439 overseas stars register for BPL special edition player draft
November 16 2019

The player draft for the special edition of BPL will be held on November 17.

Bangladesh Cricket Board on Saturday announced that seven teams will take part in the upcoming special edition of Bangladesh Premier League. The announcement was made during the logo unveiling ceremony hosted by BCB.

BCB decided to host the tournament all by themselves after they had cut ties with the franchises who were involved in the first six editions of BPL claiming that the franchises were making unreasonable demands.

"We have said it earlier that we are going to do it [special edition of BPL] on the occasion of 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We are not going to arrange it as a franchise-based competition, rather BCB will arrange the tournament. We will look for a sponsor for every team and if we get, then we can take them as sponsor. But all the teams belong to BCB. That is the main thing," BCB president Nazmul Hasan told reporters at the ceremony.

The participating teams are - Jamuna Bank Dhaka Platoon, Premier Bank Khulna Tigers, Rajshahi Royals, Rangpur Rangers, Sylhet Thunder, Cumilla Warriors and Chattogram Challengers. Dhaka Platoon and Khulna Tigers will be sponsored by Jamuna Bank and Premier Bank respectively while Chattogram Challengers will have the backing of Akhtar Furnishers. Jivani Footwear Company will sponsor Sylhet Thunders while IPC and Mind Tree will sponsor Rajshahi Royals.

As BCB failed to get any other sponsors they have decided to run Comilla Warriors and Sylhet Thunders by themselves while the seven teams will have the opportunity to pick players for their respective teams on November 17 from a players' draft event to be held in Dhaka.

"We all know that the countdown of Bangabandhu's birth anniversary is starting from December 8 as the government declared it. Our Prime Minister will inaugurate this BPL on the first day of the countdown. I think it's necessary and we are grateful to have such an opportunity. The countdown will start with Bangabandhu BPL. That's why we are saying this is most important."

A total of 181 Bangladesh players and 439 overseas players have registered for the players' draft. The local players are categorised in six different categories with Mashrafe Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal in Grade A+ category, having a price tag of TK 50 Lakh each (though that is TK 25 Lakh less than the previous year). The players of Grade A, B, C, D and E categories will get the same amount of money which they got in the last year.

Nine players in Grade A will have a price tag of TK 25 lakh while 24 players are in Grade B with a price tag of TK 18 lakh. The Grade C, D and E players will get TK 12 lakh, 8 lakh and 5 lakh each respectively.

While there is no place for Shakib Al Hasan as he is banned by ICC for failing to report corrupt approaches by the bookies, Nazmul insisted that they have assigned a member of Anti Corruption Unit so that are not embarrassed any further. Earlier, Mohammad Ashraful was banned for match fixing allegation in BPL.

"What we are doing is one anti-corruption unit person is assigned with every team and we have already taken that decision because I would say we had bad memories in the past," said Nazmul. "There is nothing to say about it. We want to be informed at the earliest if anything happens like that."

Although the number of foreign players has been increased this year, stalwarts like AB de Villiers, Steve Smith and David Warner who all participated in the previous edition of BPL, are missing.

The tournament will get underway on December 11

BPL player draft: Mortaza receives lifeline as Dhaka Platoons make late swoop
November 17 2019

Mortaza initially didn't find takers before Platoons made a move.
Dhaka Platoons gave Mashrafe Mortaza a lifeline as they picked up the four-time BPL winner late during the players' draft for the upcoming edition of the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League at a city hotel on Sunday (November 17). Mortaza, the current ODI skipper, did not find any takers until the fourth round before Platoon decided to pick him as their second A+ category player after grabbing Tamim Iqbal earlier.

"Basically we did not have the chance to call him earlier. Because we could call only one player from A+ category and we picked Tamim earlier," said Dhaka coach Mohammad Salahuddin after the draft "I feel T20 is a game of experienced cricketers because you have to take decision in a split second. Those who are experienced can take those decisions better because I won't play inside the ground. The more experienced heads you have the better it is for the team," added Salahuddin, who also picked Shahid Afridi in his squad.

Earlier it was stated that no one could pick two players from the A+ category before BPL draft commissioner Mahbub Anam came up with a special ordinance.

"If anyone wants to buy two players from the draft then the sponsors will have to pay the extra money of the A+ category player," said Mahbub. Mushfiqur Rahim was the first player to be picked in the draft by Khulna Tigers and when it came for Dhaka to make the call they went after Tamim. Chattogram Challengers picked national Twenty20 captain Mahmudullah while Rangpur picked Mustafizur Rahman.

Rajshahi went for Liton Kumar Das, Comilla preferred Soumya Sarkar while Sylhet picked up Mosaddek Hossain. As a result, Mortaza was ignored all along before Dhaka decided to rope the current ODI skipper, who has a price tag of Tk 50 lakh.

Teams had to choose at least nine local players and six foreign players from about 620 cricketers, that had 181 Bangladeshis and 439 foreigners. Pakistan's Shoaib Malik pulled out his name from the draft at the eleventh hour and was replaced by British-born Bangladeshi Robin Das though no team was interested in him.

Chris Gayle was the first foreign player to be picked when Chattogram opted for him. Rajshahi and Rangpur followed by calling for Ravi Bopara and Mohammad Nabi respectively while the draft ended with Dhaka picking Pakistan's Afridi as the last player.

The event did face an obstacle when Rangpur wanted to include young leggie Rishad Hossain in their team only to find his name nowhere to complete the obligation of picking one leg spinner in the squad. Earlier, the BCB made it mandatory for teams to pick at least one leg-spinner and a quick bowler, who can bowl at 140km speed.

There are some renowned coaches in this edition of that BPL that includes Ottis Gibson and Grant Flower. While Gibson will be coaching Comilla Warriors, Flower has been appointed as the head coach of Rangpur Rangers.

The BCB earlier announced that they were dropping the regular franchises from the upcoming edition claiming that the franchises were making unreasonable demands. BCB opted to make it a special edition marking the birth centenary of country's founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while also taking the ownership of the teams. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on December 11.

Dhaka Platoons: Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque , Hasan Mahmud, Mahedi Hasan, Thisara Perera, Laurie Evans, Ariful Haque, Mominul Haque, Shuvagata Hom, Mashrafe Mortaza, Wahab Riaz, Asif Ali, Roqibul Hasan, Zakir Ali, Luis Reece, Shahid Afridi.

21.10 Points

21.10.1 The following points system will apply:

2 (two) points for each match won;

1(one) point per team taking part in any match with no result and any match which is tied (where it was not possible to complete a Super Over at the end of play or where the Super Over itself is tied);

1(one) point per team for any match involving such team which does not commence for any reason (other than where the reason for such non-commencement is a breach of the Operational Rules by one Franchisee which results in such Franchisee forfeiting such match); and

0 (zero) points for any match lost or forfeited.

The team with the highest number of points shall be at the top of the table and the team with the lowest shall be at the bottom.

21.10.2 Where teams have an equal number of points their relative positions shall be determined by the following:

a. the team with the most wins in matches in the double league round will be placed in the higher position;

b. if there are teams with equal points and equal wins during the tournament, then in such case the team with the higher net run rate (as calculated in clause 21.12 below) will be placed in the higher position;

c. if following the net run rate calculation above there are teams which are still equal, then the team with the higher 'Wicket Rate'(A team's Wicket Rate is calculated by dividing the total wicket taken by that team throughout the tournament with the total over bowled by that team throughout the tournament; i.e. wicket taken per over) will be placed in the higher position;

d. if still equal at the end of the double league round then the team position will be determined by drawing lots.

21.10.3 References in paragraph 21.10 to "matches" shall not include the play-off matches. 21.11 Play-off matches

If any of the Eliminator, Qualifier 1 or Qualifier 2 matches are tied, or there is no result, the following shall apply:

a)the relevant teams shall compete in a Super Over to determine which team is the winner of the match in question; and

b) if conditions do not permit a Super Over within the time available to determine the winner or if the Super Over is tied, then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular Tournament, finished in the higher position in the League table (in accordance with paragraph 21.9 above) will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match.

The procedure for any Super Over shall be as set out in Appendix 6.

21.12 Net Run Rate

21.12.1 A team's net run rate is calculated by deducting from the average runs per over scored by that team throughout the tournament, the average runs per over scored against that team throughout the tournament.

21.12.2 In the event of a team being all out/innings completed in less than its full quota of overs, the calculation of its net run rate shall be based on the full quota of overs to which it would have been entitled and not on the number of overs in which the team was dismissed.

21.12.3 Only those matches where results are achieved will count for the purpose of net run rate calculations. Where a match is abandoned, but a result is achieved under Duckworth/Lewis, for net run rate purposes, team 1 will be accredited with team 2's Par Score on abandonment off the same number of overs faced by team 2. Where a match is concluded but with Duckworth/Lewis having been applied at an earlier point in the match, team 1 will be accredited with 1 run less than the final Target Score for team 2 off the total number of overs allocated to team 2 to reach the target.

21.12.4 In circumstances where a match (and the points for such match) is awarded to a team as a result of the other team's refusal to play, either by the match referee in accordance with Law 21.3 (a)(ii) as read with playing condition 21.3 or in accordance with the provisions of the relevant event agreements signed by the participating teams, the net run rate of the defaulting team shall be affected in that the full 20 overs of the defaulting team's innings in such forfeited match shall be taken into account in calculating the average runs per over of the defaulting team over the course of the relevant portion of the competition. For the avoidance of doubt the runs scored and overs bowled in such forfeited match will not be taken into account when calculating the net run rate of the team to whom the match was awarded.

Note: The Super Over is not included in the net run rate calculation.
