The SA Redbacks have named their list of contracted players for the 2017-18 season, with fast bowler Nick Winter handed a deal and rookies John Dalton and Harry Nielsen upgraded to full contracts. Notable ommissions are Tim Ludeman, Sam Raphael plus rookies Wes Agar and Alex Gregory.

Experienced batsman Tom Cooper, allrounder Cameron Valente and fast bowler David Grant have also retained their contracts after being upgraded during 2016-17 by playing enough one-day and first-class games.

Six new rookies have been named: fast bowler Spencer Johnson, legspinner Lloyd Pope, allrounder Daniel Drew, offspinner Michael Cormack, opening batsman Jake Winter and allrounder Ben Pengelley.

I have to question the dropping of Wes Agar and Alex Gregory. How many first class games did either have to try to impress. Gregory is a former national Under 19 captain.

South Australia Redbacks squad: Tom Andrews, Nick Benton, Alex Carey, Tom Cooper, John Dalton, Callum Ferguson, David Grant, Travis Head (CA), Jake Lehmann, Joe Mennie, Harry Nielsen, Patrick Page, Kane Richardson, Alex Ross, Chadd Sayers, Kelvin Smith, Cameron Valente, Jake Weatherald, Nick Winter, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa (CA). Rookies Michael Cormack, Daniel Drew, Spencer Johnson, Lloyd Pope, Ben Pengelley, Jake Winter.

Fast bowlers Charlie Stobo and Henry Thornton are the new additions to the New South Wales contract list for 2017-18 season. Missing out were Ben Rohrer and Josh Lalor while keeper-batsman Ryan Carters has retired.

Rohrer, a veteran batsman with 55 first-class games during a decade of service with the Blues, has taken up a position as Tasmania's new state talent manager, though he is expected to play for the Sydney Thunder this summer.

New South Wales squad Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger, Harry Conway, Trent Copeland, Ed Cowan, Pat Cummins ( CA), Ben Dwarshuis, Ryan Gibson, Josh Hazlewood (CA), Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Nick Larkin, Jay Lenton, Nathan Lyon (CA), Nic Maddinson, Arjun Nair, Peter Nevill, Steve O'Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Gurinder Sandhu, Steven Smith (CA), Will Somerville, Mitchell Starc (CA), Charlie Stobo, Henry Thornton, David Warner (CA). Rookies Mickey Edwards, Dan Fallins, Jordan Gauci, Liam Hatcher, Jason Sangha, Param Uppal.

Banglas won toss and are batting Mick. That should not worry our boys as Haz will enjoy bowling with some overcast. Could get some movement. Cummins just needs to tear in and try to knock off some heads.

Agar and Cummins showing more application than the batsmen on these big spinning decks. Agar nearing his 50.

Funny thing about Australia's batting in this test is that the 4 that showed the most application are the 4 youngest players in the side. I like what i see out of the Sub 25yo a lot more than i have for the last 10 years from the 25-35 yos. Renshaw, Agar & Handscomb have got a far better attitude than the likes of Warner, Khawaja and both Marsh's.

Totally agree there Mick. The older players have been pampered for too long. Those three, plus Hilton Cartwright will form the nucleus of our Test side with skipper Smithy for many years to come. Also like the attitude of Pat Cummins. Showed up some up some of our much vaunted batsmen. Agar looks the slow bowling all round player Australia has been crying out for.
