Troubled Tours

Postby raja » Fri Mar 23, 2018 6:20 am

Topical, considering Australia in South Africa.

Other tours that come to mind:
England in Australia 1932-33 (Bodyline)
England in West Indies 1953-54
England in Australia 1958-59
West Indies in India 1966-67
England in West Indies 1967-68
New Zealand in Pakistan 1969-70
England in Australia 1970-71
England in West Indies 1973-74 (though it might have only been that isolated Greig-Kallicharan incident)
England in India 1976-77 (John Lever vaseline incident)
England in Pakistan 1978 (Shakoor Rana - Mike Gatting)
West Indies in Australia 1975-76 (sort of)
India in West Indies (March-April 76) - that Jamaica Test
West Indies in New Zealand 1980-81 (Colin Croft)
India in Pakistan 1978 (they were playing a match after 17 years, this was touted as a Friendship Tour, was anything but)
Pakistan in England 2006 (fixing - Salman Butt & co)
India in South Africa 2001 (Mike Denness issue)
India in Australia 2008 (monkeygate)

Am not including Australia in South Africa 1969-70 (that was more a problem that Aussie players had with their Board).
Also, I think we can ignore the jellybeans issue involving Zaheer Khan. Not a big deal.
India's tour of England in 1974 had its own problems (as for Sudhir Naik, accused of stealing socks at a supermarket, and for Bedi, who got into trouble at the High Commissioner's). But not including this in this list - the problems have to involve the other team.

Please add more.
There are plenty more - I've just listed a few, top of head.

India in Australia 1981, when Gavaskar walked off in a huff when given out lbw to Lillee, doesn't figure in my list, cos it was just a one-off thing. Didn't become a big deal.
This is more about a tour being remembered for its bad incidents, involving both sides.

I understood the Aussies had some problems with the extreme biased umpiring in South Africa in 1970.

Pakistan in Australia in 1981-82. It was pretty uneventful but for some issues in Perth between Lillee and Miandad, which may have been started by Miandad running his mouth, but Lillee lost his shit and they almost came to blows. I vaguely recall some aggressive bowling at Lillee in the first innings which Lillee and Alderman responded by skittling Pakistan for 62. (I'm not condoning Lillee's hot headed behavior but he was provoked and he was rightly suspended)

They were my recollections, here is more detail

trouble=loss? or controversy ?

if it’s just a loss, 90% of test cricket tours favor home teams as test cricket is rigged to favor local teams.

Troubled means causing controversy and bad feeling between the two sides.
Result of the series is irrelevant.

in Boon's case it didn't affect performance.
