Michael Vaughan
I was watching some highlights of Vaughan's centuries in the '03 and '05 Ashes, struck by the realisation that his career is almost moving into the era of 'classic cricket' given that much of it was over 12 years ago now - which in itself gave me pause! - but I was also struck by the fact that his batting when on form and in full flow was actually quite something to watch. I would imagine that the most enjoyable highlights package of England batsmen from 2000 to 2010 probably comprises of Vaughan and Ian Bell when they're both on form striking centuries.
Opening the innings at the SCG, swivel-pulling a six when England are on 9/0. The cover drive at 00:52 in the video is simply glorious.
His hundred at Old Trafford in 2005 doesn't seem quite so juicy-fluent but a six at 04:59 is just delicious.
Even in 2007 when he was near enough at the end of his ability, the first four boundaries of this video are effortless, timed shots. That straight drive is brilliant. Admittedly the bowling attack is shite.
I rate him quite highly as a batsman. I believe he was No. 1. in the world in 2002/03. His statistics I think represent a man who gave a lot of his attention to the captaincy, a bit like Strauss. Admittedly Strauss ended his career with 50 games as captain and 50 not, and similar averages of 40/41 for each - but lest we forget he came into the 2005 Ashes averaging over 50 and scored 2 centuries in that series. Vaughan only managed to average 36 as Captain, and captained for 51 of his 82 Tests. When he wasn't captain between 1999 and 2003 over 31 matches he averaged over fifty.
Have just noticed that Strauss, bizarrely, averaged way more away than at home - 44 away to 39 at home!

Just watched some highlights from his century against SA - 156 in the first test. Another series of fantastic cover drives.

Re: Michael Vaughan
The 2000s seems a bad time for England with some of their solid batsmen of the first half of the decade having their careers cut short. Vaughan by knee injury in 2006, Trescothick by stress in 2006, Hussein perhaps earlier than he could have done in 2004 albeit he recognised the talent fast approaching, Thorpe who could have played on I think though KP had emerged to steal the show.
Changing of the guard in 2004-2006.

Bell always looked amazing when he batted, which I guess made it more frustrating when he got out for f**k all runs for the first half of his career

Re: Michael Vaughan
Michael Vaughan was a dangerous batsman for the opposition.
Used to get big hundreds.
He and Tresco together (right / left combo) - they were very good for England.

He never done a thing in limited overs cricket and he's peak period was way too short, average of 40 in he's era is pretty bad for a number 3.

Re: Michael Vaughan
I dunno, considering he was an English number 3.
But he was a test specialist. Strauss and cook were/are too. Only trescothick was able at both - one of our best ODI players.
I reckon him and bell might open in an Greatest England ODI XI. Or maybe Nick knight.
Trescothick
Bell
Root (c)
Pietersen
Bairstow (wk)
Collingwood
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Gough
Anderson
I wanted to get Trott in there, I think he was a great ODI bat for England, but never mind.
Not too shite a team, eh?

Bell in an ODI side?
I'd pick Gooch anyday.
With the bats they have nowadays - and the fielding restrictions - Gooch would have a field day.

Would be good to find a place for Allan Lamb too.
Collingwood for 12th man, Lamb in the XI.

Re: Michael Vaughan
I suppose it depends what era the XI would play in. I can't see Gooch doing the dilscoop
Go back further than the 80s and your good one day players were good just because they were good test players and the skill set wasn't much different

Re: Michael Vaughan
England A team in India 1995 m Vaughn was a team member but he was dropped for 3rd test because he scored 1/1/5/15 in first 2 test , eng.A won that series with the bowling of Chappel and M.m.patel
India found Rahul Dravid from that series.

From memory he made something like 37 on debut but out of a team total of about 120-odd, against South Africa I think.

It's Geoff not jeoff
And I think off the top of my head Vaughan played 87 tests to Boycotts 108
But no Boycotts personal demons made him a poor captain

Re: Michael Vaughan
He did however captain England for four Tests through the start of 1978. His first was in Karachi in January - Gattings debut - drawing with Pakistan, knocks of 31 and 56 as the teams batted along at around 1.7 runs per over. The match was pretty overshadowed by a row over Packer players in the Pakistan line-up who were withdrawn from the match in the end. Boycs took to the media afterwards to slate the pitch and Pakistan's defensive attitude, which Wisden seemed to agree with.
He then made 77 from 302 balls top scoring against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve and then 1 as England were ripped apart for 64 by Richard Hadlee. He scored about 10 runs an hour, but he took a lot of stick and was hit around the eye, and constantly got grit stuck in his contact lenses apparently. Then at Christchurch England took a 174-run win though he made only 8 and 26. Rather erroneously-prophetical, Wisden wrote "It became Botham's match, and, no matter how long he plays for England, he will find it hard to equal his spectacular all-round performance." He made another 54 at Eden Park in another draw. overshadowed by twin hundreds by Geoff Howarth.
One loss one win and two draws.
