Not yet on Sky spots?

No deal with Sky Sports yet; BT Sport, Channel 4 in frame to broadcast India series

January 23 2021 by Vijay Tagore

Sky Sports has covered every winter for England, bar one, since 1989

Sky Sports might not be broadcasting the forthcoming India-England series on television in the UK. Star Sports, which has the global rights of India cricket, is negotiating with Channel 4 and BT Sport for TV rights while keeping the communication channel open with Sky. The iconic Test Match Special (TMS), on the other hand, has lost out the radio rights for the series to talkSPORT, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch and is a relatively recent player in the field.

"We have got good interest from the UK and keeping all options open," said a source who is part of negotiations with the British companies. Sky Sports, by the way, has done every winter (England's overseas tours), bar one, since 1989. A Sky spokesperson has not returned calls and texts.

"It's not due to lack of interest from Sky. I suspect they feel the price is too high. The TMS bid competitively but lost out to TalkSPORT," a TMS regular told Cricbuzz. TMS is part of BBC Radio and is known to have engaged with some of the greatest commentators of the game.

"It will be a big loss for BBC for losing out on these rights. There is a big Asian and Indian population in England and they will be interested in the India-England series. Test Match Special has done well over the years but talkSPORT is doing well too lately by fiercely bidding for cricket rights," Derek Pringle, former England all-rounder, told Cricbuzz.

Among others, the talkSPORT broadcast team includes regulars Darren Gough, Mark Nicholas, Mark Butcher, Matt Prior, Steve Harminson and Alex Tudor. Former India batsman Aakash Chopra is also part of it; Kevin Pietersen will do the commentary for Tests.

"After the Indians took to the Aussies in their backyard I cannot wait for them to take on England. It will be a tough series but Joe Root's Test side stand a great chance as do the ODI and T20 teams. The series will capture the imagination of cricket fans all around the world and we'll be across all the live action, build up, news and analysis throughout the tour," Gough said in a statement released by talkSPORT.

England will be playing four Tests, including a day/nighter, besides eight white-ball games - five Twenty20 Internationals and three ODIs - in the two-month series here.

With no deal yet with Sky, its regulars Nasser Hussain and Mike Atherton, otherwise ubiquitously present wherever the England team travels, will not be a part of the commentary team for the India-England series. At least for the first two Tests, for which English and Hindi commentators have been named already.

Sunil Gavaskar, L Sivaramakrishnan, Harsha Bhogle, Murali Kartik and Deep Das Gupta will be part of the world feed, with Nick Knight and Butcher joining them as experts from England. The big names for the Hindi commentary are VVS Laxman, Gautam Gambhir, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra.

All the commentators will have to report at Chennai on January 30 for a six-day quarantine. The first Test starts on February 5.

Possible to either Eng/india or Oz but india most likely 'cause more test series coming up till may Month's Window.

WTC table now

World Test Championship (2019-2021) Points Table

Teams are ranked based on PCT.

Rank Team PCT Points Series Played Matches Played Matches Won Matches
Lost Matches Drawn

1 India 71.7% 430 5 13 9 3 1

2 New Zealand 70.0% 420 5 11 7 4
0

3 Australia 69.2% 332 4 14 8 4 2

4 England 65.2% 352 5* 16 9 4 3

5 South Africa 40.0% 144 3 9 3 6 0

6 Pakistan 30.7% 166 4.5 10 2 5 3

7 Sri Lanka 19.0% 80 4* 7 1 5 1

8 West Indies 11.1% 40 3 7 1 6 0

9 Bangladesh 00.0% 0 1.5 3 0 3 0

* indicates ongoing series

PCT points is Kumble's Idea to ICC

As per the current regulations WTC league standings would be determined by the percentage of points (PCT) earned by teams. PCT is the percentage of points won out of the total number of points contested by each team.

The two teams with highest PCT advance to the final. If two teams are tied on points, the team that won more series shall be ranked higher.

5 days ago — ... in the ICC World Test Championship 2019-2021 table. ... India now have a PCT of 71.66 per cent and 430 points
