Steve Smith Out Of IPL.2016 with Injury

Battered and bruised, the already depleted Rising Pune Supergiants team will have to do without the services of another key overseas player as Steven Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 with a wrist injury. Smith is now Rising Pune Supergiants's fourth overseas player, after Kevin Pietersen, Faf du Plessis and Mitchell Marsh, whose campaign in the T20 tournament has been cut short.

According to Alex Kountouris, the Cricket Australia Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager, Smith's injury doesn't appear to be of a serious nature, but he has been asked to return in order to recover and regain full fitness ahead of Australia's tour to West Indies towards the end of May.

"Steve has been struggling with pain in his right wrist for the last week during his stint in the IPL. We have been working with his IPL franchise Pune to monitor this and unfortunately it has not resolved. As such, he will return home from India for further assessment and treatment," Kountouris said in a statement released by Cricket Australia on Monday (May 2). "From the information we have so far, this doesn't appear to be a serious injury but we are keen to give him the time to recover and rehabilitate before heading to the West Indies at the end of May."

Pietersen was the first to be ruled out of action after suffering a calf injury during RPS's home game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Du Plessis suffered a fractured finger which ended his IPL campaign while Marsh picked up a side strain that forced him out of the tournament. Usman Khawaja is set to join the team as Pietersen's replacement but more replacements would now be needed as Smith's untimely exit comes as a big blow for the Supergiants. RPS will have their hands full in the next few days to figure out the reinforcements.

Smith had been in good touch in recent games and had even scored his maiden T20 ton recently against Gujarat Lions. His absence will leave a big hole in the Supergiants batting department. The MS Dhoni-led side's struggle to string together a winning combination continued with an eight-wicket defeat to the Mumbai Indians. Smith scored a quick-fire 45 in this game on Sunday, which turned out to be his final IPL 2016 outing.

With six losses out of eight games, RPS are languishing at the bottom half of the table, and have six games remaining to attempt to turn their fortunes around. But the ever-growing list of injured players has added to their woes, and with their next match - against Delhi Daredevils at Feroz Shah Kotla - scheduled for May 5, they have a short turnaround time to address a host of issues, including finding the replacements.

I'd have been worried about this for RPS but as long as they have batsmen like Trahane at the top of the innings, they have nothing to worry about. :-)

I feel sorry for Pune fans. To lose their three top batsmen bar Rahane, all imports, that they were to build the team around is very unlucky.

Hashim Amla getting a call up?

I suspect he's had this injury for some time, and its just gotten worse.
His form has been down.

He just smashed a 100 and a 40 odd off 20 odd balls with both innings getting close to 200SR.

His form just came right as far as I call it.

As per contract each player need to play x number of games to get paid in full.
May be, these players who had met the requirements wanted to be out of IPL, BCCI & teams take it on chin as unwritten rule but for fans say that they are injured. It's nothing new to declare a player injured when they got dumped as a well known fact. Just thinking outside the box.

Really?
I honestly think quality of cricket in IPL much better than T20 internationals.

not many T20 internationals are played so countries dont know their best squads

I'd doubt it'd be better quality than ODIs though

Then how can you say T20 internationals are better with such small sample?

In IPL you can see enough matches to decide if a player XYZ Is good or not for T20 with enough ammo to back it up.

I say for T20s IPL gives best barometer to gauge a player talent when compared with once a year chance to play single T20 international match.
