1st T20I, Abu Dhabi, Mar 17 2021, Zimbabwe tour of United Arab Emirates

PREVIEW

Zimbabwe scent chance to upset weakened Afghanistan

Sean Williams' side will also want to prove a point, given they won't feature in this year's T20 World Cup

Blessing Muzarabani could be Zimbabwe's trump card with the ball.
Big picture

After a hard-fought Test series where the honours were shared, the focus in Abu Dhabi shifts to the three T20Is that Afghanistan and Zimbabwe will play within the span of four days.

Apart from the shared aim of winning the series, the two teams' respective goals with the bigger picture in mind will be quite different. Afghanistan will look to firm up their strongest team looking ahead to the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup scheduled in India later this year. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will not be participating in the World Cup, having not taken part in the qualifier event since their board was suspended at that time. They will look to show what the marquee event will miss in their absence.

Nigeria replace Zimbabwe in men's T20 World Cup Qualifier

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Gulbadin Naib wait on 'visa issue' ahead of T20I series

One thing going Zimbabwe's way - they are ranked 12th compared to their opponents' 9th - is that visa issues could force Afghanistan to play without their strongest XI. Five of their players - including Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gulbadin Naib - are yet to arrive in the UAE, which has forced their selectors to revise their squad with players who were around from the Test series who otherwise weren't in contention for the T20Is.

In nine previous T20I meetings between the two sides, Zimbabwe have just one win. And they have lost all five of their T20Is in 2020. But they'll be hungry to prove a point without World Cup action to look forward to, and a weakened Afghanistan side could balance the scales considerably. If they can keep Rashid Khan quiet, they might just stand a pretty good chance.

Form guide

(Last five completed matches, most recent first)

AfghanistanLWWWW
Zimbabwe LLLLL

In the spotlight

Fresh off an 11-wicket match haul in the second Test, Rashid Khan continues to be Afghanistan's No. 1 weapon in the format. In the last 12 months, he has taken 48 T20 wickets at an average of 18.85 while conceding just 6.14 runs an over. Those are elite numbers but he has done even better in his 16 matches in the UAE, with an average of 17.20 and an economy rate of 5.37. With two global tournaments approaching, Afghanistan could be tempted to make more use of his big-hitting skills as well, so don't be surprised if he gets a promotion wit the bat.

Zimbabwe's batsmen could face a difficult time against the spinners, but their bowlers could cause some problems too, particularly with Blessing Muzarabani leading the attack. In his nine T20Is, the tall right-arm quick has taken two or more wickets on six occasions, including a career-best 3 for 21 against Australia

The visa issue could force Afghanistan to field an XI that looks markedly different to the one that featured in their last white-ball outing earlier in the year.

Afghanistan (probable): 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 2 Usman Ghani, 3 Karim Janat, 4 Asghar Afghan (capt), 5 Mohammad Nabi, 6 Najibullah Zadran, 7 Afsar Zazai (wk), 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Naveen Ul Haq, 10 Amir Hamza, 11 Fareed Ahmad.

Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Prince Masvaure, 2 Tinashe Kamunhukamwe/Kevin Kasuza, 3 Wesley Madhevere, 4 Sean Williams (capt), 5 Sikandar Raza, 6 Ryan Burl, 7 Milton Shumba, 8 Regis Chakabva (wk), 9 Donald Tiripano, 10 Wellington Masakadza, 11 Blessing Muzarabani.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch in Abu Dhabi is expected to be good to bat on under lights, although the large boundaries could keep the sixes in check. It should be a warm, dry evening.

Stats and trivia

The last time these two teams met in a T20I game, in Chattogram in 2019, Zimbabwe beat Afghanistan for the first time in nine attempts.
Rashid is six wickets away from becoming the seventh man (and fourth spinner) to take 350 wickets in the format.

If he scores 28, Sean Williams will go past Elton Chigumbura (893 runs) and Brendan Taylor (909) to become Zimbabwe's second-highest T20I run-getter behind Hamilton Masakadza (1662).

Zimbabwe not Qualify for World Cup T20 in India For Administration Reasons.

2nd T20i at 3.30 pm IST

:saurabh:
Confident Afghanistan eye series win

March 18 2021

Afghanistan would hope for another good show from Gurbaz

Afghanistan carried forward momentum from their win in the second Test against Zimbabwe into the shortest format, comfortably overcoming Zimbabwe to take a series lead in the three-match series. It wasn't just the all-round brilliance, but what would've given them more confidence was that they managed to do so without five of their players, including Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gulbadin Naib, who had arrived in UAE late due to visa issues.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the opener, stole the show for Afghanistan with a dynamic half-century upfront after they were asked to bat. He raced away to an 87, before falling 13 short of what would've been his maiden T20I century. Skipper Asghar Afghan got among the runs too, carrying on his form from the Tests having scored a century, with a fifty to his name - his fourth in T20Is. Together, they took Afghanistan to 198 which turned out to be too much for Zimbabwe.

With the ball, they were led by their mainstay Rashid Khan, who is not just a star for Afghanistan, but one in T20 cricket, who returned three wickets. But most impressive was Karim Janat who returned 2-14 in his return game, having last played in 2019. It capped off a spectacular all-round game for them which will aid in their preparation for the upcoming T20 WC in October.

Zimbabwe haven't qualified for the T20 WC due to administrative reasons given that their board was suspended when the Qualifier was taking place. They also are not coming into the game with a record to boast of having lost their last five T20Is. Against Afghanistan in particular, they've lost nine of their last 10. Much comes down to their over-dependency on the experienced Sean Williams and Sikander Raza. But for them, game time is helpful to the advancement of their game, awaiting to host Pakistan next month at home where they will play two Tests and three T20Is. That said, for now, their focus will be on trying to level the series after conceding the series opener. They've lost each of their last five T20Is, including nine of the last 10 against Afghanistan.

What: Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe, 2nd T20I, Friday 19 March 2020, 2:00 pm local

Where: Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

What to expect: Afghanistan are high on confidence, and they're quite accustomed to be playing in the searing heat of the UAE. The maximum temperature will reach 31 degrees.

Team news:

Afghanistan

Afghanistan may be tempted to ring in some changes, bringing in personnel from the five who had their arrival delayed. However, they may not want to tweak a winning combination, giving the guys in the XI another go.

Probable XI: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Karim Janat, Usman Ghani, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Asghar Afghan (c), Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Amir Hamza, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fareed Malik

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe may also go in with the same side, unlikely to make any changes.

Probable XI: Tarisai Musakanda, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Sean Williams (c), Wesley Madhevere, Sikandar Raza, Richmond Mutumbami (wk), Ryan Burl, Donald Tiripano, Brandon Mavuta, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngara

Stats and trivia

Mohammad Nabi, now just a white-ball player, hasn't picked up a wicket in his last 12 T20I bowling innings. This is the longest streak without a wicket for any player who's bowled regularly in this format.

Rashid Khan will make his 50th T20I appearance on Friday.
Rashid is currently the joint-fourth-highest wicket-taker in men's T20Is, with Shakib Al Hasan. He needs two more wickets to go past Tim Southee (93 wickets).

Lasith Malinga (107) and Shahid Afridi (98) occupy the top two spots
