

Glenn Turner as my first opener! 41 test matches, 2991 runs at 44. The ultimate cultured craftsman and therefore a batsman with style particularly to my liking.

I had no idea Roberts played so few games. But then I suppose that wasn't such a low total for a man of his talent in those days.
Will they ever make WSC count as FC statistics I wonder

Ofcourse anyone is welcome to join in at any stage, just post on this thread.

Are we happy to have general draft discussions here too? I know it makes teds job harder but I think it makes it more friendly and less sterile than having a separate banter thread
Because I've definitely picked the best opener so far!

Re: 2017 TEST DRAFT (50 cap limit)
It would be more fun if we kept out current players (maybe have a rule that the player should have played his last Test before 31-12-2014 or something like that) but since we didn't put this rule in before we started the draft, I guess we'll have to accommodate current players. *sigh*

Glenn Turner is a decent pick, no doubt, but there are plenty of other openers out there. :-)

Yes, glad to have you, the more the merrier.
I'm going to show the updated order in my next post.
louie_db9 wrote:By the way are you allowed to have current players who have played fewer than 50 Tests?
Yes. Although if you pick someone who goes over the limit before this game finishes - then they are eliminated. (And there is one prominent name who probably will).
BoyCaught30 wrote:Are we happy to have general draft discussions here too?!
Sure, why not, if we keep updateing the table every page it should be ok, hopefully.

I hadnt thought of that but at the same time some people will pick players from before the war when first class cricket was the pinnacle of cricket and tests were a novelty.

Re: 2017 TEST DRAFT (50 cap limit)
Weekes and Walcott were expected early first-round picks.
Roberts is a high-quality quick but went much quicker than I expected.
As did Glenn Turner.
I guess it has to do with strategy.
Ted probably wanted to go for a quality quick first, and Boycs30 wanted an opener first (since these are usually in short supply).
Middle-order batsmen tend to be more in number.
Having said that, Weekes and Walcott are right up there, so leaving them for the second round was never going to happen.

Re: 2017 TEST DRAFT (50 cap limit)
As for Syd Barnes, I picked him only because he is considered by many as the greatest Test bowler in history.
The Bradman of bowlers.
I feel I've already won the draft but I'll go through the motions and pick 10 other players. :-)

I struggle with openers in previous drafts so I was thinking of nabbing both mine early and then hunting for a spinner. Plus, opening batsmen are my favourite cricketers.
The 1930-1965 period I'm hoping will be rich pickings because of the amount of quality players and the fewer Tests played per year mean lots of options.
Middle order be dammed.

That's fair. I struggle a bit when using my phone too.
Ashwin is a good shout.
I'm researching so many good historical players and being surprised that so many played less than fifty tests.
I can't believe Andy Roberts didn't play 70-odd matches.
