Rating Players - India vs Aus Series

Postby bolero » Tue Mar 28, 2017 10:54 am

Murali Vijay - 1/10 Was a failure for most of the series. Should have been replaced by Dhawan. Indian team's weakness in not having left handed batsmen was not exploited by Aussies.

KL Rahul - 8/10 - Revelation for his consistency throughout the series.

Pujara - 7/10 - Played when it mattered most. Showed his experience after all those years of toil and triple hundreds in domestic cricket.

Kohli - 3/10 - The 3 is only for the captaincy. Was a miserable failure with the bat, injury sidelined him in 3rd and 4th tests. India's best batsman had a shocking tour. Was at his usual aggressive best at captaincy.

Rahane - 5.5/10 - Was top class as captain and fielding good. Batting nowhere close to his best.

Karun Nair - 0/10 - Was a miserable failure with the bat. Dropped crucial catches including a costly one of Warner.

Saha - 7/10 - The poor man's Dhoni , pint sized Saha really pulled up his socks scoring vital runs for the team. Was tidy behind the stumps.

Jadeja - 9/10 - Probably the reason why India won the series. Good all round display.

Ashwin - 5/10 - Was nowhere close to his best, showed flashes of brilliance.

Kuldeep Yadav - 6 /10 Had an impressive debut, but his real test will be once the batsmen pick him.

Umesh Yadav - 7/10 - Bowled with fire throughout the series. His Achilees heel was he was inconsistent in the past, though blessed with pace. Injury prone.

Ishant Sharma - 4/10 - Was average as has been his career.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar - 6/10 - Unlucky with dropped catches off his bowling. Bowled with intent.

Jayant Yadav - 0/10 - Had a forgettable series, whatever little he played in. Mishra would have been a far far better pick than Jayant.

I would agree that Jadeja has been excellent in the series, though think 5/10 a little harsh for Ashwin - and I thought the criticism of him on commentary was a bit unwarranted as I'd suspect him the better bowler overall out of the two of them.

I would praise Pujara also but I am a little biased in that I praise him just because he is a Test-focused batsman in a nation of T20 fanatics and I want him to play forever :D

And I'd give Sharma 0/10 because that's all I'd ever give him.

The biggest fan of Umesh Yadav has to be Squarecut (Atul) in our forum. He proved his potential finally.

So does Smith review or walk with 10 off 10?
If any moderator or administrator is able to add Going South to my foe list, I would greatly appreciate it.

My rating, incuded in this post itself.

bolero wrote:Murali Vijay - 1/10 Was a failure for most of the series. Should have been replaced by Dhawan. Indian team's weakness in not having left handed batsmen was not exploited by Aussies.

*** 3/10 *** Granted he failed most times but 1 is a bit harsh, IMO. And Dhawan? Please no! Agreed that BCCI need more left-handed batsmen in their side - and it's not like I dislike Dhawan or anything - but he needs to sit out for a while and reflect on why he's out.

KL Rahul - 8/10 - Revelation for his consistency throughout the series.
*** Agree *** Much of his consistency was because he couldn't play the big shots (thanks to shoulder problems). Was forced to play responsibly. :-)

Pujara - 7/10 - Played when it mattered most. Showed his experience after all those years of toil and triple hundreds in domestic cricket.
*** Agree ***

Kohli - 3/10 - The 3 is only for the captaincy. Was a miserable failure with the bat, injury sidelined him in 3rd and 4th tests. India's best batsman had a shocking tour. Was at his usual aggressive best at captaincy.
*** 0/10 *** I don't even rate his captaincy, to be honest.

Rahane - 5.5/10 - Was top class as captain and fielding good. Batting nowhere close to his best.
*** Agree ***

Karun Nair - 0/10 - Was a miserable failure with the bat. Dropped crucial catches including a costly one of Warner.
*** Agree ***

Saha - 7/10 - The poor man's Dhoni , pint sized Saha really pulled up his socks scoring vital runs for the team. Was tidy behind the stumps.
*** 9/10 *** I've adopted this guy, so mine might not be the most objective assessment of him :-) , but what more could he have done? Hardly put a foot wrong behind the stumps, scored runs when they mattered - and only a 7? That's harsh! He hardly ever gets credit for his contribution, so I want to be extra-nice to him. :-)

Jadeja - 9/10 - Probably the reason why India won the series. Good all round display.
*** Agree *** For all my "bully" comments (and I maintain he's one), can't deny his immense contribution in this series. Aussies aren't the best players of left-arm spin anyway (Herath!) but with Jadeja's accuracy, even if he doesn't spin the ball much, he's at them ball-after-ball. You miss, I hit, guy.

Ashwin - 5/10 - Was nowhere close to his best, showed flashes of brilliance.
*** 6/10 *** His batting was terrible, his bowling way below his best. But he was battling an injury - so I'd want to give him a bit of slack. Sorely felt his "absence" at Ranchi, where, to be honest, his bowling was poor.

Kuldeep Yadav - 6 /10 Had an impressive debut, but his real test will be once the batsmen pick him.
*** 8/10 *** True, he might struggle if batsmen start picking him, but we're judging on what has happened, not on what might happen in future.
Just loved seeing him bamboozle Maxi.

Umesh Yadav - 7/10 - Bowled with fire throughout the series. His Achilees heel was he was inconsistent in the past, though blessed with pace. Injury prone.
*** 9/10 *** Another case which I want to be extra-nice too, considering he's rarely in the limelight. What a tremendous performance from him in this series. If not 9/10, def 8 or 8.5.

Ishant Sharma - 4/10 - Was average as has been his career.
*** Agree *** Maybe even 3/10.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar - 6/10 - Unlucky with dropped catches off his bowling. Bowled with intent.
*** Agree ***

Jayant Yadav - 0/10 - Had a forgettable series, whatever little he played in. Mishra would have been a far far better pick than Jayant.
*** Did he even play in this series? ***

Smith - 9.5/10 (0.5 deducted for the brain fade and some absurd captaincy like underbowling Lyon at times).

People who performed when chips were down and series hung in balance deserve special praise- viz Rahul, Pujara and Rahane (second test), Pujara and Saha (3rd test), Saha and Jadeja (4th test) etc. In bowling, key contributions by Jadeja whenever chips were down, and also by Umesh Yadav, and Ashvin. Kuldeep Yadav turned out to be a spectacularly successful gamble that changed the complexion of the final test.

Overall, it was a series for the ages. The fact that it went in favour of BCCI means that I will fondly remember this series, as also this domestic season.

I will rate the Aussies seeing as no one else is.

Warner: 2-10. Went missing in action. Continued his downward spiral specially in the sub continent.

Renshaw: 8-10. The rock of the opening pair. Is playing well beyond his tender years. Will play 100 tests for his country.

Smith: 10-10. One word ..phenomenal!!

Marsh: 6-10. One vital innings saved a test match. Not much other than that. Never lived up to his pre series hype as the sub continental specialist.

Handscomb: 6-10. Has promise. Got starts without going on. Except his match saving innings. Showed great character along with Marsh. Was also smart in the close fielding positions.

Mitch Marsh: 5-10. Injury probably saved him the axe. Maxwell: 8-10 May have finally come of age at this level. His century was of the all quality. Fielded brilliantly.

Wade: 7-10. Was surprisingly tidy standing up. Looked in control standing back. Apart from one or two knocks his contribution with the bat was moderate. Need more from him if he is to stave off suitors.

Starc: 6-10. Too wayward. Never got his swing going.

Cummins: 9-10. Showed in his two comeback tests that his express pace still worries even the best batrsmen. Should be a sensation in the home Ashes.

Hazlewood: 7-10. Is still coming to terms with sub continental pitches. Alway built pressure with his accuracy.

SOK & Lyon. Went from diamonds in the first tests to rocks for the remainder. Both 6-10.

I thought Ishant Sharma bowled okay, he kept pressure on at vital times and bowled some decent spells. I'd give him a 5 as it was passable.

way too generous for a team that lost a series. Renshaw 8/10? come on. 6.5 at best.

Its obvious that you hate Lyon, who probably deserves a higher score than most other players in the squad in that series. I wouldnt give him more than 7 though.

Many of these scores read like trolls actually.
