It does look that way. At least if not bankruptcy, its strings are now entirely held by the US.
This was true to some extent earlier too, but that was more political than economic.
Now it is complete in every respect.

Of course, even if the Saudi populuation goes through hardship, the royal family won't. It must have already good care of itself by now.

It would be great if they are. That said - what will happen to all their slave labor and their overseers if the Saudis go under?

its economy has been underpinned by the US since the Kissinger agreement of the 1970s
the US buys their petroleum and builds up their country in exchange for their petrodollar investment in US stocks

word is the US want to be energy self sufficient and the investment in alternative energies is a hedge in case they cannot produce enough petroleum if the fuse is lit in the middle east - ie Saudi Arabia and Iran destroy each other.
that may indeed happen if Iran get their prized nuke - at it doesnt seem far fetched there are those in the US who actually want this to happen though wont admit it publicly in as many words, however the lines can be read between.
