1962 Pakistani team

Postby Boycs » Sun Nov 27, 2016 2:49 pm

I've just picked up an ornate cricket bat signed by the '62 Pakistani touring team, to England I assume.

It's signed by:

Javed Burki
Hanif Mohammad
Mushtaq Mohammad
Itikhab alam
Mohammad farooq
Shahid mahmood
Asif ahmad

And 12 others I can't quite make out yet.

The store had other signed bats, a 1960 South African side, 1952 New Zealand, and an early 1960s Indian side.

Also tonnes of county cricket sides from the 50s, 60s and 80s. I only spotted peter roebuck amongst the names I could make out. Most were Middlesex and Somerset

It couldn't have been an early 1960s Indian side, more likely the 1959 Indian side that lost all 5 Tests.
The series where Abbas Ali Baig made his Test debut and got a hundred on debut.

After that tour, India played its next Test series in England only in 1967.
Unless of course there was an unofficial tour of some sort but I doubt it.

But England did tour India in 1961-62 (a series where Barrington and Vijay Manjrekar did very well). Maybe they got this memorabilia from that tour but I doubt it. More likely to be 1959. If you have the names of a few players, we can date it better.

Here´s an interesting interview with Javed Burki, Pakistan captain on that tour.
Cousin of Imran and Majid Khan, themselves cousins.

I couldn't remember the year but I know that none of the spin quartet were on it so it can't be 1967, must have been 1959

I know I didn't recognise any of the names on the Indian or New Zealand bats, of the ones o could read. But I don't really know anything of cricket between the end of WWII and the late 60s unless it's England or Australia or a bit of Pakistan (thanks to that wounded tigers book)
