Massive earthquake rocks Chile

A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has hit central Chile, killing at least 78 people, ministers say.
The quake struck at 0634 GMT about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago.
President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" in affected areas and appealed for calm.
People are moving to higher ground on Easter Island amid fears of a tsunami. Alerts are in place across the Pacific.
Tsunami warnings have been issued for Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Central America and Pacific island nations.
Santiago airport has been closed and all flights cancelled until further notice, airline officials say. Flights are being diverted to Mendoza in Argentina.
Aftershocks
The earthquake is the biggest to hit Chile in 50 years.
Giving details of the latest casualties, President Bachelet said 34 of the deaths were in Maule, 13 in the Santiago municipality, 12 in the O'Higgins region, 10 in Biobio, five in Araucania and four in Valparaiso.

She said these were preliminary figures and could rise.
President Bachelet said: "People should remain calm. We're doing everything we can with all the forces we have. Any information [we have] we will share immediately."
She said a "wave of large proportion" had affected the Juan Fernandez island group, reaching halfway into one inhabited area. Two aid ships are reported to be on their way.
Ms Bachelet said that "high tidal waves" could also reach Easter Island soon.
"Because of that we are evacuating people living in low-lying areas," she said.
Ms Bachelet said if there were more aftershocks, people in coastal areas of Chile should go to higher ground.

Chile well prepared
She warned people not to travel on roads in affected areas as a number of bridges were down.
Chilean officials said the worst affected town appeared to be Parral, close to the epicentre.
Television pictures showed a major bridge at Concepcion had collapsed into the Biobio river.
Chilean television said there had been a fire involving chemicals in the town of Colina, 20km north of Santiago, but that it was now under control.
Several hospitals have had to be evacuated in a number of areas, including Santiago, because of structural damage.
One resident of Chillan, 100km from the epicentre, told Chilean television the shaking there lasted about two minutes.
Other residents of Chillan and Curico said communications were down but running water was still available.
Many of Chile's news websites and radio stations are still not accessible.
Buildings in Santiago were reported to have shaken for between 10 and 30 seconds, with the loss of electricity and communications.
Officials said damage to Santiago international airport's terminal would keep it closed for at least 24 hours.

A number of fatalities were reported in the Santiago municipality
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 35km.
It also recorded eight aftershocks, the largest of 6.9 magnitude at 0801 GMT.
The USGS said tsunami effects had been observed at Valparaiso, west of Santiago, with a wave height of 1.69m above normal sea level.
One journalist speaking to Chilean national television from the city of Temuco, 600km south of Santiago, said many people there had left their homes, determined to spend the rest of the night outside. Some people on the streets were in tears.
A university professor in Santiago, Cristian Bonacic, said that this was a massive quake but that the cities seemed to have resisted well. Internet communications were working but not mobile phones.
Chile is highly vulnerable to earthquakes as it is situated on the Pacific "Rim of Fire", on the edge of the Pacific and South American plates.
Chile suffered the biggest earthquake of the 20th century when a 9.5 magnitude quake struck the city of Valdivia in 1960, killing 1,655 people.

Thanks all. Still haven't heard anything. I guess it will take a while for the lines to come back up.

Glad to know that your family in Concepcion is fine. That was the worst affected city anyway. It's a good thing that Chile is used to major earthquakes. I guess their buildings are extremely well made.

But I hope it can help find your family, and I hope they're okay.

Thanks Timy. I finally heard from my dad through email. Everyone is well. All the telephone lines are down though.

Sometimes you wonder how people survived when the internet did not exist!

I was finally able to speak with my dad today. The telephone lines are up and running again finally.

He was quite shaken up (no pun intended) by the earthquakes. He said that everyone was terrified by the huge quakes. My mom said that they shook like leaves and had to run down 6 floors every time the ground started shaking. There have apparently been around 7-8 strong aftershocks (6.0 on the richter scale or above). They have all prepared bags with essentials as well documentation and other important stuff so that they can run out prepared if another big quake comes their way.

My dad said that it was impressive that the buildings suffered minimal damage despite the huge quakes thanks to the construction. That said, the flat they live in did suffer some damage. They are quite stressed out with all the excitement. Hopefully things return to normal soon there.

Many beautiful, old buildings in Santiago have suffered a lot of damage.

Hundreds of looters detained in Chile

By Lisa Millar

Hundreds of looters have been detained in earthquake-hit Chile, where troops have been forced to fire tear gas to stop mobs from pillaging shops and homes.

Efforts to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake are being hampered by the need to deploy large numbers of police and security forces to stop the looting.

Meanwhile, there are desperate attempts to rescue dozens of people believed trapped in an apartment building that toppled during the massive earthquake.

Using jackhammers and drills, crews have been trying to force their way inside the apartment block in Concepcion, the nearest city to the epicentre of the earthquake.

They are still hearing knocking from people trapped inside the 70-unit building.

An estimated 500,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed by the quake and 2 million people have been left homeless.

Many of the estimated 700 dead were in coastal regions which were swamped by the tsunami that followed the quake.

Defence Minister Francisco Vidal said the navy failed in not sounding the alarm sooner.

"The truth, even if it hurts, is that a part of the navy made a mistake," he said.

The army has taken to the streets to stop the looters ransacking stores across the city.

One man taking away bags of flour said he needed food.

"This what is going to help me. Each person thinks what they think, and we do what we have to do," he said.

But many of those arrested were caught taking more than food.

One hundred and fifty people have been detained for breaking the city's curfew.

In Santiago, more than 400 kilometres to the north, US ambassador to Chile Paul Simons says the situation is calm.

"In our area here around Santiago ... life has largely returned to normal," he said.

"The Government is up and running, the stock exchange is running, the newspapers are out."

As the world offers aid to the victims of the massive quake, the experts are still amazed more damage and deaths did not occur.

The Chilean earthquake released nearly 1,000 times more energy than the one that struck Haiti.

In Haiti the death toll is estimated to be about 220,000 people but in Chile it is just over 700.

Bilham University of Colorado seismologist Professor Roger says there are a number of reasons for the difference.

"The Haiti earthquake happened at five in the afternoon when most people should have been out of doors and this earthquake happened in the early hours of the morning when everyone was in their dwellings," he said.

"The damage that has now occurred is likely from foundation failure, unexpected long-period shaking to large structures."
