Idea for a draft

Postby raja » Thu Jan 21, 2016 4:37 am

Not sure anybody is in the mood for a draft in the near future - and, to be honest, I have a lot on my mind too right now, so will probably not be able to take part in one, even if we do have one.

But I just got this idea.

We always have drafts based on "best players" (with various filters).

How about one with "worst players"? So this works a bit like the "nasty" game that Ankur had introduced a while ago.

So your goal should be to pick the worst team possible. :-)

Set a minimum criterion of x Tests (say x = 10), and ensure that each batting position is religiously followed.

e.g. if you're picking somebody as opener, he should have played more than half his Test career as an opener.

Similarly have some rule for bowlers, so that people don't pick 5 rubbish spinners.

Just an idea.

Will be a change from picking "the best" all the time.

Will also mean that Bradman and Sobers are unlikely to be picked. :-)

Should be just played 1 Test, Xavier Doherty should not be excluded from such a draft.

We can't define all time worst just by statistics alone as most of the players might have such numbers. Recent players should be fun. I think I shared this idea in the last draft game.

 I actually think his a quality bowler but he always gets roads to play on. If he played for NZ or South Africa he'd average low 20s.

Verity, you can have him.. we will take one of your bowlers in exchange.. (of our choice of course) . With pissant, you then get a bowler with a notional average of 20 and he can double up as a guitar player for BeeGees..

Oh, did you? I don't think I noticed. Anyway, I think it could be a fun idea - especially when each participant tries his best to make his player look worse than others' picks. :-)

And others insist the picked player isn't that bad. :-)

Btw, I have a certain No.4 in mind. :-)

I'll admit that before suggesting 10 Tests as a cut-off, I first checked Wade's Test record.
12 Tests - so 10 should be ok. :-)

By setting a cut-off of 10, we are making it more interesting. It means players who have been persisted with for at least 10 Tests (maybe on potential...ahem!) but never quite delivered. :-)

Am wondering whether we should exclude Bangladesh/Zimbabwe from this. And maybe pre-2000 Sri Lanka.

We did this one for worst ODi players ever. It was quite fun although we never finished it.

I am always in for a draft game.

Actually to be fair to him, having looked up his record, though he might have played less had WSC not happened, his record during an era of quality bowling and when playing inconsistently and sporadically is actually half-decent

A lot of coaches who were nothing players.

Andy flower and Gary Kirsten spring to mind as exceptions

But think of the nothing careers Peter moores and Paul farbrace had, Duncan fletcher, Bob woolmer, so many of them had mediocre international careers at best

When are we doing this?

Also I think the ground and era should be picked - i.e worst side to tour India in the 2000s etc. (You wouldnt have to pick players from that era).

Sure, I should have time for this. I think I picked Steve Smith in the ODI worst players draft, as he'd played like 25 matches and hadn't hit a 50. Oops

Idea for a draft

Postby Going South » Sat Jan 23, 2016 7:51 pm

Hmm.
Sometimes a song is lovely if you listen but the moment you see video of it from that time onwards it's no longer fun.
When visuals does not justify the song you feel let down but cannot stop mind to flash that visual when you hear it.
Very few master it to match visual and song.

Yeah, but if they don't dress right, or the lead singer dances wrong, or their hair is out of place, I just will never listen to that song again.

I cannot.

It is no longer fun.

Very few master the live performance costumes, let alone get the hairstyles in tune to the songs they are playing. Oh and do not talk to me about people swaying, dancing and strutting.

Sometimes they have band members wearing glasses.

Just ruins songs for me.

Saw John Lennon wore glasses, could never listen to the Beatles again.

I saw that Steve Tyler looks like an old woman, but that is okay, because it sounded to me like Aersomith was fronted by an old woman.

My sentiments exactly !!!

My opinion about a song DRASTICALLY changes once I see the video or live performance of the song, usually to the -ve side.
A song is made for listening pleasure and SOUND is the most important element of a song.
When a song gets dominated by visual splendor and flashy lights, the video part of the song dominated audio part of the song!
When it happens, if I put it crudely in your words, A famous flashy T20 player get opportunity to play test cricket and he played it the same way in test cricket too by playing just 4 overs and making quick 20 score and gets out. At that time, how do you feel? nauseated? indigestion? vomiting sensation? ...exactly the same feeling for song too.
You buy & listen to song for sound.
You dont buy a camera for its video capabilities or a camcorder for its photo taking capabilities.
A good song loses its virginity & becomes a whore if its video dominates audio.
Its like a good book made into a bad movie and spoil the essence of that good book.

What I do not understand is the criticism that the most significant and perhaps greatest music duo of the 20th century faced, for not only matching the music video to the songs, so as to ensure a perfect match, but cared about the audience so much so that they actually replaced the singers in not only the music video, but also in concerts.

Where is the respect displayed for them?

The bicycle shorts match the running cycle dance moves. The singers match the song. It is a masterpiece.

But it was no one hit wonder. No.

Milli Vanilli being disbanded for unselfishly looking after the viewing public is a truly significant event in pop music of far greater reaching proportions with such deep ramifications far exceeding those of Simon and Garfunkel squabling, John Lennon getting a girlfriend, Mark Wahlberg pursuing a rap career, Kurt Cobain purchasing a shot gun or Bob Dylan buying an electric guitar.

Right from the birth of MTV, Mark Knoeffler knew to give the people what they wanted...

Sweatbands.

A lot of sweatbands.

Real sportspeople and rock stars know that to get public support and approval, they need sweatbands.

Lots of sweatbands.

We want our pop stars, our rappers and our rockers of both genders covered in sweat bands when doing music videos or concerts.

Personally, I think it is about time sweat bands make an introduction to the last night of the proms.

We'll build Jerusalem on Rule Britannias pleasant green and not be slaves. Remix.

One love.
