Gilchrist Or Astle ?

Postby Misty » Mon Mar 06, 2017 2:52 pm

Folks let me know following two test innings,I think both Freakish innings.

Gilchrist 102 off 59 ball in test
N.Astle 222 off 168 ball in test

Let me know whose innings more remarkable ?
Azheruddin hits 439 in his First 5 Test innings vs Attapatu, who scored ONE run in his first 6 test innings.

I suppose Astle was more of an anomaly because gilly was the more consistent and more talented player

Easily Astle.

You just have to look at the match situations.

I haven't checked the scorecards but if I remember right, England already had their backs to the wall when Gilly walked in. He then turned the screws then tighter, hammering them to all corners of the ground.

Astle, on the other hand, was trying to pull off what would have been the most amazing Test victory of all time. And he came very close to pulling it off.

Anyday Astle's innings was more remarkable.

Astle easily, Gilchrists 100 has been matched at least twice by Viv Richards v Eng in 1986 & Misbah-ul-haq against Australia 2014. About the only innings i can think of to match Astles in a last day run chase would be Stan McCabes 189* out of 2/274 chasing 399 to win when with a storm closing in the fielding captain appealed against the light because he was worried about fielders getting injured by McCabe, he was hitting the ball that hard.
