Pressure on Shakib-less Bangladesh to level series

February 10 2021

In the absence of Shakib, Bangladesh will be banking on Tamim to make an impact.

Both Bangladesh and West Indies aren't in contention to reach the World Test Championship final. Realistically, they never had a shot at it. That, however, doesn't mean they are part of the championship just to make up the numbers. Often, for teams trying to establish themselves, it's about trying to evolve as a unit and be in better shape before the next championship cycle kicks off.

Ahead of the World Test Championship, Jason Holder felt his side could finish as high as fourth or fifth. While it hasn't exactly panned out how Holder wanted, West Indies still have a chance to put on a display. Bangladesh, ahead of the series, would have hoped to break the duck and bag full 120 points. They were confident that even though Test captain Mominul Haque stressed his side isn't taking West Indies lightly, he had no hesitation in acknowledging that the hosts will start as favourites.

Quite dramatically, they have had a rude shock. West Indies pulled off the highest chase in Asia to stun the hosts by three wickets in Chattogram in the opening Test against all odds. But Bangladesh also have a proud record in Dhaka. In their last three Tests, they have two innings victories and a win by 215 runs. Needless to say, it's going to be a test of temperament for both sides. However, there will be more pressure on Bangladesh.

"I am tired of these one wins and then struggling for the next three or four games. We have to make sure we don't go backwards again," is how West Indies head coach Phil Simmons reacted after the massive win. He's not wrong. His side needs more consistency to get better. With the World Test Championship winding down, an away series win could well be the boost that West Indies need to find that consistency.

When: From Thursday, February 11, 2021, 9:30 AM local time, 09:00 AM IST

Where: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka

What to expect:Bangladesh will continue to bank on their spinners to turn things around. And hence, it isn't surprising that the track prepared will be providing plenty of assistance to the spinners. The onus is on West Indies batsmen to counter that once again.

Team news:

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan picked up a thigh strain in the first Test and has been ruled out of the series. On the eve of the game, Shadman Islam was also ruled out because of a hip injury. Bangladesh have already added Soumya Sarkar to their squad as cover.

Probable XI: Soumya Sarkar, Tamim Iqbal, Najmul Hasan Shanto, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahman, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das (wk), Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Abu Jayed.

West Indies: The visitors are unlikely to make any change to their line-up.

Probable XI: Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Sheyne Moseley, Nkrumah Bonner, Kyle Mayers, Jermaine Blackwood, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican, Shannon Gabriel.

What they said:

"I think we need to understand that we are not playing longer version cricket for nearly 12 months and certainly there is a huge difference between white ball and red-ball cricket" - Bangladesh chief selector Minhajul Abedin.

"Every time you win, it is more important you look at ways to improve. When a team loses, they will try to improve, so we as winners have to do the same" - Phil Simmons.
