Govt took a very rash decision, no doubt.
Now it's in major damage control mode.

Efforts are being made to muzzle any criticism of this step.
Even the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) put out an advisory to its members to not voice any criticism of this move on any platform.
When ICAI was called out on this, they removed the advisory, saying the particular line was left in there "by oversight".

The Western Railway (railways in India are govt-owned and run) put out a warning to its employees, saying they would invite disciplinary action if they criticized this move.

You have to live in India now to see the mess that's been created.
Talk of "minor inconvenience", "short-term pain for long-term gain" , "no pain, no gain" is all ok for middle-class but for those already on the margins, their livelihoods have been wiped out. Some have even committed suicide.
