Lancashire seal semifinal spot with comfortable win

Steven Croft and Dane Vilas led the chase with fifties

Lancashire overcame Essex by 7 wickets in the third quarterfinal to book their spot in the first semifinal with Yorkshire. It's the ninth Finals Day berth that Lancashire have managed to seal, after chasing down the required 162 runs in just 15.4 overs.

Steven Croft's unbeaten 76 and skipper Dane Vilas's 23-ball 51 were instrumental in the chase. After losing Keaton Jennings for a duck, opener Philip Salt got together with Croft for an enterprising 73-run stand in less than eight overs. Salt fell after a relay catch, but Vilas joined hands with Croft for a 78-run stand which essentially sealed the game for Lancashire as Essex's bowlers were out of answers.

Earlier, Essex had 53 runs on the board at the end of the Powerplay. The runs continued to flow in at a steady pace, with them finishing just over 160 with contributions through the line-up. Michael Pepper top-scored with 36, but it was a sedate innings that came in 34 balls. Paul Walter too chipped in with an unbeaten 34, but it was Daniel Sams's late blows for two sixes that gave them the late flourish. Even then, it wasn't enough for Lancashire's batsmen who were on top of their game on Friday (July 8).

Brief scores: Essex 161/5 in 20 overs (Adam Rossington 25, Michael Pepper 36, Paul Walter 34*; Luke Wood 2-28) lost to Lancashire 162/3 in 15.4 overs (Philip Salt 27, Steven Croft 76*, Dane Vilas 51) by 7 wickets.

Rossouw, Banton lead Somerset to record win

Rossouw's 36-ball 93 powered Somerset to 265
Somerset sealed their spot in the semifinals with a record win after overcoming Derbyshire by a whopping 191 runs. Somerset notched up the highest score in the competition's history with 265 and the 191-run win was the biggest victory margin too.

Rilee Rossouw came out all guns blazing, powering through a 36-ball 93. Together with Tom Banton, who played second fiddle to Rossouw while scoring his own fifty (73 pff 41), the pair piled on the runs in a 102-run stand that came in quick time. Rossouw couldn't get his century, but his knock was as destructive as they come, studded with seven sixes and eight fours, while Banton had six sixes and four boundaries.

The actual impetus though came off the bat of Tom Lammonby, who with three sixes and as many fours for a 9-ball 31 late in the innings, helped Somerset finish with 265 on the board. While George Scrimshaw was the pick of the bowlers, conceding just 16 in his four, the others leaked runs; Mattie McKiernan went for 82 off four overs.

Derbyshire's chase fell apart very early when they lost Harry Came in the opening over. Regular wickets thereafter and slipping to 43/5 in the seventh over in a huge chase didn't help. Little resistance came thereafter as they were bowled out for just 74 in 11.2 overs. Peter Siddle returned 3-10, while Ben Green had 3-17 with Somerset cruising to the semifinal where they will take on Hampshire.

Hampshire pipped Lancashire in thriller for third Blast title

July 17 2022 by Cricbuzz

Earlier on the Finals day, led by Tom Prest's 46-ball 64 and Ellis's 3-30, Hampshire had secured a comfortable 37-run win over Somerset.
Earlier on the Finals day, led by Tom Prest's 46-ball 64 and Ellis's 3-30, Hampshire had secured a comfortable 37-run win over Somerset.
Last ball. 5 runs needed. Stumps shattered. Fireworks. Hampshire go on a victory run. Players celebrate. Umpires call for a no-ball. The celebrations were delayed for Hampshire, but not denied. Eventually defending three runs off the last ball, Richard Gleeson missed connecting a swing off a slower ball from Nathan Ellis, and could only take a run off a bye as Hampshire secured a thrilling one-run win in the final of the T20 Blast on Saturday evening at Edgbaston.

Earlier on the Finals day, led by Tom Prest's 46-ball 64 and Ellis's 3 for 30, Hampshire had secured a comfortable 37-run win over Somerset, soon after quickfire half-centuries from Keaton Jennings and Dane Vilasagainst Yorkshire had already secured a Lancashire's passage to the final.

In the final contest, Hampshire elected to bat, and were dented early, losing captain James Vince and the in-form Prest by the third over. However, Ben McDermott's early assault hadn't allowed Lancashire to take control. The Australian batter hammered four boundaries and as many sixes en route his 36-ball 62, which included a 21-run 11th over, in which he carted Luke Wells for two sixes and a four.

However, there wasn't ample support from the other end as the other batters neither managed to find pace nor runs as easily. Barring Wells, who bowled only that one over, none of the other bowlers conceded more than seven an over, restricting Hampshire to 152 for 8. Matt Parkinson returned the most impressive figures of 4 for 26

In response, Lancashire got off to a far more entertaining start with Philip Salt pulling Chris Wood for a boundary off the first ball and then following up by swinging the next one for a six over backward of square off a free hit. Wood eventually had the better of him by getting him caught, miscuing a pull, off the third ball.

Even though Steven Croft began his innings by carting Brad Wheal for four successive boundaries in the fourth over, in the company of Jennings, they put on a more sedate with their approach but one that solidified Lancashire's innings as they approached a middling target. The duo combined to add 60 runs in 43 balls before both were dismissed in a space of seven balls.

Even at that point, Vilas and Wells didn't allow the innings to slip away. They combined to add 27 runs but the required rate was slowly starting to mount.

Once the duo fell, and a flurry of wickets continued, including two run-outs - Lancashire's innings started to fall apart. The lower order struggled to keep up with the required pace. Wells swung twice in the penultimate over with good results, fetching a boundary and a six but departed off the last ball, leaving Lancashire needing 11 off the last over.

Ellis tricked the lower order bats with his change of pace, and held his nerves to their third T20 Blast win.

Brief Scores: Hampshire 152/8 in 20 overs (Ben McDermott 62, Ross Whiteley 22; Matt Parkinson 4-26, Luke Wood 2-26) beat Lancashire 151/8 in 20 overs (Steven Croft 36, Luke Wells 27; James Fuller 2-19, Liam Dawson 2-23)
