Oh Jimmy, smacks Vijay down the ground for 4 and the scores are level.

What did I say yesterday? England still had a chance to win.

ok James, I see where you're coming from, but this is clearly insane what is taking place here

Highest 10th wicket partnership. Well done boys.

Hah. Yes. When you look at the shots he's been playing though you can see that he is capable. He's always been decent at defending (nightwatchman duty and all that.)

485/9 at lunch, after a 30 min extension because of 9 wickets being down.
Was good fun to watch.
The only bowler who looks likely to get Anderson out is Ishant.

The only way Jadeja will get a wicket here is if the batsman does something stupid.

About the career of Sachin Tendulkar.

Just playing to Indians' worshipping mentality. Sick of it.

18 runs till he overtakes Agar for highest score by a number 11. 19 runs till he scores a century and Katto has an aneurysm. I'm kind of hoping Cook declares with Jimmy on 99 because Warne sent him a text at lunch telling him to be more aggressive.

Wow !!! Anderson century. Not the most surprising. Indian bowling is horrible, McCullum got 300 the previous test and now this. Still India will be irritated but happy. India still doing better than expected. Could have been 500/2.

McCullum can play
Gillespie did it in a B international against Bangladesh. all records against them are ignored

200 is a 200. Bangladesh has a better bowling attack than India, especially in Bangladesh, where their left arm spinners are deadly.

I quite enjoyed the Root-Anderson partnership.

Had this been an Ashes Test, I'd be heartbroken.

If England had done this against any other team, I'd feel bad but somehow against BCCI, it doesn't feel all that bad. It was almost expected anyway.

Surely people didn't seriously expect 202/7 to be anything under 400 all out?

Leap. Ishant is well Ishant he wont fell a thing. He just wet there to look at the queen. But jiddu is egg faced swami is deflated binny helped along. Dhoni could not think given he had no options. If I were Dhoni I would have bowled myself and let the bowlers off on a beach trip.

Ya india over achieved. Now its important as Broad said to dig in. Hopefully india can resist the temptation to be bowled out for 210 and offer England an opportunity to chase 180 in 60 overs tomorrow.

A good team, which india is not, would want to be 380 for 5 at end of this game. Despite the root Anderson fiasco, England need to bowled at least 50 % more than India. Right now they have 30 more overs 20% with 120 to go. India should target to bat at least another 90 over ie till tea tomorrow

What surprised me earlier today was that when they were discussing the highest 10th wicket partnership in first-class cricket - 307 - neither Atherton nor Botham knew about it. Not only that, when the figure was mentioned, Botham said "probably made in the subcontinent".

some strange last days lately so i wouldnt call it too early

one thing that infuriates me about this ground is that newish stand with the odd pitched roof... which seems completely pointless as it provides barely any cover

Match delicately poised, with England in with a winning chance.
All this talk about a batting wicket is deceptive.

If a wicket falls early tomorrow, it will bring Dhoni to the crease. And for me, in a Test match, Dhoni is part of the tail.

BCCI will have to bat responsibly. Important though not to get too defensive - not one of these players (Kohli, Rahane, Dhoni, Jadeja, Binny) is defensive by nature. They all like to play shots - and nothing wrong with that, as long as they choose balls on merit.

Should be a fun day. Hope the weather doesn't ruin it.

I will still rate Shami / Bhuvi partnership > Root / Anderson's ...

Reasons
1. Bowling standard
2. Both BCCI'ns are bowlers and at least one here is a recognized batsman.

In all likelihood india will be bowled out for further 100 runs. That leaves England 220 to win, enough time Cook to get back to form with a match winning 100. England to win by 6 wickets

And lo and behold it was from the 1920s in Australia. After being 113 for 9. Maybe Cook was captain that fielding side too?

I don't think anything can happen till Dhoni is at the helm of Indian team. The bowling attack is utterly toothless. But the ATTITUDE is just not there.

We had guys like Kumble, Bhajji, Dravid, Laxman, who were eager to win abroad, do well in test matches. Sure, Kumble, Bhajji were limited in their skills outside India, but at least they wanted it badly. I just dont get that eagerness from the likes of Jadeja, Ashwin, Dhoni.

We have to change leadership. The same Dhoni who lashed out like never before after losing IPL final, has not shown even 1% of that passion after letting a test match go out of hands.

Exactly. Surely, if the batting were that easy, both sides would have been pootling along at six an over. Instead, neither has managed much more than half that.

If a wicket falls early tomorrow, it will bring Dhoni to the crease. And for me, in a Test match, Dhoni is part of the tail.

That's part of why I reckon it'll be a draw. The forecast says there's almost certain to be a delay at some stage and, even if there isn't, there aren't going to be enough hours in the day to remove the Indians and score enough runs.

The problem India has is power. The team know that whatever results they provide, the BCCI will continue to cast the biggest shadow across world cricket. The players know that they are already, and will remain, cricketing icons and sporting superheroes when they return home. They know that they've got a secure spot in the IPL (and will, therefore, be made for life) for as long as they know which end of a bat to hold. Where's the motivation?

Teams like England and Australia know that, if they don't perform, they will be villified and pilloried by their own fans and media.

Teams like NZ and WI know that, if they don't perform, they'll be ignored. Why should the Indians exert themselves when, frankly, they've got very little to gain that isn't already theirs?

Ofcourse this game will be a draw - its had draw written all over it since day 1.

The only pitch where you will get a result is the Oval.

1st Test: England v India at Nottingham, July 9-13 2014

Postby Going South » Sat Jul 12, 2014 11:53 pm

Oh come on. BCCI players do care. Silly as it sounds test cricket team selections are based on IPL performance and vise versa. All players get icon status only test cricket team membership alone. If you are not part of test team you are not on A,B,C contracts. The higher your spot on contract the higher selling rate you get on IPL auction. So you do need to care if you were to be retained on your IPL contract. Many good BCCI fell through the cracks missed big bucks when they failed on test cricket. So, you do play with level head.

It's OK, BCCI fans. Even if Sir Jadeja and company play as rubbish as they did on Thursday, England have proved that they have no answer to the mighty Mohammed Shami. He'll save the day.

Dhoni does seem to have less intensity in Test matches.
It is almost as if it is a necessary evil in his career that he is burdened with.

With the heavy schedule of this Test series - and BCCI surprisingly planning several Test matches in the coming years - I foresee an early "Test" retirement for Dhoni.

Chance for guys like Saha to get into the side.

Am not saying that Dhoni does not want to do well in Tests.
That would be a ridiculous statement to make.
He is professional enough to always try to do his best and win.

But that spark, that spring in his step, that you see when he's captaining the side in ODIs or T20s, is not easily evident in Tests.
Maybe it's just the work of a wicketkeeper in Tests that is so much tougher than in ODIs/T20s.

Maybe it takes its toll of him.

Wicketkeeping - in Test cricket - is one hell of a job. Not quite rated enough.

This piece comes down rather harshly on Dhoni's captaincy.
Super will like it. :-)

I think Dhoni ticks a lot of boxes, maybe not all but I struggle to remember many great Indian tactical captains
usually its not required as talent and experience in home conditions compensates more than enough

George Dobell suggests bringing back Simon Kerrigan for Lord's. Don't think I'd back him against Dhawan or Dhoni in a bad mood. Hell, I wouldn't even back him against Bhuvi in a bad mood.

IMO if Lord's is also a road they should "rest" one of the seamers and bring back Monty. Since that isn't going to happen, I've been hearing good things about young Adam Riley. As long as they don't bring back Kerrigan (or Borthwick, who hasn't bowled ten overs this whole season) I'm happy enough.

well he doesnt necessarily have to bowl to those two players in a bad mood
England needs someone to break partnerships and get through overs when the seamers arent doing it

his stage fright mightn't be so bad the second time. perhaps deserves another chance

Speaking of broken partnerships, Kohli the shining overseas hope has just played all around a straight one. England could still theoretically win this one.
