Game # 56
KKR vs MI :saurabh: :saurabh: :saurabh:

πŸ₯΅Except in the opening game, KKR openers havent survived the powerplay. In fact, they are the only team to not have a half-century stand for the opening wicket this season.

πŸ₯΅With 328 runs, Tilak Varma is Mumbai Indian's leading run-getter of the season so far. Among uncapped players, only Abhishek Sharma has scored more runs this season than him.

πŸ₯΅In a season where things turned from bad to worse, death bowling is one area where KKR seamers have improved marginally, bringing their average down from 19.8 to 7.7 and the economy rate from 13.94 to 10.56 in the last five games compared to the first six.

Pace-setters Titans and Super Giants tussle for top spot in clash of the IPL newbies

PREVIEW
Pace-setters Titans and Super Giants tussle for top spot in clash of the IPL newbies
Super Giants are coming off four wins on the trot, while Titans' momentum was hampered with two straight losses

Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya and KL Rahul embrace β€’ Ron Gaunt / BCCI

Big Picture😘😘😘πŸ₯°

Eleven matches. Eight wins. Three losses. The two IPL newbies - Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans - are only separated by net run-rate on top of the points table, and a win on Tuesday will propel one of them to 18 points and help cement their playoffs spot.

While Super Giants are coming off four wins on the trot, Titans suffered consecutive defeats against lowly-placed Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. Having lost the match against Mumbai by a small margin, there were a few positives for Hardik Pandya's men, with Shubman Gill and the captain back among runs after failures in the recent games. A stable batter at No. 3 is still a concern for them, but thanks to match-winners like David Miller, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan, Titans have managed to stay ahead in the playoffs race.

Having played many games where the results could have gone either way, a third loss in a row might start to affect Titans' confidence and their aim of a top-two finish in the group stage. With Wriddhiman Saha providing them with quick starts, Titans will want to seek consistency from Gill and Hardik.

LIVE in the USA
You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

Super Giants, on the other hand, will be brimming with confidence after crushing Kolkata Knight Riders with an all-round performance in the previous game. The addition of Mohsin Khan has only strengthened their bowling attack that comprises the likes of Avesh Khan, Dushmantha Chameera and Jason Holder. In Ravi Bishnoi and Krunal Pandya, they have reliable wicket-taking spin options.

Their batting has primarily been taken care of by KL Rahul - who is also the leading run-getter for them with 451 runs at a strike rate of 145.01 - and Quinton de Kock at the top with Deepak Hooda now back to No.3 after they dropped a struggling Manish Pandey at one-down. A top-heavy batting has covered up for their underperforming middle order and this might be the one area that Titans would aim to exploit.

In the news

Avesh Khan will be back in the XI after missing a few games due to a "small injury". Both teams are unlikely to change their playing XIs.

Likely XIs

Lucknow Super Giants : 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 KL Rahul (capt), 3 Deepak Hooda, 4 Marcus Stoinis, 5 Krunal Pandya, 6 Ayush Badoni, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Avesh Khan/K Gowtham, 9 Mohsin Khan, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Ravi Bishnoi

Gujarat Titans : 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 B Sai Sudharsan, 4 Hardik Pandya (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Pradeep Sangwan

Strategy Punt

Mohammed Shami will be key to Titan's bowling plans as he has dismissed Rahul twice in three T20s. The fast bowler has also removed Quinton de Kock three times with the batter averaging just 14 against him.

Stats that matter

Saha has an average of 51.7 against pacers this season.

Lockie Ferguson's economy has jumped to 10 in the last six matches, after having conceded 7.7 runs an over in the first five matches.

Chameera is two short of completing 100 wickets in T20s.

Inconsistent Capitals look to climb table against weakened Royals
Both sides are top-heavy and Hetmyer's absence will test Royals' batting depth

Pravin Amre walked onto the field to speak to the umpires after the no-ball incident, Delhi Capitals vs Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2022, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, April 22, 2022
Things got heated the last time these two teams met in the IPL β€’ BCCI

Big picture

Delhi Capitals' campaign has been beset by setbacks on and off the field. In the lead-up to their crucial game against Chennai Super Kings, another fresh Covid-positive case emerged from Capitals' camp, which shook up their plans so much that one of their assistant coaches James Hopes revealed to host broadcaster Star Sports that they didn't have their team meeting until they got together at the venue.

Capitals suffered a 91-run drubbing at the hands of Super Kings, but despite that, they are the only team apart from Super Kings to have a positive net run rate in the bottom six of the points table. They can potentially stay in control of their own fate should they win their last three games and, in that scenario, their superior net run rate could give them an edge over their closest rivals - Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.l

Rajasthan Royals are better-placed in the dash to the playoffs, but they will now have to rejig their XI in the absence of their designated finisher Shimron Hetmyer who has flown back home to Guyana for the birth of his child. Jimmy Neesham and Rassie van der Dussen are among the options to replace Hetmyer, whose unavailability will test the batting depth of Royals who previously had R Ashwin at No. 7.

Like Royals, Capitals are a top-heavy line-up that appears light at the back end, more so when Rovman Powell has an off day. Sure, Powell has raised his game against spin after working with Robert Samuels, the elder brother of Marlon, but it will be a big task against Royals' gun spinners - Yuzvendra Chahal and Ashwin.

In the news

Prithvi Shaw, who had missed Capitals' last two games, recently posted on social media that he was recovering from fever in a hospital. It remains to be seen whether he has recovered sufficiently to return to action.

Likely XIs

Delhi Capitals: 1 David Warner, 2 KS Bharat/Prithvi Shaw, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 5 Rovman Powell, 6 Ripal Patel/Lalit Yadav, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Khaleel Ahmed

Rajasthan Royals: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Jos Buttler, 3 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 4 Devdutt Padikkal, 5 Riyan Parag, 6 Jimmy Neesham/Rassie van der Dussen/Daryl Mitchell, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Trent Boult, 9 Prasidh Krishna, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Kuldeep Sen

Strategy punt

Whether Devdutt Padikkal bats at the top or middle, unleash Anrich Nortje on him. The fast bowler has snagged him twice in three innings while giving up 12 off eight balls.

Stats that matter

😍Prasidh Krishna has a good head-to-head record against David Warner in the IPL: two strikes in three innings while conceding 28 runs off 21 balls.

🀣Jos Buttler has taken Kuldeep Yadav for 54 off 33 balls at a strike rate of 163.63 while being dismissed just once in the IPL.

πŸ₯°Royals have struck 102 sixes, the most by a team this IPL, to Capitals' 81. In fact, Royals are the only team to have hit more than 100 sixes so far this season.

πŸ‘ŒNo spin attack has more wickets than Royals' 32 this season. Those wickets have come at an excellent average of 20.91 and economy rate of 7.71.

😍Warner (163.28) and Shaw (159.50) have the best strike rates among batters who have faced a minimum of 50 balls in the powerplay this season.

❀️Axar Patel is one strike away from 100 IPL wickets.

Game # 59

MI vs CSK
:dance2:

Below stats from Cricbuzz

πŸ‘ŒMS Dhoni has scored 710 runs at a strike rate of 130.8 against MI in the tournament

πŸ‘Œ- Rohit Sharma has near-identical numbers against CSK - 752 runs at a strike rate of 125.3, including seven half-centuries

PREVIEW

Pride for Mumbai, last-gasp effort for CSK as old rivals come together again
Super Kings will be without Ravindra Jadeja, who was been ruled out of the tournament with a bruised rib

Should Mumbai Indians give Jasprit Bumrah the new ball?

Big picture

At the start of IPL 2022, not many would have expected Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to be lurking at the bottom of the points table for most of the season. But that's how it has turned out to be. Five-time champions Mumbai are out of the race for the playoffs, while defending champions Super Kings are hanging by the thinnest of the threads.

On Thursday, Super Kings might have a slight advantage, though. They are coming off what their captain MS Dhoni called "a perfect game", while Mumbai would be smarting from a 52-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders despite Jasprit Bumrah's five-for.

But Super Kings are not too worried about if and how they can qualify for the playoffs. In fact, they seem to have already started planning for the next year.

In Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, they have figured out their opening pair. The two have put together one half-century and two century stands in just four innings. In the bowling department, Mukesh Choudhary seems to have turned the page after a poor start to the season.

Mumbai, too, can follow that path and try out uncapped South African Tristan Stubbs. He could replace Ramandeep Singh, with Basil Thampi coming in for Riley Meredith to keep the overseas players' count to four. Or, Stubbs can replace an out-of-form Kieron Pollard in a direct swap, but that will leave Rohit Sharma with just five bowling options. And if there is a match Mumbai want Pollard the bowler for, it's this one. (See "Strategy punts

In the news

A bruised rib has cut short Ravindra Jadeja's IPL 2022. He picked up the injury while fielding against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai's most successful batter this season, too has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a forearm injury he suffered during the match against Gujarat Titans.

MS Dhoni has a chat with Mukesh Choudhary, Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2022, DY Patil, Navi Mumbai, May 8, 2022
Chennai Super Kings seem to have already started planning for the next yearβ€’BCCI
Likely XIs

Chennai Super Kings 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Robin Uthappa, 5 Shivam Dube, 6 Ambati Rayudu, 7 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Simarjeet Singh, 10 Maheesh Theekshana, 11 Mukesh Choudhary

Mumbai Indians 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Tristan Stubbs/Ramandeep Singh, 5 Tim David, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Daniel Sams, 8 Hrithik Shokeen, 9 Kumar Kartikeya, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Basil Thampi/Riley Meredith

Strategy punts

So far this season Shivam Dube has scored 279 runs in nine innings, at an average of 34.87 and a strike rate of 160.34. But Mumbai could bring on Bumrah against him. Bumrah has got Dube out twice in 17 balls while giving away only ten runs.
Super Kings have three left-handers in their top six. Mumbai can counter that by bringing in offspinner Hrithik Shokeen for legspinner M Ashwin.
Pollard has had an underwhelming season with the bat but against Super Kings, he could be handy with the ball. He has dismissed Conway three times in 17 balls for just 17 runs. He has been successful against Robin Uthappa too, with three dismissals in 32 balls for 42 runs. Against Moeen Ali, it's two dismissals in 25 balls for 25 runs. So Mumbai may use his bowling skills more than they usually do.

Stats that matter

πŸ₯°In IPL 2022, Pollard has scored only 144 runs in 11 innings at an average of 14.40 and a strike rate of 107.46. Among those who have faced a minimum of 100 balls,

πŸ₯°only Kane Williamson (96.13) and Ajinkya Rahane (100.96) have a lower strike rate. His numbers against spin are even worse: five dismissals at an average of 6.80 and a strike rate of 82.92.

πŸ‘ŒRohit, too, has struggled against spin this season, scoring only 33 runs off 32 balls while being dismissed four times.
Bumrah has contrasting numbers against Gaikwad and Dhoni. Gaikwad has taken him for 21 runs off ten balls without getting out, while Dhoni has scored only 60 runs off 60 balls against him with three dismissals.

Game 60
RCB vs PK

PREVIEW

Royal Challengers better placed in race to playoffs; teetering Kings search for balance

Royal Challengers are coming off two successive wins while Kings were drubbed in their last outing

πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ˜πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅

Big picture

It's not just cricket anymore. It's mathematics.

At the core of it all, the equation for Punjab Kings is pretty simple - they need to win their remaining games to stay in with a chance of making the playoffs. As for Royal Challengers Bangalore, they are already in the top four with 14 points, but their poor net run rate leaves them with less room to work with. They still need two wins to be assured of qualification.

Watch live in the USA
You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

In the IPL, Royal Challengers' captain Faf du Plessis has not scored more runs against any other team than Punjab Kings; he has 702 runs in 13 innings against Kings and the next best is his 432 in 14 innings against Kolkata Knight Riders. True to the numbers, du Plessis hit a stroke-filled 88 against Kings earlier this season. As the season has progressed, Royal Challengers have fitted their jigsaw puzzle better.

In their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, four of the top five batters scored 30 or more while their bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood, put on a clinical show. One of the key players in the past few games, the usual suspects aside, has been Rajat Patidar, who was brought in belatedly as a replacement player.

Patidar is fourth among the Royal Challengers players in terms of player rating score as per ESPNcricinfo's MVP ratings, among those who have played a minimum of four matches this season, after Glenn Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga and Hazlewood. In fact, Patidar's batting impact score of 39.75 is the best for his side - tenth overall, closely followed by Dinesh Karthik's 34.96.

Their opponents, Kings, are yet again hovering in the lower half of the table after having a strong start. They are returning after a five-day break, having lost against Rajasthan Royals in their last outing. Jonny Bairstow's promotion to the top of the order seems to have done him good and with Jitesh Sharma finding his feet lower down, Kings would be confident of putting up a good show, irrespective of whether they are batting first or chasing.

However, with an economy rate of 8.65 this season, Punjab Kings have been the second-most expensive bowling side behind Mumbai Indians and how they use Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh, two of their key bowlers, could well dictate how the contest flows.

Likely XIs

Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Faf du Plessis (capt), 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Rajat Patidar, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Shahbaz Ahmed, 6 Mahipal Lomror, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Josh Hazlewood

Punjab Kings: 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 4 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Rishi Dhawan, 8 Rahul Chahar, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Sandeep Sharma

Strategy punt

Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli have fallen to Sandeep Sharma a combined nine times and to Kagiso Rabada on six occasions in T20 cricket. That could perhaps be best new-ball combination for Kings.

Both Shikhar Dhawan and Bairstow have been quiet against Wanindu Hasaranga, having a strike rate of 85 and 67 respectively in T20 cricket. With Liam Livingstone and Bhanuka Rajapaksa having superior strike rates against the legspinner, there could be a case for Royal Challengers to open the bowling with Hasaranga and Josh Hazlewood.

Stats that matter

❀️Twenty-seven sixes were hit in the Royal Challengers-Kings game earlier this season - the most in a game in IPL 2022.

❀️Arshdeep has given away just five sixes off the 38 overs he has bowled this season, the least for a bowler with a minimum of 35 overs.

❀️Kohli has been dismissed in the first 15 balls on eight occasions in IPL 2022, the most by a batter batting in the top six.

πŸ₯°Rabada's 18 wickets are the most by a pacer in IPL 2022
