Good to see Trescothick is still scoring runs

Postby Boycs » Wed Apr 29, 2015 12:36 pm

The 39 year old still seems to be going strong, albeit in the most batting-friendly ground in the country. 140 and 76-odd against Middlesex this match to start off the season following on from over 1,000 runs with 4 centuries last year at 42-odd average.

One of my first favourite cricketers, along with Ashley Giles. Have met both of them, both seemed like nice blokes.

Easily one of the best ODI batsmen Eng have produced if not the best.
It is not often u com across a quality individual who lives n breathes loyalty 2 his country n teammates. His individual contribution has been outstanding despite continuing unwarranted n unfair criticism that he gets from both media n public–Dav on Misbah

+1

His partnerships with Knight must have been something to see, I wonder what their stats were.

Not too bad for England. I *think* (as statsguru a bit fiddly) 43 partnerships, 1,567 runs, 36.44 average, 4 century partnerships with a best of 165. Only edged out by Bell and Cook who made 1,580 runs together at 43.88.

From memory, I really don't think he played much with Knight I remember them opening in 2003 WC together then Knight retired right after when he still had a lot of cricket left in him.

I remember being quite surprised when I saw Knights FC record, pigeon holing him as a one day player weaker at the longer game when I was younger growing up. Probably was quite popular with the Warwickshire fans?

Some english phrases are quite funny... no? "I was older growing up would not make any sense".. you would be younger when growing up obviously.. I mean what is the logic behind that statement? (No not asking or questioning your english skills.. just the "origin" of such a phrase where the obvious needs to be stated..

Would not "(when) I was younger" or "(when/as) I was growing up"

I wonder if it's supposed to be "when I was younger, growing up I always did X" or some such.

Where I come from people say "where's it to?" Rather than where is it

Yaa you know when I was in texas they used that phrase quite often.. where's it to (while asking for some direction or a store) and I figured it was short for "where it is towards?" i.e refering to a direction.. like to the east, to the west, to the left, right etc..

And instead of "where I come from" they would say "where this 'rope's' from".. never figured that phrase.. and instead of in "my part of the woods", it would be "in yonder woods".. (which used to refer to that blokes birth place).

Strange usage from their regions.

Most irritating of all is the Pennsylvania (not philli side but a little deep like say malvern, pittsburg, etc), they say "you know.. whatever" almost every sentence they speak.. it gets to your nerve.. you just do not know what to make of that.. are they being dismissive or just care free or just idiots? It is bizzare.

its something like this.

Reminds me of a bloke called Mark (forget his last name).. he was from some "aristocratic" family and his english was good lord.. completely incomprehensible. We were all in a conf room me, him, another indian bloke who barely could speak passable english but was a brilliant chap, and another african american bloke who was also very cool guy but spoke american english with a little bit of ebonics.

Now we were discussing some part of the project and somehow I managed to get my points across.. and this Mark feller was sitting in that chair, leaning his back "hard" on the back rest, and the chair would lean back.. it was a tilt chair.. with little wheels kinds.

Now he leaned back so hard, and while pushing on the edge of the table that it just went all the way and the wheels in the front lifted a bit.. a

He started sort of yelling for help but not one of us understood him.. It took me a while to realize that he was effectively wedged between the windowsill (his head) and his buttocks pushing the chair behind (so if it moved, he would fall on his back) but the chair being stuck to the table's leg unable to move any further. Basically he is trapped. If someone pulled the table back, he could only go down on his back.. but he cannot upright himself..

It took me some time to understand his wail.. that he wanted someone to dislodge him.. he was saying so many things but all of it gibbrish.. eventually we managed to remove him but he was might pissed that we did not do it earlier cos he was so darn helpless!!!

He and me were good friends. we would go out for beer.. he would talk and talk and I would nod.. not understanding a word or getting a word across to him.. it was funny.

My point is you post too long posts and the post loses track of what you are trying to say Making us lose interest. You also tend split posts on same one after another instead of editing previous post kind of annoying for readers. :bts:

Trescothick was a pretty solid player.

I remember one Champions Trophy tournament (the one where Windies pulled off an amazing win in the final against England) where Tresco hammered McGrath all over the place. I don't think McGrath was used to such treatment from an Englishman.

Tresco, Vaughan, Nasser Hussain - not bad at the top of the innings.

Guess not. As I say it's an unsubstantiated rumour but if true I don't blame him putting his marriage before England. Touring cricketers can't be the best husbands or fathers what with being away all the time. Thorpe had similar difficulties didn't he, and if I recall Gooch and Willis but they might have been after retirement?

England today is a really strong side - with its one weak link probably being an opening partner for Cook.
Imagine if Tresco hadn't retired early.

Btw, is England now the #1 Test side?
