Luck of the Irish.

Postby baggygreenmania » Sat May 05, 2018 3:18 am

I am pleased that Ireland is finally a Test playing nation.. It has been a long time coming.

[i]Boyd Rankin, Ed Joyce and William Porterfield have all been included in Ireland's 14-man squad for their inaugural Test match against Pakistan in Dublin in a one-off contest at Malahide Cricket Club from May 11.

[b]Ireland squad: William Porterfield (captain), Andrew Balbirnie, Ed Joyce, Tyrone Kane, Andy McBrine, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O'Brien, Niall O'Brien, Boyd Rankin, Nathan Smith, Paul Stirling, James Shannon, Stuart Thompson, Gary Wilson.

Aussie -born tweaker Nathan Smith is the surprise spinner in the squad at the expense of their regular offie George Dockrell.

It is mostly the same old players still who peaked long ago. I hope they start developing some new talent soon.

I have far less expectations of Ireland than I do Afghanistan who already have 4 legitimate class players. Unfortunately for Afghanistan, only 1 is a batsman.

Seam bowlers around the world will be licking their lips to get into Irish batsmen on green wickets.
Law 31.6 - benefit of the doubt for an dismissal appeal goes to the batsman
A third umpire call for a run out or stumping is a referral, not a review.

So Boyd Rankin will have played for 2 Test teams - England and Ireland.
Now how many modern cricketers can say that?

The recent examples I remember are John Traicos and Kepler Wessels.

Did Luke Ronchi ever play a Test match for Australia?
