Favourites India out to test bench strength against Ireland

June 25 2022

The series provides a platform for the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Avesh Khan, Rahul Tripathi and the returning Sanju Samson to make an impression.

You can make it to - On June 26, the Indian cricket fans could be in a bit of a quandary as to which game to follow. On one hand, Indian players will be partaking in a practice game ahead of the crucial fifth and final Test against England at Edgbaston. On the same day, an Indian team will be taking on Ireland in a T20I in Dublin. The BCCI fielding two sides and in different formats is an indicator about the kind of depth Indian cricket possesses. It also says something about the hectic schedule.

As far as the T20I series is concerned, the Hardik Pandya-led side will start as favourites. The series provides a platform for a slew of fringe players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Avesh Khan, Rahul Tripathi and the returning Sanju Samson to make an impression ahead of the T20 WC to be held in Australia. In particular, it is an important series for Gaikwad as he struggled for form in the T20Is versus South Africa at home. Some of the players who didn't get a chance despite being included in the squad against South Africa - Venkatesh Iyer, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Hooda and Co. - would also be hoping to find a place in the XI.

It is also a series of significance for the dashing middle-order bat, Suryakumar Yadav as he is returning from a forearm injury. It would also be interesting to see whether the think-tank would prefer Yuzvendra Chahal's loopy leg-breaks and googlies or Ravi Bishnoi's quick-through-the-air googlies and straighter ones. Incidentally, Chahal has found success at the venue where the two matches would be played.

Meanwhile, Ireland would be hoping to put their barren run in the shortest format behind them. Barring a series win against Zimbabwe last year, the European country doesn't have much to show for in the shortest format in the last three years. Andrew Balbirnie, the skipper, will continue to be the mainstay of the batting unit. Ireland also need their veteran top-order bat Paul Stirling to get into his groove. Since scoring a hundred against Northants in the T20 Blast last month, Stirling has been in poor form.

Harry Tector has been a consistent performer for Ireland in ODIs and was in decent touch in the quadrangular T20I series in Oman this year. Gareth Delany and Curtis Campher bolster the side's depth with their all-round abilities. Among the seam bowlers, Mark Adair and Joshua Little can bowl with a decent burst of pace. Little also provides them with the left-arm option. Barry McCarthy has some experience of playing County cricket alongside internationals while Craig Young has been around in the international circuit for eight years. Andy McBrine and George Dockrell would have to shoulder the responsibilities of spin bowling.

When: Ireland vs India, 1st T20I, June 26, 4.30 PM local

Where: Village, Dublin

What to expect:The humidity is set to be on the higher side and there could be a passing rain shower or two through the course of the day. Usually a score of around 180-185 is a competitive total at the ground. The last time India played T20Is at this venue, they were able to notch up 200 plus score twice.

Team news:

India: Suryakumar is set to return to the Indian side. The visitors could also be tempted to give an opportunity for the uncapped speedster Umran or left-arm pace bowler Arshdeep.

Probable XI: Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson. Hardik Pandya (c), Dinesh Karthik, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan/Arshdeep Singh/Umran Malik, Yuzvendra Chahal

Ireland: Both all-rounders - Curtis Campher and Gareth Delany - are set to play. Barry McCarthy could edge out Craig Young for the third seamer's slot.

Probable XI: Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie (c), Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Curtis Campher, Andy McBrine, George Dockrell, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Joshua Little

What they said:

"Nowadays, any Indian team you play is going to be a good team. It kind of shows the depth of Indian cricket that they can put out two teams." - Andrew Balbirnie.

Ireland look to draw inspiration from Tector's enterprising fifty

June 27 2022
πŸ₯°πŸ˜β€οΈβ€οΈ
"He played some fantastic shots and obviously, he's 22, I've given him a bat as well, so maybe he can score some more sixes and maybe get an IPL contract, and I wish him luck," Hardik.

After the victory in the first T20I, India's captain Hardik Pandya had words of praise for the top scorer in the game, and the youngster who had done a rescue act for Ireland - Harry Tector.

"He played some fantastic shots and obviously, he's 22, I've given him a bat as well, so maybe he can score some more sixes and maybe get an IPL contract, and I wish him luck.

"Just look after him well, give him the right guidance. It's not always about cricket; it's about understanding your whole lifestyle and what is at stake. If you can manage that, I'm sure he's going to be around - not just in IPL, in all the leagues in the world," said Pandya.

The actions were, once again, revealing for the kind of approach the two teams have during the short, two-game series. For Ireland, it presents the best chance to grab eyeballs and make a statement for their cricket, both as a team and at an individual level. There is promise of greater reward if they can perform when millions of eyeballs are tuned into the game, just as Tector managed to do in the first T20I with his 33-ball 64.

For India, as Hardik had mentioned, the T20Is offer a chance for personnel to make/enhance their cases for a spot in the World Cup squad. As a result, the ones who did not get a chance in the first T20I could see an opportunity come their way even as there are concerns about Ruturaj Gaikwad's niggle from the first game.

When: Tuesday, June 28, 15:30 GMT, 21:00 IST

Where: The Village, Dublin

Teams

India

While they're assured of not losing the series, India would be walking a tight rope between treating the game as an opportunity to provide game time and going with their best eleven.

Squad: Ruturaj Gaikwad/Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umran Malik, Harshal Patel, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi

Ireland

Having already shown that they can fight back from tight spots in the first T20I, Ireland have shown promise with the bat, and would be targeting an improvement on the bowling front as well.

Squad: Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie (c), Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), George Dockrell, Mark Adair, Andy McBrine, Craig Young, Joshua Little, Conor Olphert, Curtis Campher, Barry McCarthy, Stephen Doheny

What they said:

When you play for India for the first time, and the journey he has taken, it's important to give such a bowler and such a talent time. Whether it was a good day or a bad day is irrelevant. For him, just to play for India is itself a very big thing, and that is something which I'm very happy for: Hardik Pandya on Umran Malik's debut
