26th January 1993

West Indies win by 1 run

West Indies win by 1 run
On January 26, 1993, West Indies and Australia were involved in a cliffhanger in Adelaide and eventually, the Windies won the Test match by a solitary run.

The Caribbean outfit was bowled out out for a paltry 146 in the second innings on a wicket with variable bounce. In pursuit of a modest target of 186, Australian batsmen also struggled to come to grips with the track. Curtly Ambrose, who had just returned back to form, took the wickets of David Boon, Steve Waugh and Allan Border. On the other hand, Courtney Walsh sent a set Mark Waugh back to the pavilion.

However, Justin Langer played a gutsy knock and Tim May gave him valuable support as they took the score to 144 for 8, before Langer was dismissed. As the last man Craig McDermott took strike, the Windies looked set to win the match. However, May and McDermott showed great fighting spirit to take them ever closer to victory. In the end, with two runs to win, Walsh bowled a lifter and Darrell Hair judged that it had brushed McDermott's glove and upheld Walsh's appeal for a caught behind. McDermott, on his part, even now believes that he didn't edge the ball. West Indies' players celebrated the win long and hard.
