Crawley, Buttler and a day of milestones

Crawley and Buttler were involved in a 359-run stand - the highest fifth wicket stand for England in Tests
267 by Zak Crawley happens to be second highest maiden Test century by an England player. The only higher score is 287 by Reginald "Tip" Foster against Australia in Sydney in 1903/04, which is still the highest by a debutant in the format.

Highest maiden Test hundreds for England

Player Score Inngs Against Venue Season
RE Foster 287 1 Aus Sydney 1903/04
Zak Crawley 267 12 Pak Southampton 2020
WR Hammond 251 15 Aus Sydney 1928/29
RWT Key 221 14 WI Lord's 2004
WJ Edrich 219 12 SA Durban 1938/39
E Paynter 216* 14 Aus Trent Bridge 1938
D Lloyd 214* 2 Ind Edgbaston 1974

2 - England players younger than Crawley (22 years & 201 days) at the time of their maiden Test double hundred. Len Hutton was 22 years & 60 days old when he made the then world record of 364 against Australia at the Oval in 1938 and David Gower was aged 22 years & 103 days when he scored an unbeaten 200 against India in Edgbaston in 1979.

12 - Innings taken by Crawley to reach his maiden double hundred - the joint-fourth fewest for England along with Bill Edrich. The ones to achieve the feat earlier in their career were Tip Foster (debut innings), David Lloyd (second innings) and Len Hutton (ninth innings).

2018 - The last time an England number three scored a Test century - Jonny Bairstow making 110 against Sri Lanka at Colombo SSC. Since that Test, England's number three cumulatively averaged 31.27 till the start of the ongoing Test, which was the fifth worst among the 12 Test playing teams.

The last time it happened in a home Test was when Joe Root hit his career best 254 against Pakistan at Old Trafford in 2016.

267 by Crawley is the highest score for a batsman who got dismissed stumped in Test cricket history. The previous highest was 258 by Seymour Nurse in his final Test appearance against New Zealand in Christchurch in 1968/69.

359 - The partnership between Crawley and Jos Buttler - the highest ever for England for the fifth wicket in Tests, surpassing 254 by Keith Fletcher and Tony Greig against India at the Brabourne in 1972/73. It also happens to be the highest fifth wicket partnership against Pakistan, bettering 338 by Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers in Dubai in 2013/14.

Highest fifth wicket partnerships for England

Partners Partnership In Out Against Venue Season
JC Buttler - Z Crawley 359 4/127 5/486 Pak Southampton 2020
KWR Fletcher - AW Greig 254 4/79 5/333 Ind Mumbai (BS) 1972/73
LEG Ames - WR Hammond 242 4/133 5/375 NZ Christchurch 1932/33
DCS Compton - NWD Yardley 237 4/170 5/407 SA Nottingham 1947
JM Bairstow - DJ Malan 237 4/131 5/368 Aus Perth 2017/18
PD Collingwood - EJG Morgan 219 4/118 5/337 Pak Nottingham 2010

1 - Higher partnership in a Test between England and Pakistan for any wicket than the 359-run stand between Crawley and Buttler. Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf put together 363 for the third wicket at Leeds in 2006. The previous highest partnership for England and Pakistan was 332 for the eighth wicket by Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad at Lord's in 2010.

152 by Buttler is the fourth highest individual score for a designated English wicketkeeper in Test cricket. It is also Buttler's highest score in first class cricket, overtaking the 144 for Somerset against Hampshire in Southampton in May 2010 which was his maiden three-figure score in the format.

Highest scores by England wicketkeepers

Player Runs Balls Inngs# Against Venue Season
Alec Stewart 173 277 2 NZ Auckland 1996/97
Jonny Bairstow 167* 251 1 SL Lord's 2016
Alec Stewart 164 317 3 SA Manchester 1998
Jos Buttler 152 311 1 Pak Southampton 2020
Jonny Bairstow 150* 191 1 SA Cape Town 2015/16

583/8 declared is the highest total in six Tests in Southampton, surpassing England's 569/7 declared against India in 2014. It is the third-highest total for England against Pakistan after 598/9 declared in Abu Dhabi in 2015/16 and 589/8 declared in Manchester in 2016.

Wow Chaminda Vaas

How often have wickets fallen to the first two balls of an ODI innings?

Mitchell Starc got Jason Roy and Joe Root with the first two balls of the match, the fourth such instance

How often have wickets fallen to the first two balls of an ODI innings? asked Robin Jackson from England

That Mitchell Starc double at Old Trafford last week - he dismissed Jason Roy and Joe Root - was the fourth time the first two balls of an innings have produced wickets in one-day internationals.

It also happened in Brisbane in 1988-89, when Australia's Terry Alderman bowled Ramiz Raja and Aamer Malik of Pakistan with the first two balls of the day, then Pakistan turned the tables in Durban in 2012-13, when Mohammad Irfan accounted for Hashim Amla and Colin Ingram with his first two deliveries.

But the top prize goes to the Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas, who took a hat-trick with the first three balls of Bangladesh's innings in Pietermaritzburg during the 2003 World Cup, dismissing Hannan Sarkar, Mohammad Ashraful and Ehsanul Haque. After a four and a wide, Vaas removed Sanwar Hossain with his fifth legal delivery to leave Bangladesh reeling at 5 for 4. It was the only time the No. 6 batsman has faced a ball in the first over of an international match.

Have Nos. 6 and 7 ever scored centuries in the same ODI before, as Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell did the other day? asked Michael Carter from Australia
That double by Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell during the entertaining final ODI of the English season at Old Trafford last week turns out to be the second time this has happened in official one-day internationals. The other occasion was an unusual one, during the Afro-Asia Cup in Chennai in June 2007. The Asian XI were struggling at 72 for 5 before No. 6 Mahela Jayawardene was joined by MS Dhoni - but they both scored centuries, and put on 218. The eventual total of 331 proved just too steep for the Africa XI.

Dane Cleaver scored 201 and made nine dismissals in a recent match in New Zealand. Has any wicketkeeper ever scored a double-century and taken more dismissals in the same match? asked Kenneth Malcolm from Australia

The Central Districts wicketkeeper Dane Cleaver achieved this remarkable double - 201, eight catches and a stumping - against Northern Districts in Napier in February 2020. No wicketkeeper has ever scored more than 200 in a match (even counting both innings) and made ten dismissals - but, remarkably, a non-keeper has. Playing for Gloucestershire against Surrey in Cheltenham in 1928, Wally Hammond made 139 and 143, and also took ten catches, eight of them off slow left-armer Charlie Parker.
----

What is the record for sixes by a team in one innings in an ODI, and a T20 international? asked Riz Naik from India

England set the record for the most sixes in a one-day international innings during last year's World Cup, when they crashed 25 against Afghanistan at Old Trafford. That included 17 by Eoin Morgan, the individual record. England held the previous best, too - four months earlier, in February 2019, they had clobbered 24 sixes against West Indies in Grenada - which broke the week-old record of 23, set by West Indies in Bridgetown, in a match they still lost.

In T20Is the record is 22 sixes in an innings, hit by Afghanistan against Ireland in Dehradun in February 2019. That beat the old mark of 21, which has happened three times now.

----

The recently retired Ian Bell took 100 catches in Tests. Is he the only one with this round number? asked David Adele from Kenya
Ian Bell, who has just retired from first-class cricket at the age of 38, took 100 catches in his 118 Tests. He is indeed the only man to stick on exactly 100, although South Africa's Jacques Kallis took 200, four of them for the World XI. David Boon took 99 for Australia. Two wicketkeepers also took 99 catches - Nayan Mongia of India, and Junior Murray of West Indies. Mongia also made eight stumpings, and Murray three. One of Murray's catches came in the field.

Viv Richards and Sourav Ganguly both took exactly 100 catches in one-day internationals
