I dont think those 3 minnows will be no-1 even if England stays for 10-15 years. Probably they wont get enough test matches to play to be no-1. But you never know . . :)

South Africa is playing Test matches in near future and so is Australia, so either of them 2 can be next no 1 early next year. England is playing in UAE later this year, first time they play a tests in non bouncy, non seaming wickets since their loss in West Indies, so that may narrow the gap. Last time England won a series in these conditions was 2001.

If India can recover from their recent loses and comeback and win Australian series, they have a outside chance of making it.

Ofcourse Saffers are the most deserving.

Thats a pretty big lead for the English just after one series.

I'll go out on a limb and say Australia. A few series wins in a row and not having to play England for a while should be helpful.

Yep, the ranking system is weird. If win over a team ranked higher than you, you get more points (bonus) compared to when you win over a team ranked lower than you. No wonder afridi is soooo pissed off after windies test tour as even after well fought win he came to know on no changes in their rank and very few points to show.

I am sure they now would change the rules as now the English reached the top spot and as with everything else now is the time to change the rules as it would help them prolong the ranking position. Watchout for that announcement coming soon!

Meh. With the test team they have, no way I see Aussies go up, only way they go is downwards.

Australia won't be no.1 anytime soon, thats for sure. Though they may welly occupy India's no. 3 spot early next year, leaving India at 4 (and falling ?) which would probably be a more accurate reflection anyway. They have still never taken a series against a good side away from home. The immense magnitude of their recent series loss gives a clue to the direction they are heading. Their best players due for retirement soon...

I doubt anyone will pip the Pom's for no.1 for some time. They took the the top spot with some force, if they thumped the Aussies, they made India look like your average b grade club side (but with far less fight). Even then, that might reflect poorly on many b grade club sides. The South Africans are probably capable of giving them a run, but are too inconsistent to stay at the top and strangely they seem to struggle at home. They will have their hands full with the Aussies soon.

As much as I hate to say it being brought up to consider all Pom cricketers as the enemy, they are not only top of the rankings but unlike India's little tenure, are very clearly the best team by some distance. I can see them dominating for some years. It's anyones guess who will be no.1 after them, but the players to do that haven't emerged yet, none of the present squads will do it.

Meh, England are only number one due to fortunate timing (them being average whilst everyone else is poor) the no.1 ranking will flick between England and South Africa for a while - until Australia make it their own again.

Same as India. I agree with you. But thats how it should be in a sport that only has 10 teams. There should never be a situation where the top team is light years away from others. Ofcourse the right way would be for each team to have competitive bowling and batting attacks.

England is no 1 today and will continue to be till they are defeated and others win consistently. No 2 ways about it.

In the vacuum left since the demise of the Aussies, the Pom's are the only team so far to look convincing in their place. They haven't just seized it, they stormed it.

A bigger problem is that I have trouble finding anyone in the squad to detest. As a group they even seem lik, li, l, l..... sorry can't bring myself to say it. Even Barbie (Broad) seems to have settled down. Where are the Boycott's, Botham's. Greig's, Gatting's etc? The people I liked to see fail because they appeared (to a biased Aussie) to be complete kn0bs. A sad state of affairs. Lift your game England, do something about it before the next Ashes. :D

Previous No-1 was capable to win in Sub Continent. Present No-1 is capable to do that??????????

You mean the previous no.1 had better results in more familiar, favourable conditions. Most teams find that helpful (strangely, except for the South Africans :D ). The sub continent is only one place anyway, not necessarily the only thing used to gauge success. Ask Ricky, I'm sure he would agree :D .England have already thumped the (albeit, relatively weak) Aussies away from home. Going by their last series, India would be up against it even with home advantage. It's not just the win, it's the magnitude of the win. It's a bit like a claycourt tennis player getting beaten 6-0 6-0 6-0 on grass. Different conditions might help make it an actual contest, but the result still stands. This was like reigning boxing champion being floored 3 times in the fist round. Though, mercifully for boxers, they don't have to get back up and suffer a thrashing for the remaining rounds. It did appear that decisive.

Anyway, enough of the Pom fanboy stuff. Now that they are no.1 it's time to start supporting whoever they play. :D

Englad lost in West Indies. Their only away wins are in Australia, NZ and Bangladesh.

A little known fact is England's Test series played in England is considered an Away series to calculate the ranking.

Fair enough Leo. That makes sense.
To win a test series in India is not an easy thing to do. Still, I wouldn't underestimate them. The next 18 months or so will be interesting, England have a couple of difficult series next year.

Things have changed remarkably since they were skittled for 50 something against the Windies. I don't see that happening again any time soon. Though I remember it gave me quite a smile (and false Ashes hopes) at the time. :D
Seems strange this series would be considered an away series. Do you know the reason for that?

It was an away series, because, it was scheduled as one. Because of trouble staging any cricket in Pakistan, an alternate venue was chosen, that venue was England.

The Australia Pakistan series last year was a away series for Australia, home for Pakistan, but staged in England
