I assume in NZ the penalties are similarly in severity to the UK? Near-mandatory driving disqualification or two year driving ban and massive fine for first offence, sometimes a requirement to retake driving test

More lenient for the first offence not causing injury: not two years disqualification for the first offence. More like 6 months with a fine. That has become a standard sentence and is not necessarily the maximum possible which is possibly upto 3 months in prison as well as a big fine. This is not often imposed and I doubt even sought by the Crown.

First time drink driving not causing injury is more of a rubber stamp exercise at the penal stage to give the infringer a smack over the knuckles, to let them know how serious the offence is, but to warn them and be softer than the law permits with a comparatively modest fine to the harshest on the books and a mandatory minimum of a 6 month ban from driving. Many then seek work licenses which increase the amount of the fines paid as it were to much much larger sums for a far more restrictive driving license limited to regions and days and times.

But repeat offenders (3 or more times) stare down the barrel of longer incarceration as a sentence as do those that cause injury while drunk driving carelessly, as well as a longer disqualification period for more than a minimum of one year.

So repeat offenders and those that cause injury while driving drunk carelessly are treated very severely.

Don't drink and drive carelessly and injure someone in NZ; first offence or otherwise. Prison awaits you.

Sounds reasonably similar to the UK though the first offence driving ban lengths perhaps slightly shorter.

You missed the reference:

From wikipedia:

The Lucky Country is a 1964 book by Donald Horne. The title has become a nickname for Australia and is generally used favourably, although the origin of the phrase was negative. Among other things, it has been used in reference to Australia's natural resources, weather, history, distance from problems elsewhere in the world, and other sorts of prosperity.

Horne's intent in writing the book was to document Australia's climb to power and wealth, basing it almost entirely on luck rather than the strength of its political or economic system, which Horne believed was "second rate".

No I didnt miss the reference. You referred to a fictional television show.
Now you're changing the narrative to some irrelevant author's opinion. What's interesting is you've done a complete 180 on your original assessment, such is the corner you'e painted yourself into.

Yes I referred to a fictional tv show... of a hillbilly becomming wealthy due to mineral desposits under his ground. Not through his own skill but by luck. You clearly missed the joke.

No I've done no such 180. Humour at Australia, the lucky country and former penal colony's, expense is obviously lost on you.

Well the "stupid map" doesn't explain the difference between different noun and verb meanings of words that are homographs. But may well contain location of people who do not appreciate the difference.

Yups. Unfortunately some (presumably) Brit passed it onto Australia, with graffiti in Sydney last century expressing the famous words "Australia, where men are men, and the sheep are nervous" who, after the "lucky country" affirmation weren't going to make the same mistake again, quickly deflected it onto NZ despite fewer sheep but on a sheep per capita basis.

The phrase gets borrowed a lot:

http://speedysnail.com/rory/mutton.html

It has even popped up in the USA now.

Too many foreigners in IPL looking for a pay day. Give me a Vijay Hazare or BCCI Corp with only Indian players any day. Crickets far more interesting to watch and follow with only Indians playing Indians. #Rupees4IndianCricketersOnly #NationaliseInternationalSport #BoardofCricketControlInternational

Yes. Brilliant. So when an Indian team wins IPL games - its due to Indians and when it loses it is cos the weak punching bag imports. I like it. But lets not pay them for playing win or lose. Have the BCCI get their wages. Those are Indian rupees.

Doug Bracewell Guilty in Drink and Drive

Ofcourse. Foreigners get paid 20 times that of local boys barring rock star Indian players. If they don't perform as per expectations what's the point in playing them? Foreign players bring spice to the team to make all play competitive cricket. Just like any spice, it should not dominate main ingredients. Any spice should be sparingly used. IPL got 8 teams, 32 active foreign players. Total of more than 100 foreign player presence. A good recipe need the right mix of ingredients in right proportions. No wonder IPL is so successful.

Isn't Freddie Mercury the first and last Indian Rock Star?

Although I quite like that Apache Indian song Boom Shack-A-Lack if we include one hit pop hits. Cornershop is more UK than India.

I've seen Indian Gangster Rap groups performing for IPL events, the Run DMC gold chains with authentic local Lungi's is definitely a novel outfit combination.

bit of a stretch to label him 'Indian' considering he wasn't born there. His ancestry was Persian.
