Tall Batsmen XI

Postby raja » Tue Mar 20, 2018 8:38 am

On Katto's request, opening this thread for a Tall Cricketers Xi

Cut-off height 185 cm (so that's about 6'1").

First let's just make a list - then we can shortlist.

Kevin Pietersen (193)
Warwick Armstrong (191)
Clive Lloyd (194?)
Chris Gayle (188)
Tony Greig (6'6" - 198?)
Wes Hall (196)
Curtly Ambrose (201)
Bob Willis (6'6" - 198?)
Bruce Reid (203)
Phil Edmonds (188)
Inzamam

I'll leave this here. Plenty of quicks, as one would expect.

batsmen I was thinking more exclusively, because its harder to be a good tall batsmen because you're further away from the pitch

good tall bowlers are a dime a dozen, no challenge

Already looking decent.

Hayden (lhb)
Gayle (lhb)
Graeme Pollock (lhb)
Inzamam (rhb)
Clive Lloyd (lhb)
Warwick Armstrong (rhb)
Tony Greig (rhb)
Yuvraj Singh (lhb)
Keith Miller (rhb)
----

So the right-handed tall guys became allrounders, but the pure, tall, batsmen are lefthanders.
So can we say that if you are tall and want to succeed in cricket, but don't have bowling ability, you better be a lefty?

Can we can make a Tall Players XI from BCCI itself?
Could be a bit of a challenge, for the batting.

The tallest cricketers of the ongoing World Cup

It is one of cricket's greatest paradoxes that some of its shortest cricketers have been - speaking metaphorically - its tallest legends. Sachin Tendulkar stands at 5'5'', while Sunil Gavaskar is just an inch taller.

Full Coverage: ICC World Cup 2015

One of the world's greatest spin practitioners, Muttiah Muralidharan is 5'7" while the great Don Bradman was 5'8". So, does that mean height doesn't matter in cricket? Not at all. Think Joel Garner, Ian Botham, Tony Greig - all of them great in their own right and height.

And then you have towering Pakistani pacer Mohammed Irfan at 7'1", the tallest player ever. While he's still some miles away from greatness, here's looking at some of the tallest cricketers in this World Cup.

Pakistan's Mohammed Irfan 7'1"

Mohammed Irfan at 7'1", is the tallest ever international cricketer. Because of his height, he releases the ball from an awkward height making it quite difficult for the batsmen to adjust for short or pitched up deliveries. He is one of the key members of the Pakistani team for the 2015 World Cup.

South Africa's Morne Morkel 6'5"

This South African has troubled every batsman on the field and Allan Donald thinks highly of him. His height gives him a lot of bite off the pitch and he makes things even more dangerous by bowling extremely fast. Apart from his team, he's also been hot property in the IPL.

West Indies' Jason Holder 6'7"

He's just replaced Dwayne Bravo as the West Indies skipper. Holder has been a go-getter and has risen quickly through the ranks of the team. We'll watch him to see how far he can take his topsy-turvy contingent in this World Cup.

England's Steven Finn 6'7"

Englishman Finn's bouncers have given batsmen a tough time lately. And with his smooth action, he can keep going at them all day. After years of cricket, he had to correct his bowling action, since he would often dislodge the stumps with his knee at the point of delivery. The law was changed to classify such a ball as a no ball and this is popularly called Finn's Law. How cool!

England's Stuart Broad 6'4"

His baby face hides his talent. He's venomous with the new ball and he's been appointed England's T20 captain. The bowler has promised to bounce back after Team England's defeat against Australia last week. We're ready to believe him - of course, it helps that he scores highly in the looks department.

Some of the shortest cricketers to play the World Cup

Bangladesh's Mushfiqur Rahim 5'3''

This keeper is a powerhouse, with consistent scores. He's playing in this World Cup.

India's Parthiv Patel 5'3''

This cherub-faced keeper was selected for the 2003 Cup but did not play any matches.

India's Gundappa Viswanath 5'3''

The classy batsman played the 1975 and 1979 World Cups, though India fared poorly in both the editions.

Zimbabwe's Tatenda Taibu 5'5''

The diminutive Zimbabwean cricketer produced some great fireworks in the 2011 Cup.

West Indies' Alvin Kallicharran 5'5''

The classy batsman was part of the Windies' World Cup-winning sides of 1975 and 1979.

There are barely 11 top class batsmen over 185cm which shows its more difficult for tall guys to master this art.

There was one domestic Indian batsman (never played international cricket) called Sanjay Jagdale. He is now a cricket administrator. He is 2.01 m tall.

I remember Sanjay Jagdale.
Was a decent batsman, at least for domestic cricket.
