Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Nairobi crashes, all 157 on board killed

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 bound for Nairobi crashed Sunday killing all 157 people on board, according to state media. The state affiliated Fana Broadcasting cited the airline saying there were no survivors from the flight.

According to the airline, the flight took off at 8:38 a.m. and lost contact six minutes later, crashing near the city of Bishoftu less than 40 miles to the southeast of Addis Ababa.

“It is believed that there were 149 passengers and eight crew onboard the flight but we are currently confirming the details of the passenger manifest for the flight,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline set up emergency hotline numbers for families and friends of victims and changed the cover image on its Facebook page to black.

The prime minister’s office issued a tweet expressing its “deepest condolences” to the families of those who lost people on the flight.

The airline said the plane was a Boeing 737 800 Max, the same model aircraft involved in the Indonesian Lion Air crash in October in which the plane plunged into the sea shortly after take off.
Ethiopian Airlines announced the acquisition of the brand new Max aircraft in July. According to the Swedish Flightradar 24 website, the aircraft had its maiden flight in October. The site added that the flight’s vertical speed was “unstable” after take off.

The Max model is the newest version of Boeing’s workhorse 737 model, the world’s most popular commercial aircraft.
Boeing issued a statement that it was aware of the accident “and is closely monitoring the situation.”
Following the crash of Lion Air flight 610 in Indonesia, Boeing issued an emergency notice that an erroneous sensor input could “cause the flight crew to have difficulty controlling the airplane,” leading to “possible impact with terrain.”
This model plane lacks a common override feature that allows pilots to reliably pull planes out of nose dives.
Ethiopian Airlines is the continent’s largest airline in terms of destinations and passengers served. It has ambitions to becoming the gateway to Africa.

The airline has over 100 destinations worldwide, including flights to Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
The airline’s last major accident was in 2010 when an aircraft plunged into the Mediterranean shortly after take off from Beirut’s airport killing all 90 people on board.

This is worrying.

Wonder how many such aircraft are in operation right now.

I read somewhere India is still flying it.

Not surprised.

If we can have MIG 21 (50 - 60 year old vintage) up against F 16 in a limited war, God only save India.

Yep. They see an opportunity to push for their own planes.

Boeing 737 MAX 8 crash: Airlines ground dozens of planes after Ethiopian Airlines incident - CNN

(CNN) — Airlines in multiple countries have suspended the use of Boeing's new 737 MAX 8 aircraft over concerns about its safety, after an Ethiopian Airlines flight of the same model crashed Sunday killing all 157 on board.

Flight ET302 to Nairobi had just taken off from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa Sunday when it reported technical problems and asked for permission to turn back. It crashed shortly afterwards.

As the crash investigation got underway, the Civil Aviation Administration of China ordered Monday that all domestic Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets be out of the air by 6 p.m. local time, due to its principle of "zero tolerance for safety hazards."

China has one of the world's largest fleets of Boeing 737 MAX 8, operating 97 of the planes, according to Chinese state-run media.

The move was followed by an announcement from Ethiopian Airlines that the carrier had grounded its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets as an "extra safety precaution." Cayman Airways also said on Monday it was grounding both of its "new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft ... until more information is received."

Oh STFU. it’s Boeing advanced airplane auto pilot program at its USA headquarters not some mom pop store in India. It’s developed by Americans due to security & intellectual property concerns. Use some common sense. Hence my comment on stereotyping Indians. It’s like me calling all Australians as born criminals wherever they go.
