Sydney Barnes playing T20

Postby Daanav » Wed May 22, 2019 6:22 pm

I often wonder how England's Sydney Francis Barnes, often considered as the greatest bowler of all time, would have fared in T20 games like IPL. All evidence suggests that he would have performed very well.

Barnes was nominally a pace bowler - usually fast medium - but he had all sorts of variations including slower balls, yorkers, in and out swingers and genuine spinners even with a new ball. He was extremely difficult to get away as evidenced by his career figures. He played only 27 Test matches but took 189 wickets at 16.43 apiece and 719 First Class wickets at 17.09, and those mostly with attacking fields. With restrictive T20 fielding he might have been almost impossible to hit out of the ground.

The flipside is that he probably would have had problems with authority due to his abrasive personality. He was tall and menacing, and it was said that even his teammates were intimidated by him.

raja picked him couple of years ago in Draft game here.I can ask you question here>> Do you think his Average that good if he plays in Asia? under daily dry weather?

Those Era they keep playing under Moderate rain produced match Figures of 15 for 87 oftenly.

I noticed less rules on those days on taking new ball after 90 overs. Batsman pile up 2000 runs during seasons while keep playing with old ball up to 135 overs or more.Ind/eng test produced 588 @ day in england no way its possible in 90 overs only.Indian opener mustaq Ali and vijay Merchant scored 190* after tea in 3 day test.Day one they play> next day take rest day > day # 2 retured and scored 588

Vijay Merchant twice scored 2000 runs (4000+) on tour of england in those Era.(including Vs county plus tests tour)

At a guess he would have been successful in the subcontinent. One of Barnes' great strengths was the ability to adjust his bowling to suit the local conditions.

Barnes missed quite a few official tests and unofficial games due to his confrontations with authority. He was a very difficult man to get on with. He once refused to play because they told him there was no asparagus soup during dinner the night before a game. Also, if the captain did not give him the ball when Barnes wanted to bowl, he would sometimes refuse to bowl in that innings.

He'd have been a super success, what with his variations and all.
Mumbai Indians would have picked him up in a jiffy. :-)
As for his run-ins with authority, can you imagine anyone having a run-in with Nita Ambani?
He'd have been pampered, unlike in the era he played - and, in return, would have delivered in match after match.

Bumrah-Barnes for MI.

Just the thought makes me shudder.

That scenario is possible, I guess.

Umm, tough. Perhaps Attila the Hun, Adolf Hitler and Hannibal Lecter might have just managed if they had teamed-up but it would have been a struggle.
