Punjab vs Rajasthan
Game # 52 at 3.30 pm today on Saturday

PREVIEW

Kings, Royals need fresh spark to revive playoff fortunes

Chahal's form has dipped slightly, Agarwal doesn't have the runs - which side's senior members will stand up?

How do Punjab Kings get the best out of Rahul Chahar?

Big picture

Two sides who are beginning to forget the art of winning face off in a fixture that has big implications. Three losses in their last five games has left Punjab Kings playing catch up in the race for the playoffs. Rajasthan Royals, too, seem to be slipping just as the teams below them are making their charge. Both teams need a win. Anything less and their lives could get a bit tricky.

Watch live in the USA
You can watch the match live on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

Mayank Agarwal is due for a big score, but he pushed himself down the order in their last game allowing Jonny Bairstow to open alongside Shikhar Dhawan. Is that the plan now? With overseas batters Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Liam Livingstone in good touch, what Kings need is for their lower-middle order of Indians - that might just also include Agarwal - to come good. If they hold up their end of the bargain, there's enough skill between Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh and others to realistically trouble Royals through the 20 overs.

As for Royals, their inability to go past 160 in their losses against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders will be concerning. So too Yuzvendra Chahal's recent lack of wickets. IPL 2022's purple-cap holder has struck just twice in four games. What they need to overcome the Kings challenge is wickets in the powerplay from Trent Boult and Prasidh Krishna. That will then set the spinners up and re-establish what some have been saying all through the IPL: Royals have the most well-rounded bowling attack this season.

Likely XIs

Punjab Kings: 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 4 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Rishi Dhawan, 8 Rahul Chahar, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Sandeep Sharma

Rajasthan Royals: 1 Jos Buttler, 2 Devdutt Padikkal, 3 Sanju Samson (capt, wk), 4 Karun Nair / Yashasvi Jaiswal, 5 Riyan Parag, 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Trent Boult, 9 Prasidh Krishna, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Kuldeep Sen

Devdutt Padikkal has had a slight dip in form over the last couple of matches•BCCI
Strategy punt

Do Royals move away from Devdutt Padikkal and go back to Yashasvi Jaiswal? Padikkal had 12 dots in his 15-ball innings against Mumbai and was out for a boundary-less five-ball knock against KKR. In the game before that, he suffered six dots in a seven-ball innings against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Those three scores have corresponded with the otherwise high-scoring Royals making only 144, 158 and 152 in their last three games. Jaiswal was dropped after a poor run - 20, 1 and 4 - early in the season. He must be itching to get back and prove his worth.

Stats that matter

#Sides batting first have won two of the last five games at the Wankhede. The last afternoon game here was won by the side batting first too.

😃With a game in hand, Rabada is two wickets shy of purple-cap holder Chahal's tally of 19.

❤️Buttler - the orange cap holder - is 385 runs away from beating Virat Kohli's record-setting 973-run season in IPL 2016. He has also hit the most sixes (25) at the Wankhede since IPL 2019.

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/ind ... ch-preview

Below more stats from Cricbuzz

😃Between them, Punjab & Rajasthan have won only three tosses in 20 games in IPL 2022.

😃Livingstone is second in the list of SR this season sitting just a few paces below that of topper Dinesh Karthik (100+ balls).

😃Trent Boult has the worst economy rate in death overs in 2022 (minimum eight overs). He has leaked at 13.62 an over.

🔥Rabada is seven away from the 100-wicket milestone and has picked four wickets apiece in each of the last two matches.

Lucknow vs KKR
Game 53 at 7.30 pm

LSG vs KKR

PREVIEW
Lucknow Super Giants aim to shore up playoff chances against struggling KKR
One win will put Super Giants within touching distance of the playoffs, while a defeat for KKR will all but eliminate them

Do Lucknow Super Giants have the most balanced XI in IPL 2022?

Big picture

Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders are two teams on opposite ends of the points table. Super Giants are currently second with 14 points from ten games. One more win and they will be within touching distance of the playoffs.

Knight Riders are placed eighth with four wins from ten games. If they lose on Saturday, they will be all but out of the race.

Watch live in the USA
You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

In Super Giants' last two games, they replaced a struggling Manish Pandey with a bowler. That gave Deepak Hooda a chance to bat at No. 3, where he notched up scores of 34 off 28 and 52 off 34.

But with their middle order still underperforming, playing one batter fewer could also backfire, as it almost did against Punjab Kings before Dushmantha Chameera and Mohsin Khan rescued them with some lusty blows towards the end.

Their bowling attack, though, is without any holes. They have the pace of Chameera, the left-arm angle of Mohsin, and the death-bowling skills of Avesh Khan and Jason Holder. When it comes to spin, Ravi Bishnoi's fast legbreaks, sliders and googlies are there, as is an upgraded version of Krunal Pandya's left-arm spin. While their batting has largely revolved around KL Rahul, six of their bowlers have picked up eight or more wickets in the tournament.

Knight Riders put an end to their five-match losing streak with a seven-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals, but there is no end to their problems. Their openers haven't fired. Their bowlers, with the exception of Sunil Narine, have had mixed returns. They have even dropped two of their retained players, Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy.

However, if their bowlers can dismiss Rahul and Quinton de Kock early, they can surprise Super Giants, as a lot of other match-ups are in their favour.

In the news

Avesh didn't play Super Giants' last match as he had just recovered from a "small injury" and the franchise didn't want him to play back-to-back games. But after a further gap of six days, he should be back in the XI on Saturday. If so, K Gowtham will have to miss out.

Deepak Hooda and KL Rahul punch gloves in a crucial partnership, Delhi Capitals vs Lucknow Super Giants, IPL 2022, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, May 1, 2022
Deepak Hooda and KL Rahul have given Lucknow Super Giants stability at the top•BCCI
Likely XIs

Lucknow Super Giants: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 KL Rahul (capt), 3 Deepak Hooda, 4 Marcus Stoinis, 5 Krunal Pandya, 6 Ayush Badoni, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Avesh Khan/K Gowtham, 9 Mohsin Khan, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Ravi Bishnoi

Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 B Indrajith (wk), 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Anukul Roy, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Shivam Mavi

Strategy punts

#Knight Riders can bowl Narine and Andre Russell in tandem against Super Giants' middle order. Narine has dismissed Hooda twice in 20 balls while giving away only 19 runs. He has also troubled Marcus Stoinis (23 balls, 21 runs, one dismissal) and k.Pandya (24 balls, 25 runs, two dismissals). All combined, it's 65 runs off 67 balls for five dismissals against those three batters.

The real bogeyman for Stoinis, though, has been Russell. He has got Stoinis out three times in 19 balls while conceding only 12 runs. Jason Holder too has struggled against him, getting out four times in 18 balls for 21 runs.

For Hooda, it's one dismissal in ten balls for just four runs. The only Super Giants middle-order batter with a favourable match-up against Russell is Pandya, who has hit him for 32 runs off 22 balls for one dismissal.

So far in IPL 2022, Holder has bowled across all three phases of the innings but against Knight Riders, Super Giants should avoid bowling him when Russell is out in the middle, as Russell has taken him for 😭42 runs off 24 balls for just one dismissal.

Stats that matter

😃In each of the ten games in Pune, captains have opted to bowl after winning the toss. However, their teams won only three of those games.

❤️Among those who have bowled at least ten overs in the middle phase this season, Narine (5.00) has the best economy rate. Pandya is second on that list with 5.95.

❤️Rahul has taken Narine for 131 runs off 72 balls (strike rate 181.94) for two dismissals.

#So far, Knight Riders have tried five opening pairs, the most by any team in the competition, and their average opening stand of 14.40 is the worst in the tournament.

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/ind ... ch-preview

More stat from Cricbuzz below

Did You Know:

- ❤️Rahul is 49 runs away from getting 500 runs for the fifth consecutive season

- 😭KKR are the only side yet to register a 50-plus opening stand

Super Sunday 3.30 pm
Game #54

:saurabh: :saurabh:

Can RCB make a statement in playoff bid?

May 07 2022

The last time they met SRH, which was two weeks ago, RCB were bowled out for a paltry 68
The last time they met SRH, which was two weeks ago, RCB were bowled out for a paltry 68
They say revenge isn't a word that is to be used in sport. But in one way or the other, that's exactly what the Royal Challengers Bangalore will be gunning for on Sunday (May 8). The last time they met Sunrisers Hyderabad, which was two weeks ago, they were bowled out for a paltry 68 in an innings that didn't even last 100 deliveries. That was one morale-sapping performance indeed as they went on to lose their next two games also to leave them vulnerable at the business end of the tournament. But a victory in their previous game against Chennai Super Kings has ensured that their hopes of finishing in the top 4 are still in their control.

For that to remain in their control, they will have to make a statement. And there is no better way than turning the tables against a side that handed them a humiliating loss last time. The timing seems to be ideal as well considering SRH are appearing jittery at the moment. It's been a unique season for them. They started off with two losses before registering five wins on the trot. And now, they have lost their last three games. There is no middle ground, either they win a few or lose a few at a stretch. But in order to keep their own hopes alive, that rut has to stop now. SRH need their skipper Kane Williamson to badly step up. Williamson has looked well below par this season and time is certainly running out.

Aiden Markram has been consistent and the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi have chipped in with vital contributions. But SRH need Washington Sundar. He has been in and out of the side as a result of injuries and his absence indeed leaves a big hole. As far as RCB are concerned, they would like some runs from Glenn Maxwell. One of their best players last season, Maxwell is averaging just 22 with the bat this time around. If he can click, providing support to the likes of Shahbaz Ahmed, Mahipal Lomror and Dinesh Karthik, RCB will find themselves in a much better position.

When:Sunday, May 8, 2022 at 15:30 IST

Where: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

What to expect:With the pitches tending to get slower as the tournament progresses, expect moderate scores at this venue. Considering this is also a day game, slow bowlers from both sides will prove to be handy.

Head to head:SRH 12 - 8 RCB

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Tactics and matchups:Virat Kohli has a modest record against Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Considering he is opening in the last few games, that is one battle to watch out for. SRH will also be tempted to save Bhuvneshwar for Maxwell considering he has a SR of 84 against the medium pacer. There is a case to bring back Marco Jansen considering his three-wicket over derailed the same opponent two weeks ago.

Probable XI:Kane Williamson (C), Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Shashank Singh, Washinigton Sundar/Shreyas Gopal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen/Sean Abbott, Umran Malik, T Natarajan

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Tactics and matchups:Well, SRH may have bowled them out for just 68 recently but RCB can take hope from the fact that this bowling attack has conceded scores of 199, 202 and 207 in the last three games There's no reason to be cautious against the impressive Umran Malik considering he has conceded 100 in his last two games. A battle at the death between the young speedster and Dinesh Karthik could be a fascinating watch. While Markram has been impressive in his middle order role, a contest against Hasaranga in a day game could turn out to be a different challenge altogether.

Probable XI:Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (C), Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Shahbaz Ahmed, Dinesh Karthik (WK), Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Josh Hazlewood, Mohammad Siraj

Did you know?

After scoring 171 runs in the first five games, Tripathi has slowed down in the next five, making only 79 runs.

Since IPL 2018, Williamson averages just 23.60 as an opener whereas that almost doubles up to 45.48.

With 38 wickets, RCB are easily the best bowling side in the middle overs.

https://m.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/122 ... 22-preview

More from Cricbuzz

😃Josh Hazlewood needs to strike thrice to tally 100 wickets in T20s
Since 2020, Sunrisers have won four of their six games against Royal Challengers

😃Mohammed Siraj needs to strike two more times to tally 50 wickets for Royal Challengers in the IPL

Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals
at Mumbai

55th Match, Indian Premier League 2022

Sunday at 7.30 pm
2nd game of the day

Stats from cricbuzz below

🤣Rovman Powell has hit 16 sixes in his last four games, no one else has hit more in this period.

- 😍Rishabh Pant averages 50.50 at a strike rate of 154 against CSK

CSK vs DC
❤️

PREVIEW

Shaw ruled out as Capitals seek valuable points in playoffs race

Super Kings are mathematically still in the mix to make the top four, but only just

Should CSK look to test their bench strength?

Big picture

Despite the unavailability of key players at various points and a trial by Covid-19, Delhi Capitals are finding a way to stay in the playoff hunt. Their net run-rate of +0.641 is the best among all ten teams, which suggests their five losses have been close affairs. Their opponents Chennai Super Kings have also had to deal with the absence of key players, chiefly Deepak Chahar, but they haven't been able to cope as well.

MS Dhoni himself said that Super Kings' young, inexperienced bowlers are still learning on the job and hence need fine-tuning. Mukesh Choudhary, Simarjeet Singh, Dwaine Pretorius, and Maheesh Theekshana are all playing their first (full) IPL seasons. Dwayne Bravo's recent injury has applied greater pressure on the attack although Theekshana filled in admirably for Bravo with a three-wicket penultimate over against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Super Kings have issues on the batting front, too, although Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad briefly tore open a portal to the Mike Hussey-M Vijay union, in the last couple of games. Jadeja's batting strike rate of 118.36 is his lowest since IPL 2015 and overall, the middle order has fired in only fits and starts.

Capitals' middle order, though, looks in much healthier shape, especially with Rovman Powell clicking into top gear after a slow start to the season. However, if Super Kings manage to make early inroads, they can test the batting depth of Capitals who have Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel/Ripal Patel and Shardul Thakur carded at Nos. 6,7 and 8.

LIVE in the USA
Watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

In the news

Prithvi Shaw will miss the match, having been ruled out with an illness that led him to be hospitalised. It remains to be seen whether Axar Patel and Bravo have recovered from their respective injuries.

Likely XIs

Chennai Super Kings: 1 Devon Conway, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Ambati Rayudu, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (capt&wk), 8 Dwayne Bravo/Dwaine Pretorius, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Simarjeet Singh, 11 Mukesh Choudhary

Delhi Capitals: 1 David Warner, 2 Mandeep Singh, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt&wk), 5 Rovman Powell, 6 Lalit Yadav, 7 Axar Patel/Ripal Patel, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Khaleel Ahmed

Strategy punt

How about matching up Kuldeep Yadav with Ambati Rayudu? The left-arm wristspinner has removed Rayudu twice in five IPL innings while keeping him to a run-a-ball 24. Rayudu, however, has been strong against wristspinners this IPL, taking 53 runs from 36 balls off them while being dismissed just once.

Stats that matter

❤️pCapitals' powerplay run rate of 9.41 is the best among all sides this IPL. As for Super Kings, they have the third-worst run rate (6.98) in the first six overs.

❤️Bravo has limited Powell to 31 off 34 balls while dismissing him once in seven CPL innings.

❤️Dhoni has struggled against wristspinners in the recent past, but he has a favourable head-to-head record against Kuldeep in the IPL: 46 off 28 balls at a strike rate of almost 165.

❤️This will be Thakur's first-ever IPL match against Super Kings. Before his stint with Super Kings, he had been part of Rising Pune Super Giants and Punjab franchises.

❤️Axar is one strike away from 100 IPL wickets. He will become the second left-arm spinner to the landmark after Jadeja.

🤣May 8, GMT 1140 The preview was updated with news that Shaw has been ruled out of the match.
