51st Match, Dubai (DSC), Oct 31 2020, Indian Premier Leaguel

Delhi Capitals

Mumbai Indians

Big picture
About a couple of weeks into the tournament, these were the two sides that were among the favourites to make the top four. It was all going according to plan for the Delhi Capitals until the game against Kings XI Punjab about 10 days ago. A loss in that game was followed by two more defeats, in the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. As a result, they had to give up their top position to the Mumbai Indians, who are sitting pretty with 16 points having earned their playoff qualification.

The Capitals had a major meltdown in their last match against the Sunrisers. A brilliant Rashid Khan made sure their batting never took off and their go-to wicket-taker Kagiso Rabada had a bad day. He went wicketless for the first time in 25 IPL games and was the most expensive bowler on the day. Another thing ailing the Capitals is their batting, especially the top order. Ajinkya Rahane was brought in place of Prithvi Shaw but that has not effected a substantial turnaround. Shikhar Dhawan's brilliance won them a couple of games but the rest of the batsmen haven't been able to get going. A win in this match would give them a spot in the playoffs. But a loss here and in their final group match could possibly eliminate them if other teams in fray finish on 14 points with a better net run rate.

Meanwhile, a Rohit Sharma-less Mumbai are doing alright. They arguably have the best batting unit in the tournament: Ishan Kishan is enjoying his best IPL season yet, Quinton de Kock has been ably supported by his partners at the top of the order, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard have helped with superb cameos and Suryakumar Yadav has been consistently brilliant. Plus, if the batting order has a rare day off, they've got Jasprit Bumrah, their ultimate weapon of choice, who has been lethal especially in the death overs, where he got 12 of his 20 wickets this season.

Mumbai have an excellent net run rate, and after their win against Royal Challengers Bangalore, they've also all but sealed a top-two finish. All the pressure is definitely on the demoralised Capitals in this encounter.

Likely XIs

Mumbai Indians: 1 Ishan Kishan, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Saurabh Tiwary, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt), 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 James Pattinson, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit Bumrah.

Delhi Capitals: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Prithvi Shaw/Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Harshal Patel/Tushar Deshpande, 8 Axar Patel, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Anrich Nortje

Previous meeting
Fifties from Suryakumar Yadav and Quinton de Kock, and a 15-ball 28 from Ishan Kishan, helped Mumbai chase down 162 with two balls remaining.

Strategy Punt
The Capitals have been using Shimron Hetmyer as a floater this season and he has been quite impressive in his role, striking at nearly 150 and also providing the finishing touches. Given how the Capitals' batting order has struggled in the last few games, Hetmyer can probably be given the No. 4 spot, which is usually reserved for Rishabh Pant, and use the latter as a floater instead. Hetmyer has done well in the middle overs in T20s this year, averaging 68.8 and striking at 140 in overs 7 to 15 in addition to tackling spinners well.

The Royal Challengers might have missed a trick in their previous match Mumbai by not bowling Washington Sundar to the left-handed opening pair of Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan. The Capitals can take a cue from this and get R Ashwin to bowl from one end and share the new ball duty with Rabada. Ashwin has dismissed Quinton de Kock thrice in four meetings.

Stats that matter
Ishan Kishan is one among the five players to have a strike rate of 140-plus against pacers and spinners in IPL 2020

Rishabh Pant needs 11 runs to reach 2000 runs in IPL

Kieron Pollard needs 27 runs to reach 3000 runs in IPL

Qualification scenarios: SRH win leaves 6 teams hanging in hope

October 31 2020 by Deepu Narayana
If SRH win their last game of the league, they will qualify for the playoffs irrespective of the other results
With the last round of league games to follow, only one team (Mumbai Indians) has ensured a spot in the Playoffs and only one team (Chennai Super Kings) has been knocked out. Here's what each team needs to do to qualify in their final league game.

Points table after Match 52 - RCB vs SRH

Team Mat Won Lost Points NRR
Mumbai Indians (Q) 13 9 4 18 1.296
Royal Challengers Bangalore 13 7 6 14 -0.145
Delhi Capitals 13 7 6 14 -0.159
Sunrisers Hyderabad 13 6 7 12 0.555
Kings XI Punjab 13 6 7 12 -0.133
Rajasthan Royals 13 6 7 12 -0.377
Kolkata Knight Riders 13 6 7 12 -0.467
Chennai Super Kings 13 5 8 10 -0.532
Delhi Capitals

Three big defeats in their last three matches has put Capitals' chance of qualification in jeopardy ahead of their last game and have severely dented their NRR. Having said that, all they need to do is to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday and book a spot in the first qualifier against Mumbai Indians. If they lose their final league game, they will depend on other results to ensure qualification. They would need at least two of the three scenarios to happen:

- Kings XI Punjab lose to Chennai Super Kings and finish on 12 points

- Sunrisers Hyderabad lose to Mumbai Indians and finish on 12 points

- Kolkata Knight Riders-Rajasthan Royals match is decided by a bare minimum margin as possible such that the winner's NRR doesn't overtake that of Delhi Capitals

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Like Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore also have fate in their own hands. If they beat Delhi Capitals, they qualify for the Playoffs for the first time in four years and they meet Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier. They can even go through with a defeat. Like Delhi Capitals, the NRR for Bangalore fell below that of Kings XI Punjab following their defeat on Saturday. If they remain on 14 points, they will need at least two of the three scenarios to happen:

- Kings XI Punjab lose to Chennai Super Kings and finish on 12 points

- Sunrisers Hyderabad lose to Mumbai Indians and finish on 12 points

- Kolkata Knight Riders-Rajasthan Royals match is decided by a bare minimum margin as possible such that the winner's NRR doesn't overtake that of Royal Challengers Bangalore

As Delhi Capitals-Royal Challengers Bangalore fixture is scheduled for Monday after the Kolkata Knight Riders-Rajasthan Royals match on Sunday, the two teams would know the exact margin to keep their NRR ahead of the winner of Kolkata Knight Riders-Rajasthan Royals clash.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Thumping wins against Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore have put Sunrisers Hyderabad's campaign back on track. They have jumped to the fourth place ahead of other teams on 12 points thanks to their superior NRR of +0.555. Among the four sides with 12 points each, Sunrisers are the only side who have their fate in their own hands, thanks to their superior NRR. The equation for them is simple - beat Mumbai Indians in the final league game of the season in Sharjah and qualify. If they lose that, they stand eliminated.

Kings XI Punjab

A run of five consecutive wins came to a halt at the hands of a spirited run chase by the Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi on Friday. They can now get to a maximum of 14 points if they win their final league game against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Even that might not suffice as three more teams can possibly get to 14 and pip Kings XI Punjab on NRR. Kings XI Punjab's NRR is ahead of both Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore which ensures the NRR of the loser of Delhi Capitals-Royal Challengers Bangalore contest will stay below that of Kings XI Punjab if they beat Chennai Super Kings.

The direct way for Kings XI Punjab to qualify is by them beating Chennai Super Kings and either Sunrisers Hyderabad lose to Mumbai Indians or Kolkata Knight Riders-Rajasthan Royals match is decided by a bare minimum margin as possible such that the winner's NRR doesn't overtake that of Kings XI Punjab. Rajasthan Royals (-0.377) have a better NRR than Kolkata Knight Riders (-0.467), so even if Kings XI beat Chennai Super Kings by a bare minimum margin of one run, Rajasthan Royals would need to win by a margin of around 64 runs/43 balls to spare to get their NRR above Kings XI Punjab. For Kolkata Knight Riders, the margin is around 86 runs/64 balls to spare.

If Kings XI Punjab lose to Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, they stand eliminated.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals have stayed afloat in the competition after two thumping run chases in their last two matches against Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. The direct way for them to qualify is by winning their final league match against Kolkata Knight Riders and hope Kings XI Punjab lose to Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad. In that case, Rajasthan Royals will get to 14 points while Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad will stay on 12 points.

Rajasthan Royals could get knocked out on NRR even if they win on Sunday if Kings XI Punjab beat Chennai Super Kings and/or Sunrisers Hyderabad win against Mumbai Indians, as all the other sides that can get to 14 points have a better NRR than them at present.

If they lose to Knight Riders on Sunday, they are eliminated.

Kolkata Knight Riders

The last ball defeat against Chennai Super Kings has come as a killer blow for Kolkata Knight Riders at this crucial juncture of their campaign. The best they can get to now is 14 points which can be equalled by as many as at least three other teams - Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the loser of the Delhi Capitals-Royal Challengers Bangalore fixture. Of the four sides, Kolkata Knight Riders have the lowest NRR (-0.467) which severely hampers their prospect of qualifying in such a scenario.

The best way now for Kolkata Knight Riders to qualify is by them beating Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, Kings XI Punjab lose to Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad lose to Mumbai Indians. In that case, Kolkata Knight Riders will finish with 14 points, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab will end with 12 points each and Kolkata Knight Riders go ahead on 14 points without NRR coming into play.

Kolkata Knight Riders play the last game of the weekend after Kings XI Punjab play theirs and they will have a clear picture of what needs to be done to go past Kings XI Punjab's NRR.

If Kolkata Knight Riders lose to Rajasthan Royals, they stand eliminated irrespective of the results of other matches.

KKR/RR will also need a healthy win to ensure that their NRR doesn't drop below that of DC/RCB in case of a tie on 14 points. DC /RCB have an advantage since they'll know the exact margin by the time they play.

TEAM M W L PT NRR
MI 13 9 4 18 1.296
RCB 13 7 6 14 -0.145
DC 13 7 6 14 -0.159
SRH 13 6 7 12 0.555
KXIP 13 6 7 12 -0.133
RR 13 6 7 12 -0.377
KKR 13 6 7 12 -0.467
CSK 13 5 8 10 -0.532

Very very interesting scenario, only MUMBAI is safe, CSK is already out, rest all are in the race till the end.

MUST WIN GAMES :

KXIP must win over CSK to keep their hopes alive. Must do it with better run rate and keep fingers crossed.
KKR vs RR game, whoever wins takes the final spot in playoff, other team goes home, win they MUST with higher run rate than KXIP.
DC vs RCB is a must win for both teams, loser might even get kicked out as KXIP has better run rate, SRH would come up too if they win.
SRH must win over MI. No need to bother about run rate, they are cool on it. if not, they are out.

53rd Match, Abu Dhabi, Nov 1 2020, Indian Premier League

Kings XI Punjab

Super Kings chose to field
:macarena

Chennai Super Kings: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Ambati Rayudu, 4 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 5 N Jagadeesan, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Imran Tahir, 11 Lungi Ngidi

Kings XI Punjab: 1 Mayank Agarwal, 2 KL Rahul (capt, wk), 3 Chris Gayle, 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Mandeep Singh, 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 Jimmy Neesham, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 M Ashwin, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Ravi Bishnoi

Sandaru Herath: "KXIP has picked their team expecting that they would get to chase! Going with 4 genuine bowlers and Neesham is going to be a huge risk in such a crunch game!"

Naveed: "Good to see an extra batsman included fro KXIP, maybe they will go even harder at the top"

Definitely not my last game in yellow, says Dhoni. Faf is fit, so he's back. Watson is out. Tahir is in for Santner. Shardul is in for Karn. Maxwell misses out, Neesham comes in. Arshdeep is out and Mayank comes in for KXIP.

Chennai Supers Kings have elected to bowl.

1:25pm The toss in under five minutes. Here are your My11 Circle fantasy picks for this match:

Pro Tip: Expect KL Rahul and Chris Gayle to step it up given it is a must-win game for the Kings XI.

Our XI: KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, Chris Gayle, Ambati Rayudu, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shane Watson, Sam Curran, Ravi Bishnoi, Chris Jordan, Deepak Chahar.

Substitutes: Mayank Agarwal, Mohammed Shami, MS Dhoni, M Ashwin

Player availability: There has been no official update on Mayank Agarwal's fitness status yet, but all other players are available for selection.

NOTE: We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant) updates, so please finalise your team after the toss.

Here's what the qualification scenario looks like for Kings XI Punjab. Do click the link to see what the calculations are for the other teams:

Kings XI Punjab: Played 13, Points 12, NRR -0.133

The heavy defeats for the Capitals and the Royal Challengers mean the Kings XI Punjab now have a higher net run rate (NRR) than both those teams. That means a win by any margin in their last game, against the Chennai Super Kings, will keep the Kings XI above the team that loses Monday's Capitals-Royal Challengers game. (The winner of that game will qualify with 16 points.)

If the Sunrisers Hyderabad win their last match, they will go through for sure, which means the Kings XI will also have to ensure their NRR stays above that of the winner of the game between the Rajasthan Royals and the Kolkata Knight Riders. Here is how that situation pans out:

- If the Kings XI score 180 and win by a run, the Royals will have to win by 65 runs (if they score 180) or in fewer than 13 overs (if chasing 160) to go past the Kings XI's NRR

- For the Knight Riders, the corresponding margins are 85 runs and 9.3 overs

Those look to be fairly difficult asks, so the Kings XI Punjab should be quite safe if they seal a victory on Sunday.

1pm Good afternoon and welcome back to our coverage of the IPL. It is the beginning of the end. We're officially down to each team having one league stage match remaining. For CSK, that means the end of their most arduous season since the IPL began. For KXIP, it means something entirely else as they set their sights on a playoffs spot. Their five-match winning streak came to an end the other night, but they could well be another small streak away from a maiden IPL title. MS Dhoni said that it didn't matter that his team was out of contention; what matters is that they stay relevant. Which is an elegant way of saying they'll have no qualms with crushing some dreams today. A fascinating day begins at the IPL. Here is Vishal's preview: Party spoilers Super Kings in the way of Kings XI's playoff hunt
