# 8 Miraz hits 103 today for BD (Feb 04,2021)

STATS

Biggest leads, and highest score at No. 8
Stats highlights from a batting fest by Sri Lanka on the third day against Bangladesh in Mirpur

Kithuruwan Vithanage's unbeaten 103 equals the highest Test score by a Sri Lankan batsman at No. 8

Sri Lanka's first-innings lead of 498 is the seventh-highest in Test cricket. The last time a team took a bigger lead was in 2006, and Sri Lanka were the dominant side in that game as well: against South Africa in Colombo, they declared at 756 for 5, with Mahela Jayawardene scoring 374 and Kumar Sangakkara 287, after South Africa had been bowled out for 169 in their first innings. At the receiving end in that match, South Africa had dished out similar treatment to England three years earlier at Lord's, when they declared at 682 for 6 after bowling England out for 173. The four other instances of teams taking first-innings leads of more than 498 were all when the teams batting first made huge scores and then dismissed the teams batting second cheaply.

The biggest contribution for Sri Lanka came from Jayawardene, who scored an unbeaten 203, his seventh double-century in Tests. Only three batsmen - Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Sangakkara - have scored more doubles in Tests.
Jayawardene also became the third batsman to score 1000-plus Test runs against Bangladesh, after Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan. In 15 innings against them, Jayawardene has scored 1063 runs at an average of 81.76, with five centuries. Only Sangakkara and Sachin Tendulkar have scored as many Test hundreds against Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka's total of 730 for 6 declared is their fifth 700-plus total in Tests, and their highest against Bangladesh; their previous-best against Bangladesh was 577 for 6 declared in Colombo in 2007. The last time a team scored 700-plus in a Test innings was in 2011, when England made 710 for 7 declared against India at Edgbaston.

Kithuruwan Vithanage's unbeaten 103 equals the highest Test score by a Sri Lankan No. 8 batsman: Thilan Samaraweera had made the same score at this slot against India in 2001. The only other Test century by a Sri Lankan at No. 8 is Chaminda Vaas' unbeaten 100 against Bangladesh in 2007.

Six Sri Lankan batsmen topped 50 in the innings, which is the second-best in their Test history. In the second innings against England at Lord's in 2006, seven Sri Lankan batsmen went past 50. For the 11th time in Tests, there were three or more hundreds in a Sri Lankan innings

Remember Bonner (86) & Mayers (210*)

'Kyle Mayers - Remember the name!'
February 07 2021

Mayers guided West indies' chase with an unbeaten double ton.

With a fourth-innings double century on his Test debut, Kyle Mayers was the hero for West Indies who created history by chasing down an improbable 395 in Chattogram to beat hosts Bangladesh by 3 wickets.

Here's how the Twitterverse reacted to Windies' record-breaking feat:

Consider the inexperience. Consider that it’s tough condition on the final day of a test in Asia. This has to be one of the most significant achievements in The history of Wet Indies cricket. Well played Kyle Mayers, Nkrumah Bonner @Coachsim13 Kraigg and the team.

What’s with depleted teams pulling off unprecedented away Test wins? West Indies, missing several first-choice players, including their captain, have just beaten Bangladesh by chasing 395. And a debutant is the hero with 210*! Tremendous win @windiescricket #BANvWI #KyleMayers

No team has successfully chased a higher total in Asia

4 Targets higher than 395 chased down successfully by sides in the fourth innings. West Indies sit on top of that table when they chased down 418 against Australia in St John's in 2003.

Highest successful chases in Tests

Team Target Wkts remaining Against Venue Season
West Indies 418 3 Australia St John's 2003
South Africa 414 6 Australia Perth 2008/09
Australia 404 7 England Leeds 1948
India 403 6 West Indies Port of Spain 1975/76
West Indies 395 3 Bangladesh Chattogram 2020/21
Sri Lanka 388 4 Zimbabwe Colombo (RPS) 1917
India 387 6 England Chennai 2008/09

395 chased down by West Indies is the highest ever by any team in Asia. The previous highest being Sri Lanka's 388 against Zimbabwe in Colombo RPS in 2017. This was only the third successful 300+ chases by a visiting team in Asia after New Zealand's chase of 317 in Chattogram in 2008/09 and Australia's chase of 307 in Fatullah in 2006, both against Bangladesh.

6 Kyle Mayers became only the sixth player to score a double hundred in the fourth innings of a Test. He was the first to do so since Nathan Astle in 2002 and third West Indies player after George Headley and Gordon Greenidge. Before Mayers, Greenidge was the only other player to score 200+ in a successful fourth-innings chase.

Double hundreds in 4th innings

Player Runs For Against Venue Season Result
GA Headley 223 West Indies England Kingston 1929/30 Draw

WJ Edrich 219 England South Africa Durban 1938/39 Draw

SM Gavaskar 221 India England The Oval 1979 Draw

CG Greenidge 214* West Indies England Lord's 1984 Won

NJ Astle 222 New Zealand England Christchurch 2001/02 Lost

KR Mayers 210* West Indies Bangladesh Chattogram 2020/21 Won

6 Mayers also became the sixth batsman to score a double century on debut and the first to do in the second innings. He became the second West Indies player to do so after Lawrence Rowe, who scored 214 and 100 against New Zealand in Kingston in 1971/72. The previous highest by any player in the second innings on debut was George Headly's 176 against England in Bridgetown in 1929/30.

Double hundreds on debut

Player Runs For Against Venue Season
RE Foster 287 England Australia Sydney 1903/04
LG Rowe 214 West Indies New Zealand Kingston 1971/72
DSBP Kuruppu 201* Sri Lanka New Zealand Colombo (CCC) 1987
MS Sinclair 214 New Zealand West Indies Wellington 1999/00
JA Rudolph 222* South Africa Bangladesh Chattogram 2003
KR Mayers (WI) 210* West Indies Bangladesh Chattogram 2020/21

216 The stand of 216 between debutants Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner is the second-highest partnership involving two debutants in the history of Test cricket. The only pair to score more is Khalid Ibadullah and Abdul Kadir, who put together 249 for the opening wicket for Pakistan against Australia in Karachi in 1964/65.

171 The first-innings lead of 171 runs conceded by West Indies is the highest ever they have overturned to win a Test. The previous highest being 161 against Australia in Bridgetown in 1998/99, when Brian Lara's 153* helped them to a one-wicket victory.

Stats: Root's winning streak and Kohli's string of losses

Joe Root has now led England to six wins in as many Tests in Asia while India have now lost their last four Tests under Virat Kohli
Led by James Anderson's mastery with the ball, England bowled out India for 192 in the second innings to register a facile 227-run win in the first Test in Chennai. Here's the statistical round-up of yet another win for England in Asia:

4 - England's win at Chepauk was only the fourth win by any team against India in India since the start of 2011. Three of India's four defeats have come against England (two in 2012/13 series) while the the other came four years ago, against Australia in Pune in 2016/17. India was unbeaten in their last 14 Tests (11 wins) coming into the first Test in Chennai.

6 - This was England's sixth consecutive Test win in Asia following the 3-0 and 2-0 victories in Sri Lanka in 2018/19 and last month, respectively. The only other visiting side to win more in succession in Asia was Australia who won seven in a row between 2002 and 2004. These are the only two instances of more than three wins in succession in Asia by non-Asian teams.

England in Asia since 2018

Opponent Venue Winning margin Season Toss
Sri Lanka Galle 211 runs 2018/19 won
Sri Lanka Pallekele 57 runs 2018/19 won
Sri Lanka Colombo SSC 42 runs 2018/19 won
Sri Lanka Galle 7 wickets 2020/21 lost
Sri Lanka Galle 6 wickets 2020/21 lost
India Chennai 227 runs 2020/21 won
2 - Visiting captains with more wins in Asia than Joe Root's six in as many Tests. Graeme Smith led South Africa to eight wins in 21 Tests while Clive Lloyd had seven wins in 17 Tests as skipper in Asia.

26 - Wins for Root as England captain in 47 Tests at the helm. He equals fellow Yorkshire player Michael Vaughan who led England to 26 wins in 51 Tests. This was Root's tenth win overseas as skipper surpassing Vaughan's nine, both leading in 22 matches apiece.

Most successful England captains

Captain Mat Won Lost Draw Win % Away wins
Joe Root 47 26 15 6 55.3% 10
Michael Vaughan 51 26 11 14 51.0% 9
Alastair Cook 59 24 22 13 40.7% 8
Andrew Strauss 50 24 11 15 48.0% 5
Peter May 41 20 10 11 48.8% 4
Mike Brearley 31 18 4 9 58.1% 6
4 - India have now lost their last four Tests under Virat Kohli - two in New Zealand in 2019/20, the Adelaide Test against Australia last December and this one in Chennai - the most in a row under him. Prior to the sequence, Kohli led India to seven consecutive wins which was the most among Indian captains.

81 - Wickets taken by James Anderson in fourth innings during the course of his match-winning spell of 3/17 off 11 overs. He went past Stuart Broad's tally of 79 wickets to sit atop England's leading wicket takers in fourth innings of Tests.

227 - The winning margin for England in this Test, biggest in terms of runs in India and fourth biggest against India overall after the 319-run win in Nottingham in 2011, the 266-run win in Southampton in 2014 and the 247-run win in 1990.

1-This Test was the first time in 22 instances when R Ashwin picked a five-wicket in India and they ended up losing the Test. In the previous 21 instances, India won as many as 20 while one ended in a draw with scores level (vs WI, Mumbai WS, 2011).
