England can't lose this match now. 500 runs at over 4 an over. Maybe this is a new England approach.

As for a declaration, nah. Just bat out and see if you don't have to bat again.

Ya score as many as possible, bat till end of day, if possible, 3 days enough to get the Lankans twice. Declaration is waste of opportunity.

Cook is a rare case, without looking into any stats his good form doesn't last too long and his bad form doesn't last too long either. I don't think I have seen a batsman like him whose in great form one series and poor in the next and it all changes in the series after that.

Someone with an overly fluidic technique that is forever needing tinkering? Or just someone who plays too much inside his own head, do you think?

England need every confidence boost they can get after their disastrous tour Down Under.

This double hundred will do quite nicely. :-)

Huge achievement, class player.

I remember hearing the news on TV in the early 90s when Border got past Gavaskar in NZ to become the highest run scorer in the history of the game.

140 for 1 at stumps. England lost all the initiative. As Bumble said in the last few overs "the pitch is winning."

Never know, a couple quick ones in the morning could put so,e life back into this test.

the pitch is the winner at the moment. But Sanga is a class act, even with his troubles touring England in the past he is currently in the prime of his playing career.

Too be fair if you look deep into his stats there are some massive holes and some major factors why his average is soo high, he has almost 2000 Test runs v Bangladesh at 95 that's a massive stat booster.

v Australia averages 43

v England averages 35

& part from Pakistan I don't think theres a team that play on roads more often then Sri Lanka.

If Sri Lanka was as roady as we think, wouldn't more batsmen have super high averages there? The only non-Asian batsmen with an average over 45 in Sri Lanka are Ponting and Thorpe. Only 2 more with an average over 40: Gayle and Cullinan. My point here is that people always score more on the wickets they've grown up playing on. And also that Ponting is a great.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting

On to this match. At 207 for 2, perhaps England is still bad and only the pitch made them look this good?

True, it's a myth that SL pitches are flat, yes, there are times when batsmen score big runs but thats happens every where. There is always help for spinners and fast bowlers on SL pitches.

The kind of record Sanga has most great players have that kind of record. For me Sanga is as good as SRT.

I haven't been following this one all that closely, but looking at who's currently in, I'll have to watch the first half hour so I can see one of my favourite batsmen of all time throw the bat around for a bit.

Oh, and Sanga can score some more runs too if he likes.

Herath is amazing. Best batsman ever. His closed-eye golf swings from that fat shopkeeper body are a carbon copy of my dad in park cricket.

I don't really like watching Mathews bat - he's more punch than style - but he's pretty consistent and he's in good form at the moment.

Surprising they are using Plunkett as the "enforcer" when clearly Broad is the quicker of the two and easily the fastest Eng bowler in the squad.

The speed gun says Plunkett was faster on the day and hit 90 a couple of times. Makes sense since Broad is recovering from that foot problem and probably wouldn't want to go all out.

I see Anderson is looking pedestrian when the ball isn't swinging. Again. I hope Wasim never calls me the best at anything, it's obviously a death sentence from then on.

Normally Jarrod Kimber spouts crap that has no relation to coherent English, but today's article was pretty good: http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/752527.html

Not been following it - but surely Jordan is faster than Plunkett and Broad?

Question though (another one) - would it be within the spirit of the game to deny Mathews his century? I say you have to let him have it if you are playing to the spirit.
