1st Test: Sri Lanka v South Africa at Galle, July 16-20

Postby SuperGLS » Tue Jul 15, 2014 1:45 pm

This two test series should prove to be a good one I think. SL coming off a high in England and South Africa having not played for a bit.

It'll be on mostly while I'm sleeping so it'll be up to the other side of the world CFers to follow.

Nobody cares about this test?

Dean Elgar scored a ton!

AB cleaned up an over before stumps and Steyn comes in as nightwatchman. 266 for 5.

Mahela and Sanga have exactly the same number of Test runs right now - 11493.
Sanga, of course, has a much better average.

Mahela's average is now 50.18. If he doesn't ruin it for himself in these last few Tests, he could end up with a 50 average.

That, over 150 Tests, is very creditable, even if many of those runs came on home grounds.

This pitch looks road-like, so my prediction is that Mahela will score something comically large.

455 for 9d. Sri Lanka off to a safe start though, 30 for no loss.

Vaguely watching this at work. Tharanga just got a huge life, Philander flicked but didn't dislodge the off bail.

Mathews hit Morkel for 5 fours in 1 over:

78.6
Morkel to Mathews, FOUR, this is even better! He has murdered Morkel in this spell, 20 off the over. This was overpitched and unfurls a violent strike through extra cover
78.5
Morkel to Mathews, FOUR, shoveled through extra cover. Mathews has fifty in four magnificent strokes! This was full around the stumps, Mathews stays beside it, opens the face and muscles it into the gap
Hashim slows the game down, tries to get his field right.
Daniel Alexande: "Mathews switch the stealth mode when he sees the tail, this could be fun "
78.4
Morkel to Mathews, FOUR, goes short and Mathews was hoping for that, swivels on his back leg and pulls it to the fine leg boundary. Galle gets the horns and yells out
78.3
Morkel to Mathews, no run, good length on middle, Mathews shuffles across and nudges it away through square leg
78.2
Morkel to Mathews, FOUR, backs away as he preempts the short ball, pummeled through extra cover. Mathews has been phenomenal with the tail this year
78.1
Morkel to Mathews, FOUR, hammered down the ground. Morkel has been trying to bowl full to see if he can reverse it, but that only sets up Mathews who swings from a firm base. Not perfectly timed, but still hit powerfully enough to beat mid-on's dive

Sri Lanka 259/7 (89.0 ov)

Follow on avoided.

Mathew has become the backbone of SL cricket. Taking over from the legends. Batting on 82 and test average close to 50.

Day3 session 3. Hmm if Lankans bat till end of day today, day4 saffers bat all day and leave 400 target for Lankans for 5th day, can they survive? Match favors saffers unless they close shop today.

172 runs behind with just one wicket in hand. Seems promising for South Africa. All they need to do is add 230 like GS says and should be enough.

Its because his concentrating more on his batting these days, same happened with Steve Smith when he was pushing to be a all-rounder with those pies he calls leg breaks, could hardly score a run during that period.

Lead of 250, 7 wickets in hand.
Still not safe for SA.
Need to set SL 350 at least.

Game very interestingly poised.
SL are 59/1 with Silva and Sanga at the crease.

Still 311 to get, so long way to go.

But SL have proven to be fighters in the recent past - and this is home turf for them.
Will Steyn, Morkel and co spoil the home party?

Whether SL finish this game in the last session tomorrow or a session earlier depends on how much Tahir gets to bowl.
He can really toss up pies.

I thought SA declared too early, thought they should've got at least a lead of 400, maybe even 430. It wouldn't have taken too much time off the clock, considering they were obv happy to declare with lead of 370, and they could have just swung for the fences and it not mattered too much if they didn't add many runs. Odd decision imo.

The day Smith refused to press charges against broad standing on the ball, we knew Saffers temper balls on regular basis.

See no tempering no wickets, lanka to win

Amla wins his first game as Captain. Steyn and Morkel among wickets. 4 each in second inning. Steyn with 9 wicket in the match and now is the bowler with most wicket in subcontinent by non asian.

He doesn't need to get wickets. That's the scary part. The South African bowling attack is the best in the world right now.

Well done South Africa. Mahela looks like he's already retired.

Its easy to be in Clarke's mode when you have a great bowling attack. Cook is not a good captain. Dhoni, not sure what more he can do. Draw is win for him.

Sure, but Clarke has been making aggressive declarations for a couple years now without great bowling attacks. You just need, ahem, untampered balls like Clarke. It appears Amla might if he can keep an arms length away from Big Vern.

Clarke had 10 times better bowling attack 2 years ago, than India does today.

Now Playing:

If I hold a gun to your head for entire next year
