There are a lot of great yesteryear players out there, who didn't get to play 50 Tests.

Yes you told me not to speak their name, so I keep it with myself.I wonder why most played only under 50 and 40 tests, modern day player need to play 60/65 test to equal their some milestones.

Fewer Tests per year I imagine.

1) There were fewer Test-playing nations
2) Travel took a lot of time - till flights became a regular thing, they used to travel by ship!!!
3) Wars
4) Game not so commercial as today, so not every playing day was sought to be monetised
5) BCCI didn't have so much power, so its ability to damage the game was limited

Had a feeling Laker was the spinner you were talking about earlier, saying no-one had picked him yet. Almost tempted me into going for him :)

Well, Grimmett was too obvious a choice not to be picked in the first 20 picked players.

Andy Roberts, on the other hand, came as a bit of a surprise for me. Not that he's not a great - but he was the second player to be picked.

He bowled in 86 innings, so all but 6 of total innings played.

You can go inbetween SG/boycaught and me.

Only one pick at a time, you can make your first round pick at the end of the game. I think that's the rules we used in the previous drafts.

Although if people can think of a better way let me know.

I think I will just skip this one. :)

AK takes Barry Richards and Shoaib Akther.

(I was joking about being precious about my selection and I am very glad to have you in this draft - its not the same without you slamming all my picks).

Shoab as a bowler in a test match????
ROFL.
TO DO WHAT ???
Bowling ? I don't think so.
He just bowls 5 overs and rest on the sidelines for the rest of the game.

Holds the record for the most runs (123) in a morning session and made keeping look easy.

Les Ames.

Farokh Engineer as my keeper

46 Tests, 2,611 runs at 31.08; 2 hundreds and 16 fifties. 66 catches and 16 stumpings. Putting him at 7 in the order though in reality he played over half his matches as an opener and scored both his hundreds opening. But I'll have far better openers than him in my line up (hopefully).

I think with the 50 cap limit, the more specialist wicket keepers are the ones who are going to be picked. The more skilled wicket keeper batsmen emerged later when more Tests were played per year, and with their batting ability they were picked for more than 50 games - the likes of Marsh, Gilchrist, Boucher and Knott.

A flamboyant batsman and an agile wicketkeeper, Farokh Engineer was one of the best of his trade, as shown by his selection as the first-choice keeper for the Rest of the World XI series in England and Australia in the early 1970s. Engineer was solidly built, yet had remarkably sharp reflexes - an essential requirement for keeping to the legendary spin quartet of Bedi, Prasanna, Chandrasekhar and Venkataraghavan. His finest moment as a batsman came against West Indies at Madras in 1966-67 when he plundered 94 before lunch on the first day - against Hall, Griffith, Sobers and Gibbs

2. Glenn Turner

No real surprises. At the most, a pick slightly early maybe - but no shockers.
But then it's still early days. :-)

HEDLEY VERITY

He played in 40 Test matches, taking 144 wickets at 24.37 runs each. He took 100 wickets in Test cricket in a shorter period than any other English bowler.

He is the only cricketer who has taken 14 wickets in a day in a Test match, this feat being performed against Australia at Lord's in the second Test, 1934.

Verity's mean pace was what is called slow-medium; on fast pitches, often about medium; and he would send down an inswinging yorker of an abrupt virulence.

Naturally, on wet or crumbled or sticky pitches, he reduced pace and tossed the leg-spinner higher, but even here his variety of pace and of angle of delivery was remarkable. He was a born schemer; tireless, but never wild, in experiment; as sensitive in observation as a good host, or as an instrumentalist who spots a rival on the beat; the scholar who does not only dream, the inventor who can make it work.

Between 1933 and 1951 India only played 24 Tests total but Merchant only took part in the English series in which they played England only 14 times in that period. He missed tours of Windies and Australia due to poor health.

I myself don't look too much into his stats because India FC back then was shit.

Ashwin is nothing more then a subcontinent bully and John Snow is just a right arm shit.

Snow was a decent enough bowler - he, together with Boycott, won England an Ashes series (1970-71).
Definitely deserves to be in this draft - whether picked early or late.

But I agree about Ashwin.
Bowling average 54.71 in Australia and 33.66 in England!
Will most likely improve on this in the years to come, but as of now, yes, "subcontinental bully" is a fair description.

The best team will need to be able to win in India as well.

A reminder - scoring criteria, as mentioned in the discussion thread - each team will be rated on their ability to win tours against all the current test teams. (And then the two best teams face off).

Felt I needed a spinner and will go for Johnny Briggs

33 Tests 118 wickets at 17.75
9 5 wicket hauls and 4 10 wicket match hauls

Also a Test hundred and 815 runs at 18.11

 I know nobody's going to vote for my Dad's Army team, but that's not the reason I'm taking part in this draft anyway. For me, it's only for the fun of picking yesteryear players. Will leave modern players to you guys. :-)

Briggs is one of the finest slow bowlers the game has seen.
In fact England always had a procession of great slow left-arm bowlers till recently.
Will only mention Rhodes, Verity and Underwood (though Underwood was hardly slow - he was quick, whipping the ball past the batsman!).
There were many more.

Am glad to see Briggs picked in this draft.

That's one of the big advantages of our 50-test limit. :-)

Ha. Briggs with 118 wickets off 33 is praised but ashwin with a whopping 248 wickets off just 44 matches is bitched on??? :wtf: what's wrong with you haters???
By a long margin ashwin is THE best bowler for this draft that has PROVEN results. 248 wickets is joke to you hater!! Have some respect ! Don't be BLIND with prejudice & Hate !
