Dareen Bravo, Munro & Simmons (96) put on 144 for 2nd wicket as Knight Riders won 8 out of 8 games, Raza shines

Match 23
Knight rider vs Patroits

Simmons special makes it eight in eight for Knight Riders

September 02 2020 by Cricbuzz

Lendl Simmons composed a quick-fire 63-ball 96 to help Trinbago Knight Riders down St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by a comfortable margin of 59 runs. Patriots could manage just 115 in pursuit of a target of 175, and hand the Knight Riders their eighth successive win, still undefeated so far in the CPL 2020.

While chasing down a competitive target, St Kitts and Nevis needed a solid start but they lost Evin Lewis in the second over. The promising Joshua Da Silva (29) and Chris Lynn (34) tried to resurrect the innings with a stand of 57. However, Dwayne Bravo and Pravin Tambe picked up the key scalps of Lynn and Da Silva to peg the opposition back. Once the duo was dismissed, Patriots suffered a collapse, losing their next five wickets for just 25 runs.

Rayad Emrit and Imran Khan then ensured that Patriots wouldn't get bowled out with an unbeaten stand of 17. In fact, Lynn and Da Silva were the only two batsmen to cross the 20-run mark. For Trinbago, Sikandar Raza picked up three wickets for just 15 runs.

Earlier, Simmons's breezy knock was the highlight of Trinbago's innings. The opener smacked seven fours and six sixes in his innings and shared a partnership of 144 with Darren Bravo. Incidentally, Bravo's contribution was only 36 in that partnership. Eventually, Dominic Drakes, the left-arm pacer, dismissed Simmons, but by then the opener had taken his side to a substantial total.

Trinbago take pole position on the table with 16 points, while Patriots have just two points and find themselves rooted to the last position.

Brief scores: Trinbago Knight Riders 174/4 in 20 overs (Lendl Simmons 96; Dareen Bravo 36, Munro 9, Dominic Drakes 2-36) beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 115/7 in 20 overs (Chris Lynn 34, Joshua Da Silva 29; Sikandar Raza 3-15)by 59 runs

Match 26

Barbados vs warrior

Tridents knocked out as Guyana spinners secure another easy win

September 04 2020

Romario Shepherd (3 for 22) and Imran Tahir (3 for 12) shared six wickets between them to help Guyana Amazon Warriors ease past Barbados Tridents by six wickets. Tridents were able to manage just 89 for 9 in their 20 overs before Warriors completed the chase in 14.2 overs.

As a result, Barbados Tridents were knocked out of the tournament. It is the first time in the history of the CPL that a defending champion has not been able to qualify for the knockouts.

Put in, Tridents looked like a deflated unit right from the start. After being 14 for 2, they soon slipped to 28 for 4. The move to send Rashid Khan at No. 3 too failed as Afghanistan spinner bagged a first-ball duck. Chris Green continued his good form and once again was very economical - giving away just 17 runs from his four overs. There was some resistance towards the end - by Mitchell Santner and Nyeem Young - but the top-order failure meant they weren't able to motor towards a challenging score.

Warriors were rocked early in the chase when Santner dismissed Brandon King on the first ball of the innings but things settled down pretty quickly as Chandrapaul Hemraj and Shimron Hetmyer scored 35 for the second wicket. Hetmyer dug in and took the side home with Ross Taylor too chipping in with unbeaten 16.

Brief scores: Barbados Tridents 89/9 in 20 overs (Imran Tahir 3-12, Romario Shepherd 3-22) lost to Guyana Amazon Warriors 90/4 in 14.2 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 32*) by six wickets.

Tallawah vs Barbados

Cricbuzz

Holder, Santner ensure consolation win for Tridentsp

Holder led the way with the bat for the Tridents
A captain's knock from Jason Holder and a fine all-round performance from Mitchell Santner saw Barbados Tridents finish their difficult season with a consolation win, rendering Andre Russell's ballistic 54 off 28 to no use. The seven-wicket loss for Jamaica Tallawahs, who failed to defend their 161, means they are now confirmed fourth, and set to clash with league toppers and yet unbeaten Trinbago Knight Riders in the first semifinal

Opting to bat, Tallawahs had the perfect launchpad provided by Jermaine Blackwood, who they promoted to open. He laid into the Tridends' two premier bowlers - Joshua Bishop and Holder - early, taking the team to 22 without loss after four overs, before smashing the first six of the game, to double that score by the end of the powerplay.

Glenn Phillips got a reprieve on 14, but the second chance lasted just three more balls as Bishop opened his account in the eighth over. The wicket sucked the momentum off Tallawahs innings, who were reduced to just 69 for 1 at the halfway mark.

Blackwood brought up his fifty with a six off Keon Harding's first ball of the game. And when Asif Ali fell, cutting Hayden Walsh, it brought Andre Russell to the crease, which saw another gear shift in Tallawahs' innings. And Russell got to it from the word go. He luckily survived an edge off Holder that deceived the keeper and went for his first boundary, but then on it was sheer power as he slammed a couple of sixes off Walsh as Tallwahs surged to 112 for 2 at the end of 15 overs

Santner managed to keep a check on Russell but Rashid, after going for runs, was unlucky to see his googly outfoxing the hard-hitter, hitting the stumps but the bails never came off. Russell went on to bring his fifty off 26 balls in the final over with a six, before eventually falling to Rashid. However, the two vital fifties ensured their team had their best score of the season so far - 161 for 4.

That didn't prove nearly enough through, even against the then bottom-ranked side. Even though Oshane Thomas justified his recall with a first-ball beauty to dismiss Johnson Charles for a golden duck, the over went for 17 with Jonathan Carter, also promoted to open, laying into the attack early. At the other end, Shamarh Brooks too fell cheaply, to debutant left-arm seamer Preston McSween, but that brought Holder to the crease.Holder kicked off his innings with a six, guiding the team to their best powerplay score of the tournament, 61 for 2.

Holder raised his fifty with a six too - gleefully accepting a Brathwaite full-toss - and off just 28 balls to propel the Tridents to a decent 88 for 2 at the halfway stage. He next went after Lamichhane, hitting him for a six and a four in the same over before eventually getting dismissed LBW to him after a well composed 69 off 42.

Tallawahs had the late window of opportunity but failed to grab it as Santner, too, justified his promotion with a fiery unbeaten 35 that contained two sixes and three boundaries that would help Tridents finish off the chase rather easily, and with ten balls to spare.

Brief scores: Jamaica Tallawahs 161/4 (Jermaine Blackwood 74, Andre Russell 54*; Joshua Bishop 1/30, Rashid Khan 1/32) lost to Barbados Tridents 165/3 (Jason Holder 69, Jonathan Carter 42*, Mitchell Santner 35*; Sandeep Lamichhane 1/26) by 7 wickets

Match 31 - Sep 08, Tuesday

Knight Riders vs Tallawa

08-SEP-2020, 07:30 PM

1st Semi-Final, Tarouba, Sep 8 2020, Caribbean Premier League

Trinbago Knight Rider

Flawless Trinbago Knight Riders favourites against up-and-down Jamaica Tallawahs

Big picture :saurabh:

In a format that's so fickle, Trinbago Knight Riders have been flawless, sweeping the league stage with ten victories in as many matches. No Sunil Narine? No problem. Left-arm fingerspinners Khary Pierre and Akeal Hosein have made inroads with the new ball while Tion Webster has filled in at the top with the bat.

No Colin Munro? No problem again. Fellow New Zealander Tim Seifert, an instinctively aggressive batsman, has tailored his game to suit the turning tracks in Trinidad and then there's Darren Bravo, who has reinvented himself as a strong white-ball middle-order batsman over the past few CPL seasons. No Ali Khan? No problem once again. Eighteen-year-old Jayden Seales has been among the wickets. Indian legspinner Pravin Tambe, who is 30 years older than Seales, has been throwing himself on the field in addition to being tidy with the ball.

Fawad Ahmed, Sikandar Raza and Lendl Simmons have had their moments as well. Throw the experience of captain Kieron Pollard, his predecessor Dwayne Bravo, and head coach Brendon McCullum into the mix, you get a world-beating T20 franchise. Every member of the Knight Riders' roster has got a game, but nobody has been dropped for performance or the lack thereof, according to Pollard. The overwhelming home advantage - the entire tournament has been played in Trinidad in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic - has helped them as well. While the injured Munro is doubtful for the playoffs, Narine, who has recovered from kidney stones, is set to slot back into the XI.

Facing the unenviable task of stopping the Knight Riders juggernaut are Rovman Powell's Jamaica Tallawahs, who, in contrast, have sneaked into the semi-finals by virtue of just three wins at a superior net run-rate than last year's champions Barbados Tridents. They have Andre Russell, Asif Ali, and Carlos Brathwaite in their middle order, but have often gone bust rather than boom this season. After they were 84 for 0 against Daren Sammy's St Lucia Zouks, they botched a chase of 146, suffering another meltdown.

Their bowling attack, however, looks in much healthier shape, with Afghanistan's Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Nepal's Sandeep Lamichhane showing Tallawahs - and other spinners - the way. They've collected 27 wickets between them and if they keep it up on Tuesday, Tallawahs will have a better chance of toppling Knight Riders, who won't have the luxury of another crack at the final this season despite finishing as league leaders.

Form guide
Trinbago Knight Riders WWWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Jamaica Tallawahs LLLWL

In the spotlight
Most sixes in the tournament: check. Wickets with the ball: check. Kieron Pollard has had another bumper CPL, hitting peak form, ahead of the IPL in the UAE. His tactics as captain have also been savvy, especially on the field where it seems he uses data from one-on-one match-ups to enhance his bowlers' threat. At some points in the tournament, he has even stationed himself at short leg or silly-point to empower his spinners.

In a Tallawahs line-up filled with hit-or-miss batsmen, Glenn Phillips has been the failsafe, emerging as the top-scorer, with 314 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 127.64. He might be in a direct shootout against Seifert on Tuesday. His CPL runs often help him find a place in New Zealand's winter-training camps, but a big performance in a big game could now push him straight into the Black Caps playing XI.

Team news
Munro said on TV commentary that he's unlikely to be available for the knockouts, having missed the weekend matches as well. USA quick Ali Khan, though, has recovered from his hamstring injury and returned to action against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on Sunday. He might still have to tussle with Hosein for a spot in the semi-final.

Trinbago Knight Riders (probable): 1 Sunil Narine, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Tim Seifert (wk), 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard (capt), 6 DJ Bravo, 7 Sikandar Raza, 8 Fawad Ahmed, 9 Khary Pierre, 10 Akeal Hosein/Ali Khan, 11 Jayden Seales

Russell marked his return from a knee flare-up with back-to-back half-centuries before bagging a duck against Zouks. It remains to be seen whether he's fit enough to bowl, though. Depending on that, Tallawahs might have to choose between spinner Veerasammy Permaul and seamer Oshane Thomas.

Jamaica Tallawahs (probable): 1 Glenn Phillips (wk), 2 Jermaine Blackwood, 3 Chadwick Walton/Nkrumah Bonner/Nicholas Kirton 4 Rovman Powell (capt), 5 Andre Russell, 6 Asif Ali, 7 Carlos Brathwaite, 8 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 9 Sandeep Lamichhane, 10 Fidel Edwards, 11 Veerasammy Permaul/Oshane Thomas

Pitch and conditions
The pitches for the final week at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy have been more batting-friendly than the ones that were rolled out for the first leg of the tournament. However, they will still be some assistance for the slower bowlers.

Stats and trivia
Russell has an awesome record against Knight Riders: 565 runs in 15 innings at an average of 56.50 and strike rate of 191.52 in addition to 20 wickets. The numbers include a century and hat-trick on captaincy debut.

There's not much to separate Knight Riders and Tallawahs at this point: they've faced each other 18 times with a 9-9 record. Knight Riders have a stronger record in Trinidad, though, winning six out of their ten matches against Tallawahs.

Quotes
"Andre is the world's best allrounder and world's best allrounder for a reason."
Enough said Rovman Powell

"It's not something that we envisioned. We just spoke about having to play 12 games this tournament and being the best that we can be for 12 games. Ten out of ten is magnificent and all credit must go to the support staff, the players, and each and every one of us who came day in and day out."
