Knight Rider into Final beating Timid Tallawah with 5 over spare 11 win out of 11 games.

Hosein, Simmons drive TKR into the CPL final, Simmons beat Gayle's CPL record of 2354

September 08 2020

TKR brushed aside Jamaica Tallawahs in the semifinal
And then it was 11.

Those that were secretly hoping that Trinbago Knight Riders' 10-game winning streak through the league phase would count for little in a knockout game had another thing coming. The two-time champions (as the TKR brand) swatted aside Jamaica Tallawahs by nine wickets, chasing down a total of 107 with five overs to spare.

The Knight Riders were as dominant, if not more, once Kieron Pollard won the toss on a typically spin-conducive surface at the Brian Lara Stadium. Setting the tempo at the outset top was local lad Akeal Hosein, who produced a fine display of left-arm orthodox spin bowling to finish with figures 3 for 14 from his four overs.

Spin was always going to be the flavour of the game but that didn't leave the Tallawahs any better prepared for it. Off the fourth ball of the game, Jermaine Blackwood was cleaned up by Hosein without having added a run to the scorecard. Blackwood's opening partner didn't fare any better, his two-stay at the crease ended by the other left-arm spinner, Khary Pierre.

To the Tallawahs credit, they did look to disrupt proceedings by having Mujeeb Ur Rahman bat at three, but their attempts to induce a little chaos in the middle blew up on their face when his attempts at a reverse slog, took an edge and ricocheted off his pads into the hands of first slip. Hosein picked up a third in his next when Asif Ali slashed a short ball straight to point. The Tallawahs were effectively buried in the PowerPlay at 28 for 4 with Sunil Narine still to come.

Yet Nkrumah Bonner fought on manfully from one end. He backed away and cut both Fawad Ahmed and Narine for fours to inject some life into the innings. By the half-way mark Bonner had brought the run-rate closer to six without the loss of another wicket. It was one positive step in the right direction. There was, however, little to foreshadow their two giant backwards steps.

Bonner chopped Fawad Ahmed on to his stumps for a fighting 41. Andre Russell, on who most Tallawahs games hinges, was dismissed by a questionable decision. Russell gesticulated and bellowed and even received a sympathetic tap on the shoulder from Dwayne Bravo but had to trudge back to the pavilion. Replays showed there was no bat on ball to have adjudged him caught. It was an effective death knell. Captain Rovman Powell, not one to throw in the towel, ensured his team batted out the remaining overs, his 33 from 35 ensuring they crossed the 100-run mark.

The Knight Riders had little to fear in chase despite Mujeeb castling Sunil Narine in the second over. Once Lendl Simmons and Tion Webster had seen off the Afghan's overs, the other spinners, including Sandeep Lamichhane, had little to offer in terms of bite off the surface. The seamers, Fidel Edwards, Andre Russell and Carlos Brathwaite went at over 10 runs an over each as Simmons cut loose. He managed to get himself to a half-century before their place in yet another CPL final was rubber-stamped.

Brief scores: Jamaica Tallawahs 107/7 in 20 overs (Nkrumah Bonner 41, Rovman Powell 33; Akeal Hosein 3-14, Khary Pierre 2-29) lost to Trinbago Knight Riders 111/1 in 15 overs (Lendl Simmons 54*, Tion Webster 44*; Mujeeb Ur Rahman 1-18) by 9 wickets

St Lucia Zouks reach summit clash with crushing win

September 09 2020

St Lucia Zouks' bowlers bundled out the opposition for a mere 55 runs.

St Lucia Zouks powered through to their maiden Caribbean Premier League final after handing the Guyana Amazon Warriors a crushing ten-wicket defeat in Trinidad. After having had stormed into the semifinals with four wins on the trot, the Warriors crashed out of the CPL in quite the anticlimatic fashion. For a side that was high on momentum, all they managed on Tuesday (September 8) was the second-lowest total in the CPL's history after being skittled for just 55 in 13.4 overs. St Lucia Zouks, in reply, needed just 4.3 overs to cruise past the finish line.

In the 27 balls they faced, the Zouks struck five fours and four sixes, much in contrast to the Warriors, who managed only two each through their innings. It all began with Scott Kuggeleijn, who was on the brink of a hat-trick after the fourth ball after Darren Sammy had asked the Warriors to bat. An edge from Brandon King followed by Shimron Hetmyer shouldering arms to one heading for the poles pegged the Warriors back. They lost wickets at regular intervals thereafter to the point of no return. Runs dried up and the innings was going nowhere, with only three batsmen reaching double figures, trapped in the web woven by the Zouks' spinners, who picked the remaining eight wickets as all the bowlers returned a wicket at least. Only opener Chandrapaul Hemraj stuck around until the 13th over for his 26-ball 25 other than which, the scorecard tells a sorry tale.

In a paltry chase and with one foot in the final already, Rahkeem Cornwall and Mark Deyal were ruthless in the chase. Cornwall smashed the otherwise economical Chris Green for two sixes over deep midwicket to set the tone in the first over. Deyal followed suit, as back-to-back boundaries in the second had Imran Tahir concede 13 runs too with the Zouks in cruise mode. The openers crossed the line soon after, completing the fastest chase in the history of T20 franchise cricket, with the second semifinal lasting just 17.1 overs.

Nothing but a win like that could, perhaps, give the Zouks the much-needed confidence to go up against the Trinbago Knight Riders in the final, who are unbeaten in the competition so far. After winning all their 10 group stage game, they annihilated the Jamaica Tallawahs by nine wickets in the semifinal to make yet another final appearance. In their first CPL final ever, up against three-time champions, can the Zouks halt the Knight Riders' juggernaut - a winning.
