PREVIEW

Injury-hit Sunrisers look to get campaign back on track against below-par Knight Riders
Neither team is out of the running for a playoffs berth, but the odds are stacked against the

Should KKR stick with Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane at the top?

Big picture

Sunrisers Hyderabad's fortunes have fluctuated wildly this season. After racking up five successive victories, they have lost four games on the bounce and two of their key players - T Natarajan and Washington Sundar - to injuries. Their injury-enforced absence has coincided with Sunrisers' attack conceding 190-plus totals in each of their four losses. Sunrisers now need to win their remaining three league matches to be in with a chance to qualify; if they lose one then they will have to hope that at least one of Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore lose their remaining games.

Sunrisers have rifled through their bowling options, but Fazalhaq Farooqi, Kartik Tyagi, J Suchith and Shreyas Gopal haven't quite provided the control and bite that Natarajan and Washington brought. The good news for Sunrisers, though, is both Natarajan and Washington are likely to be fit for Saturday's fixture, as they look to snap their losing streak and work their way back into contention for the playoffs.

However, the bad news is the duo's potential comeback doesn't mask the troubles at the top. Captain Kane Williamson's powerplay strike rate of 79.52 is the lowest among batters who have faced more than 50 balls during this phase in this season. His opening partner Abhishek Sharma's form has also cooled off after a hot start.

LIVE in the USA
You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

Kolkata Knight Riders, too, have had to contend with top-order issues, but Venkatesh Iyer's comeback and the presence of Ajinkya Rahane, one of the better players of the short ball, gives them hope. Venkatesh's 24-ball 43 was central to Knight Riders posting their first fifty opening stand and highest powerplay total - 64 for 1 - this IPL, in their previous game against Mumbai Indians.

Knight Riders also found a way to fit both Pat Cummins and Tim Southee into their XI against Mumbai, but they have now been forced to rejig their combination, with Cummins flying back home after suffering a hip injury. Varun Chakravarthy also contributed to Knight Riders' victory against Mumbai and later, speaking to Star Sports, the host broadcaster, he said that the ball has been coming out of his hand better than it did in the early half of the season. Despite the positives, Knight Riders' chances of qualifying are slim.

In the newsl

Cummins' injury is understood to be a minor problem and he is expected to be fit in time for Australia's tour of Sri Lanka next month. Knight Riders have not asked for a replacement for Cummins.

Brendon McCullum will step down from his role as Knight Riders head coach at the end of the ongoing season, and will take charge of England's Test side.

With Sunrisers coming off a five-day break, head coach Tom Moody is hoping that both Natarajan and Washington would be available for the clash with Knight Riders.

Bishop: All the changes have 'created instability' in KKR ranks

Likely XIs

Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Venkatesh Iyer, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Sam Billings (wk), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Umesh Yadav/Shivam Mavi, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Varun Chakravarthy

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Kane Williamson (capt), 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 6 Shashank Singh, 7 Washington Sundar/J Suchith, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Marco Jansen/Fazalhaq Farooqi/Romario Shepherd, 10 Umran Malik, 11 T Natarajan/Kartik Tyagi

Strategy punts

Rahul Tripathi is Sunrisers' best bet to tackle Sunil Narine. He has taken the spinner for 67 runs off 45 balls at a strike rate of almost 149 without being dismissed in seven IPL innings. Although the sample size is much smaller, Tripathi also has a strong head-to-head record against Varun: 19 off six balls without being dismissed.

Farooqi, Marco Jansen and Sean Abbott are all bowlers who swing the new ball or float slower variations with the old one. Against Knight Riders, whose struggles against the short ball have been well-established, there is perhaps a case for Sunrisers to yank Romario Shepherd out of the bench and give him the license to try and bounce out the opposition along with Malik.

Stats that matter

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dominated Rahane in the IPL, having got him six times in 15 innings while keeping him to 89 runs off 96 balls

🥰Andre Russell has smashed Bhuvneshwar for 51 off 21 balls at a strike rate of nearly 243 while being dismissed just once in the IPL.

🤣Williamson's overall strike rate of 96.13 is the lowest among batters with a minimum of 100 runs this season. Rahane is just behind Williamson on this list with a strike rate of 100.96.

😍This will be Shreyas Iyer's 100th IPL game.

Game 63 big game for Both team for Play off birth

LSG vs RR

PREVIEW

LSG and Royals seek win to avoid mid-table logjam
While Royals search for solutions to make up for Hetmyer's absence, LSG might ponder giving Evin Lewis a game

Big picture

IPL 2022 has entered that phase where every result can boost or damage a team's playoff chances severely.

Lucknow Super Giants are second on the points table with 16 points from 12 games and a win against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday will see them through to the playoffs. Just below them are Royals, with 14 points from 12 games. Currently, they control their own destiny but can ill-afford a defeat, because then they may have to rely on other results going their way.

Watch live in the USA
You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

One reason behind Super Giants' and Royals' success is having largely settled playing XIs. However, both teams do have an Achilles' heel.

For Super Giants, it's that one middle-order slot. They started with Manish Pandey but he didn't have much success. In their previous match, they even handed an IPL debut to Karan Sharma. So far, the presence of quality allrounders has made up for that weakness. But does that mean they keep continuing in the same manner?

For Royals, Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer did the bulk of the scoring in the first half of the season. Hetmyer is now unavailable, and despite Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal showing some form, their batting depth remains suspect. At times they have promoted R Ashwin up the order with decent returns. Do they stick with the same combination, or bring in James Neesham for Kuldeep Sen? While Sen offers extra pace, his economy rate (9.41) has been on the higher side.

In the news

Royals have signed uncapped South African allrounder Corbin Bosch as a replacement for Nathan Coulter-Nile. Bosch, 27, is a seam-bowling allrounder and bats in the lower middle order.

Likely XIs

Lucknow Super Giants: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 KL Rahul (capt), 3 Deepak Hooda, 4 Karan Sharma/Evin Lewis, 5 Krunal Pandya, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Ayush Badoni, 8 K Gowtham/Jason Holder, 9 Mohsin Khan, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Avesh Khan

Rajasthan Royals: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Jos Buttler, 3 Devdutt Padikkal, 4 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 Riyan Parag, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Trent Boult, 9 Prasidh Krishna, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Kuldeep Sen

Evin Lewis launches a six, Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants, IPL 2022, Mumbai, March 31, 2022

Should LSG consider bringing in Evin Lewis to shore up their upper middle order?•BCCI
Strategy punts

The conventional wisdom in T20s is that batters find it easier to attack if the ball is spinning into them. But here is an exception: Yuzvendra Chahal, a legspinner, has dismissed Quinton de Kock, a left-hand batter, six times in 39 balls while conceding just 44 runs. On the other hand, KL Rahul, a right-hand batter, has smashed Chahal for 106 runs off 67 balls in T20 cricket while getting out only once. So Royals should use Chahal accordingly, perhaps bringing him on earlier if Rahul is the first batter dismissed.
To counter Super Giants' opening pair, Royals could also give the new ball to Ashwin. He has dismissed de Kock four times for 84 runs in 75 balls. While Ashwin is yet to dismiss Rahul, he has given away only 16 runs off 20 balls against him.
If Super Giants want to continue using Marcus Stoinis as a finisher, Evin Lewis could come into the side to fill that hole in the upper middle order. For that, they will have to leave out Jason Holder, which shouldn't impact their bowling much given how Mohsin Khan has stepped up. In place of Holder, they could bring in K Gowtham. With two left-handers in Royals' top four, playing an offspinner in the XI will not be a bad idea.

Stats that matter

With 459 runs in 12 innings, Rahul is currently the second-highest run-scorer this season behind Buttler (625). But he has also been dismissed five times in single digits, including three times on zero.

😍
Trent Boult has dismissed Rahul twice, including a first-ball duck earlier this season, but Rahul has taken 110 runs off 63 balls against him.
Avesh Khan is the only bowler in IPL 2022 with five or more wickets in each phase (powerplay, middle overs, death).
Among those who have bowled at least ten overs in IPL 2022, Mohsin has the best economy rate (5.19).

😂Boult has an economy rate of 14.28 at the death, the third-worst in the tournament.

Super Sunday

Rajasthan vs Lucknow

Did you know?

🥵In the seven times that he has batted at No. 3 in this IPL, Samson has scored 245 runs at an average of 40.83. However, his average dips to 16.40, with only 82 runs in five innings, when he has batted in other positions.

-❤️ RR's pacers have taken 37 wickets so far, which is the fewest among the 10 teams in this IPL. Their strike rate of 21.9 is the worst among all sides while their economy rate of 9.2 is only marginally better than CSK's 9.3.

-❤️ LSG's pacers have bagged 51 wickets, with the best average (23.10), second-best average (17.1) and also the best economy rate (8.11) so far in the competition.

Game 64

Capitals vs Kings

you know?

-🥵 PBKS have five 60+ Powerplay totals while DC has three such totals in IPL 2022

- 🥵With 1133 runs in 29 innings at an average of 47.2, Mitch Marsh is the top run-getter at one-drop position in T20 cricket since 2021.

- 🥵Rabada is currently on 97 wickets from just 61 IPL games, and could potentially overtake Lasith Malinga as the fastest to 100 tournament wickets (70 matches).

Below from Cricinfo

PREVIEW

Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings square off with winners set to break into top four

The losers of the match, however, will be pushed to the brink of elimination from the playoffs' race

Who should partner Warner at the top for Capitals?

Big picture

As the league stage of IPL 2022 enters the last stretch, Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals are neck and neck with six wins each from 12 games. On Monday, as they face each other, one of them will keep their playoff hopes intact, while the other will be pushed to the brink of elimination.

Both teams are coming off thumping wins. Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 54 runs, and finally seemed to have found their best XI and best combination. Jonny Bairstow has struck form after being moved to the top of the order, hitting fifties in the last two games. His blazing knock against Royal Challengers allowed Liam Livingstone to play himself in before going on an all-out attack.

In the bowling department, Rishi Dhawan has shown he can shoulder the responsibility of the fifth bowler, while the inclusion of Harpreet Brar has given them another spin option. The two also strengthen their lower order.

LIVE in the USA
You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

Capitals crushed Rajasthan Royals in their previous outing. David Warner has been consistent for them, but they will be buoyed most by Mitchell Marsh's form. Against Royals, Marsh hit 89 off 62 balls, apart from picking up 2 for 25 from his three overs. Chetan Sakariya, too, stepped up in the absence of Khaleel Ahmed, registering figures of 4-0-23-2. They will, however, be expecting more from Anrich Nortje while keeping an eye on Prithvi Shaw's fitness.

In the news

Shaw has been discharged from the hospital where he was being treated after a bout of typhoid. He is currently recovering under the supervision of the Capitals' medical team. It's not clear if he will be available for Sunday's match.

There has also been no official update on Khaleel, who missed Capitals' previous game with a hamstring injury.

Likely XIs

Delhi Capitals: 1 David Warner, 2 Prithvi Shaw/KS Bharat, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt, wk), 5 Rovman Powell, 6 Lalit Yadav, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Chetan Sakariya

Punjab Kings: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Rishi Dhawan, 8 Harpreet Brar, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Rahul Chahar, 11 Arshdeep Singh

Intel Heroes of the Week: David Warner and Mitchell Marsh

Strategy punts

Kings could tie Marsh up with spin. Since January 2021, he averages 25.85 against spin at a strike rate of 122.51. In the same period, his average against pace is 65.53 and his strike rate 150.53.
Warner has been severe on Rahul Chahar, hitting the legspinner for 61 runs off 34 balls without getting out even once. So Kings could avoid introducing Chahar into the attack when Warner is at the crease.
There doesn't seem to be a straightforward answer to how to stop Livingstone. Since the start of 2021, his lowest average (17.66) is against left-arm wristspin, while the lowest strike rate (133.11) is against left-arm orthodox spin. Capitals could take a punt on Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel against him.

Stats that matter

😍Among those who have played at least six innings in IPL 2022, Jitesh Sharma (180.88), Livingstone (175.73) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (175) are second, third and fourth, respectively, in terms of the strike rate in the first ten balls faced. Only Dinesh Karthik with 185.26 is above them.

😘Kagiso Rabada has dismissed Warner five times in 83 balls. But Warner has taken 124 off him, at a strike rate of 149.39.

😍Kuldeep has dismissed Shikhar Dhawan twice in 37 balls while giving away only 34 runs.

😍Mayank Agarwal has scored only 36 runs off 43 balls against Axar but has never been dismissed by him.
