Tom Banton shines after Team Moeen collapse in intra-squad thrash

Team Vince 109 for 4 (Banton 57*) beat Team Moeen 108 (Dawson 4-21, Gregory 3-29) by six wickets

Tom Banton showed his class in the field and with the bat after Lewis Gregory and Liam Dawson shone with the ball in England's second intra-squad match ahead of the start of their one-day series against Ireland.

Gregory snared Jonny Bairstow - following a sublime catch by Banton - en route to 3 for 29 while Dawson subdued the lower order in his 4 for 21 as a side led by Moeen Ali succumbed to a meagre 108 all out in 28.4 overs.

England captain Eoin Morgan was rested so James Vince led the other team, who slipped to 4 for 3 after eight balls of their chase, but Banton ushered them home with six wickets to spare in 17.4 overs with a stylish 57 not out from 56 deliveries at the Ageas Bowl, the venue of the ODI series which gets under way next Thursday.

Jason Roy was also absent from an encounter that was once again supposed to be 40 overs a side as he was nursing a sore back, but he and Morgan are set to feature for England Lions in Sunday's game against Ireland.

While Tuesday's first warm-up was a boundary-laden affair in which Bairstow and Moeen teed off with abandon, a more sluggish surface here was exploited by some clever bowling allied with some injudicious strokeplay.

With Phil Salt and Sam Hain failing to get out of single figures, attention fell on to Bairstow again. A centurion a few days ago, the Yorkshireman could not get into his groove and departed for 13 off 21 balls following a supreme catch from Banton diving full length to his right at backward point.

That handed Gregory a wicket in his first over and he would have two in two when Liam Livingstone shaped to run down to third man only to chop on. While Moeen nudged and nurdled his way to 17, his attempt to inject more urgency into proceedings fell flat as he charged down the wicket to Gregory and top-edged to long leg.

Salt was given another opportunity at the crease and clubbed Dawson for the first six of the innings over midwicket, but when going for another big mow he merely edged to slip for 25 off 37 balls.

From there, spin duo Dawson, on his home ground, and Adil Rashid squeezed the life out of the lower order, the former bowling Brydon Carse and Tom Curran, both attempting to cut, before trapping Saqib Mahmood in front to end the innings with 11.2 overs unused.

If there was any thought of a comfortable chase, it was snuffed out when David Willey gained a fraction of inward movement to bowl Ben Duckett and Sam Billings with the first two balls of the reply, before Vince departed in the next over after being adjudged lbw to Tom Curran.

But Banton and Laurie Evans rebuilt, slowly at first, the former taking the whip hand with crunching fours through the covers off Willey. Evans was happy to play the auxiliary role but still managed around a run a ball.

Willey could not cling on to a chance at deep midwicket that would have rivalled Banton's earlier grab as the batsman was spared on 32, and thereafter he put his foot down, emphasised when he swivel pulled Mahmood for six.

Evans chopped Henry Brookes on to his stumps for 25 to end a 67-run stand but it was of little consequence as Banton passed his 50 before Dawson sealed the win with two fours in three balls in the late evening sunshine.

2023 ICC World Cup qualifier ODI Super League to begin this week

CHENNAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday confirmed that the ODI Super League – which acts a qualification for the 2023 World Cup – will commence with defending champion England's upcoming three-match series against Ireland, starting in Southampton on July 30.

Originally, the Super League was supposed to commence in May, but because of the pandemic, three series have already been cancelled. With the calendar severely affected, there were calls to scrap the Super League concept -- introduced to add more context and meaning to the 50-over format -- and retain the ranking system to identify the eight qualifiers.

However, with the ICC deciding to move the 2023 World Cup from February-March to October-November meant there were no time constraints. "The decision last week to move the World Cup back to late 2023 gives us more time to schedule any games lost due to COVID-19 and preserve the integrity of the qualification process, meaning it will be decided on the field of play, which is important," ICC general manager Geoff Allardice said.

While the pandemic situation has improved in certain countries, the sub-continent still remains a hotspot for the virus as there are no guarantees as to when cricketing activities can resume in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Although Pakistan has been looking to play these matches at home, the current situation might force them to look at the United Arab Emirates as their home for the time being. This is understood to be the reason as to why the ICC hasn't announced the revised fixtures for now.

However, the ICC's decision to start the Super League should come as good news for most teams, especially the likes of The Netherlands, Ireland, Zimbabwe as they are now guaranteed to play 24 matches in the next three years.

In the Super League, each team will play four three-match series at home and away with each match carrying 10 points for a victory. In case of tie or no-result, both teams will get five points. Like the ICC Test Championship teams can play each other only once – either home or away – in the Super League. However, there won’t be any knockout fixtures in the Super League.

Teams that finish in the top seven gain automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup alongside hosts India. The remaining five teams then will play against the Associates in an ICC Qualifier to book the remaining two slots for the 10-team World Cup modelled like the 2019 edition in the United Kingdom.

With the Super League commencing with England taking on Ireland on Thursday, certain changes are expected with regards to the calendar. India for instance were supposed to kick-off their campaign with a three-match series against England this September, which now stands cancelled. Apart from England, the Men in Blue were supposed to face Afghanistan, South Africa, West Indies, Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

Like the Test Championship, India and Pakistan fixtures will be missing in the Super League. India will also not play any ODIs under the Super League against Bangladesh, Ireland and The Netherlands. However, both Ireland and the Dutch are likely to request the BCCI to play a couple of matches against them when they tour the United Kingdom next year.

Will Ireland match up to England in WCSL's opening tie?

July 29 2020

This will be England's first ODI outing at home since the World Cup
Cricket in bio-secure bubbles seems the obvious way forward if international contests must go on. The England and Wales Cricket Board has set a spectacular precedent of cricket in a biosphere hosting the West Indies for three Tests behind closed doors. Social distancing, daily temperature checks, filing everyday health reports are now part of the new normal. What will also be part of the new normal hereafter in ODI cricket will be the Cricket World Cup Super League to determine participants for the 2023 Men's World Cup in India. The start that was delayed due to the ongoing pandemic will now kick-off on Thursday (July 30) as England take on Ireland in a three-match series.

The Irish squad has been training in Southampton for a week now, where all the three games are to be played. Given that Ireland's last series was against Afghanistan back in March, the two warm-up games leading into the series have given the players much-needed game-time. Ireland in their intra-squad game, however, faced the problem of their fielders failing to pick up the white ball against the backdrop of empty stands which are cream-colored. However, the youngsters in Ireland's squad got a good hit out, in particular Harry Tector, who scored a pair of fifties in Ireland's intra-squad practice match and their game against England Lions. He, along with Curtis Campher, is in line to make an ODI debut. Ireland, who had initially come with a squad of 22, will name 14-man teams on a match-by-match basis. Among the reserves are left-arm spinner George Dockrell and batsman Gary Wilson with the selectors opting to give the younger players a chance in the international fold first-up, with even Balbirnie reiterating the goal being towards building towards the mega event in 2023.

The upcoming ODI series will be England's first at home since the World Cup last year. With Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer missing out for having been involved in the Test series, it provides a golden opportunity for some of England's fringe players to make a push for a place in the XI. Sam Billings and David Willey make a return after having missed out on the World Cup, while Reece Topley is making a comeback after four years with a back injury keeping him out in recent times. Tom Banton and Saqib Mahmood keep their places after having faced South Africa at the beginning of the year.

The ODI series is also a chance for England's Test hopefuls like Jonny Bairstow and Joe Denly to push for a longer-format recall. Moeen Ali confirmed his availability after a break, but was overlooked for the West Indies series as Dom Bess was picked ahead of him. However, he was named vice-captain for the three-match series and if he hits his straps, could well be in line for a recall.

This series will also mark the change of the ICC deciding to leave the third umpire to monitor all front-foot no-balls in white-ball cricket. In matters just concerning the popping-crease or not, skipper Balbirnie acknowledged the need for Ireland's bowlers to be tidier if they are to beat England in their conditions after a rusty show in the practice games. And with England's batting running deep, they have a tough task on hand. Ireland have beaten England just once in the 10 ODIs they've played. If they are to take a cue from Scotland and stir an upset, they need to "ensure not to get overawed by the occasion."

When: Thursday July 30, 2020.

Where: The Rose Bowl, Southampton

What to expect: Southampton usually throws up some good batting wickets. And luckily for both sides, there's no rain forecast. With the firepower in the England squad, the Irish skipper rightly said the bowlers will need to be tidier if they are to tie England down. Else, it may just be a run-fest.

Team News

England: With the Test players not permitted out of the bio-secure bubble, the ODI side has a different look. Skipper Eoin Morgan will be without Buttler, Root, Stokes, Woakes, Archer and Wood. Bairstow and Roy will occupy top spots, while in the absence of the regulars, Tom Curran will more likely than not lead the pace attack.

Squad: Eoin Morgan (Captain), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Joe Denly, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey

Ireland: Balbirnie on the eve of the game confirmed that Ireland will likely have a bowling all-rounder (Simi Singh) at 7. "Stirling and Delany haven't got enough overs under their belt yet. Playing an extra batter can be an option but at the moment, we're likely to get the bowling all-rounder in," he said. Mark Adair, Ireland's leading ODI wicket-taker in 2019, misses out after not being at full fitness following his ankle injury earlier in the year, but Ireland are hopeful of Paul Stirling being fit enough to make the XI after missing the intra-squad game with a calf niggle.

Squad: Andrew Balbirnie (c), Paul Stirling, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, Kevin O'Brien, William Porterfield, Boyd Rankin, Simi Singh, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young

What they said:

"The standard and skill level that has been produced since guys have come together has been exceptional. It's been way above the standard that I expected given the time we had off. Certainly, the two guys were unlucky to miss out along with others. I think we're blessed with a high calibre group of top-order batters, not only in the first XI but also sitting in the wings. Even the guys that will play this series, and the guys that are left out, will probably need some injuries to get call-ups." - Eoin Morgan

"It's obviously about World Cup qualification. This Super League is our chance to get in there. As I said earlier, it'll be this team's greatest achievement if we manage to qualify for the World Cup. That's the foremost aim. We've got a lot of tough cricket to play. For now, we have these three games which we didn't think we would have. So, we've got to enjoy ourselves." - Andy Balbirnie, Ireland's captain.

1st ODI (D/N), Southampton, Jul 30 2020, Ireland tour of England

A world away from World Cup glory, one-day cricket is back on English soil

Pitch and conditions
Balbirnie said he expected a little bit more grass to be left on than usual, with the same strip set to be used for the first and second ODIs. That could mean some early movement off the seam. In the warm-up games, batting proved easier under the lights, with the ball coming onto the bat more on relatively slow surfaces. The forecast is just about perfect with clear skies and a top temperature of 24 degrees expected.

Stats and trivia
On game day, it will have been 139 days since the last men's ODI (at the SCG on March 13), making it the longest gap since 1991, when there were 143 days between matches.

Harry Tector, who has 20 T20I caps at the age of 20, has scored half-centuries in each of his last three List A matches.

England have lost to Ireland only once in their nine completed ODIs going back to 2006. Although it was quite a famous one.

Quotes
"We're just delighted both to be back playing but also to have cricket back on TV. I think there's a huge and monumental effort gone into everything to make it happen so we're extremely grateful for that and also grateful for Ireland coming over."
Eoin Morgan is happy to be here
