3rd Test: West Indies v New Zealand at Bridgetown June 26-30

Postby SuperGLS » Tue Jun 24, 2014 12:54 am

A couple days away yet.

Has the makings of a nice finish if one team can play like they are capable.

Stupid predictions: You guys know the drill. Put up some unbelievable predictions and get rewarded with CF$ from yours truly.

Here's mine: Ramdin with a 125+ run captain's knock and a pair for McCullum.

Prediction: Benn will get into a shouting match with at least one Kiwi on day three.

Postby SuperGLS » Wed Jun 25, 2014 1:39 am

Test cricket, outside the Ashes, has been pretty competitive over the last 18 months. This series shaping up for a good finish.

Come on kids, get your predictions in before start of play!

One day I want to watch a test in Barbados. Probably when Australia is in town.

Looks like Ish Sodhi misses out for Wagner. More pace.

293 all out. Good day from Benny and Roach!

And Gayle and Brathwaite made it to stumps. Gayle looks to be playing like his last innings. Good news for all cricket fans.

Isn't that just wonderful? A proud moment if you are an India or believe in equality. I can remember it like just yesterday, how Walcott refused to turn over the presidency to Jaggu Dalmiya just because he was an Indian, and ECB (then TCBEW) and CA (then ACB) supported this stand. Now Srini is the Chairman, and India are about to play England in a 5 game Test series, how things change with a few bucks?

You got to love this money, makes the English and Aussies dance like nothing else. Kudos to BCCI for figuring them out.

Day 4 here we go.

100 run lead and 7 wickets in hand. Should be able to post a chase of 300. Right?

I hope they get bowled out for less than 200 and West Indies wrap it up today.

KW past 150 and lead near 300. Taylor doesn't look threatening at all. Keeps dropping it short and too easy to leave.

Craig still to come with the bat.

Just had a look at KW's Test statistics.

Expected him to be close to a 50 avg but he's barely scraping 40 (that too, incl this 153*).

Have hardly known him to fail for any extended period of time.

What's impressive about him to me is that most of his hundreds have come outside NZ. In fact 10 of his highest 14 scores (all 60 runs or more) are outside of NZ.

Maybe he feels a bit too much pressure at home?

He has problems settling in and against the moving new ball. Basically means that his failure scores are 5 instead of 25 which drags his average down. Kind of like Steve Smith I suppose. I remember looking at this previously, I'd post up some stats but cricinfo won't let me look at them on my phone without installing their bloatware app.

I wouldn't give him plaudits for scoring hundreds away from home, rather I'd point out that he's scored pretty much all of them in subcontinental conditions (yes, WI is subcontinental these days. Kingston is playing like Nagpur) and that this is a consequence of him nicking off with monotonous regularity when the pitch is doing something. Again I can't look at stats but I'm pretty sure he didn't do too much interesting in England last year or in the India/WI home tours in late 2013.

They got in a bit of play last night that I didn't realize until now. Lead of 307. An extra half hour in the morning.

Does McCullum have the guys bat on for a while or declare now?

I would bat for an hour. Letting Gayle have a crack at a gettable total on a pitch that is slow but otherwise not doing a whole lot doesn't seem smart.

Wi doing well 72 needed in 18 overs with a wicket in hand. Taylor has a Test century, against NZ no less and Shillingford is proud owner of the fastest 50.

Damn that was a close one. Was following at work. I knew as soon as Holder went it was pretty much over.

Comment on Cricinfo said Blackwood should have stayed in the XI instead of bringing back in Shilly. Agree 100%. Shilly did almost nothing in this test and Blackwood played well in his debut. Would have helped having another dedicated bat.

Well done McCullum and NZ.

Apparently Vaughan tweeted something today about "If anyone is watching, this is how you captain in test cricket." Hah!

Although I don't dislike the Windies, I am very happy for New Zealand.
They need more of these series wins, not just the odd Test here or there.

Good to see Neesham and Craig start well in their careers. Hope they don't fall away like many before them have.
And KW continues to impress in batting conditions favourable to him.

From a Windies perspective, being beaten at home - that too by the rather lowly-placed Kiwis - must hurt.
Is good to see Holder have a good debut, and guys like Brathwaite and Edwards put their hands up.
But the bigger names like Gayle and Bravo need to do more.
Though Chanders failed here, I won't blame him - he's earned my respect over 15+ years as a rock in the Windies line-up.
One poor Test doesn't change that.

McCollum is a very good captain. Brave and innovative. Not easy attributes to have for a Kiwi captain. Southee was mediocre before, he is a phenomenon under him.

Super I thought nasa would find intelligent alien life in another planet. I did not expect intelligent life from another planet is right here so close to DC!!! Now since when did a red blooded American a. Become a cricket fan. B. Give sly love messages to katto a species from Southern part of our planet. And c. More importantly and bafflingly WHY!!!!

I wonder if that hurricane off florida coast developing now is as a result of this grand perceived sin.

Awesome series victory. Well done Black Caps. That was some declaration by BMac but being aggressive comes pretty naturally to him, sometimes to his downfall but not this time.

Southee has been pretty awesome in the last 2-3 years and I think he did pretty well under Taylor too so don't think McCullum should get the credit. I remember his average was over 35 in his first few years (and over a number of matches too!), so bringing it under 30 from that just shows how good he's become. Him and Boult are forming a pretty good new ball partnership atm. Long may it continue!
