England all-rounder Moeen Ali: I was called Osama by Australia player

Postby bolero » Mon Sep 17, 2018 9:36 am

Cricket Australia have promised to launch an investigation into Moeen Ali’s allegation that he was called ‘Osama’ by an Australian player during the 2015 Ashes. In an excerpt of his autobiography published by The Times, Moeen says the abuse took place in the first Test of the series in Cardiff. Moeen, making his debut in the Ashes, scored 77 runs and took five wickets as England defeated Darren Lehmann’s Australia. ‘It was a great first Ashes Test in terms of my personal performance, however there was one incident which had distracted me,’ Moeen wrote.

‘An Australian player turned to me on the field and said, “Take that, Osama”. I could not believe what I had heard. I remember going really red. I have never been so angry on a cricket field. ‘I told a couple of the guys what the player had said to me and I think [England coach] Trevor Bayliss must have raised it with Darren Lehmann. ‘Lehmann asked the player, “Did you call Moeen Osama?” He denied it, saying, “No, I said, ‘Take that, you part-timer'”. ‘I must say I was amused when I heard that for there is a world of difference between the words “Osama” and “part-timer”.

‘Although I couldn’t have mistaken “part-timer” for “Osama”, obviously I had to take the player’s word for it, though for the rest of the match I was angry.’ Moeen, 31, recalled that following the series he spoke to the player accused of making the racial slur. ‘He came up to me and said, “I know what you thought I said, but I didn’t say that. I’ve got Muslim friends and some of my best friends are Muslims”,’ he added. ‘I did not argue with him. But I was so clear that is what he said. Why should I invent it out of the blue? I’ve got nothing against him.’

Following Moeen’s accusation, Cricket Australia released a statement saying they intend to look into the incident. ‘Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and have no place in our sport, or in society,’ a statement read. ‘We have a clear set of values and behaviours that comes with representing our country. ‘We take this matter very seriously, and are following up with the ECB as a matter of urgency to seek further clarification around the alleged incident.’

Funny to me. Because Osama is a controversy till now.

1. USA, EU and some Muslim says he is a terrorist.
2. Some Muslim says he is a Leader
3. Some Muslim says he is actually creation of USA (CIA)
etc . . . .

If someone call me like that, rather being offended, I will take it as a fun and try to reply him with something similar.

Has the Australian player come forward yet?

What's he hiding? :nana:

When an indian say “monkey” (allegedly) to an Australian on his onfield rude behavior there is no end to media circus & uproar.

if it’s an Australian who does the name calling shame, unprovoked, it’s pushed under carpet???
WTF.

To be fair, Moeen didn't want it pressed at the time.

lol@leo.

Moen at first thought it was a complement to be compared with the “great” osama. Now only he realized the “joke”. It takes time to understand that it’s not. May be he just got a publishing contract to write a book. hmmm.

Yes, all these controversial remarks are to sell the book.

Maybe it's true, but this should have been reported in the first place. Plain opportunism.

It was reported at the time between the coaches and alleged player who said Moeen mis-heard "part timer " with Osama.

And yet the player facing the allegations still hasn't stepped forward...

There's no need for any build up.
He is already No.1.

At least in my mind. :-)

it’s a contest for who got a longer ****

my **** is longer than your **** while we compare our **** sizes.

that begs for question of if you are representing a muslim country why don’t we see 11 beards?
imagine pakistan, bangladesh or Afghanistan teams playing each with 22 beards on field. no? why not?

so this beard bullshit is only done in non muslim teams ? WTF. That goes for saffers Imran Tahir & Hashim Amla etc.

When in Rome you do go as a Roman, or get the hell out of Italy, no beard BS. We don’t see lone christian or hindu in other teams doing similar religious BS.
- 2 cents.

Agreed. And this is a problem for England. Moeen may well do his best to climb up the batting order, but Woakes, Stokes, Curran and Buttler all want to do so too.

England are doing well with what they have. But they're missing some batting talent, spin talent, and genuine pace talent (for Australia tours).
