GMAH very prompt. I am predicting an easy Oz win, no RJ.

I am not a fan of Sri Lankan cricket.

without Matthews SL will be Limping in all 4 innings on Day night test plus canberra test.STARC CERTAIN to loose his place but srilanka now bats better in ODI so i assumes them to do same in test.

Do not underestimate srilankan Pace attack.

Australia's selectors have sprung another surprise by handing a maiden Test call-up to 20-year-old Will Pucovski for the series against Sri Lanka as part of a significant batting shake-up following the loss to India where the team's highest score across four matches was 79.

Joe Burns and Matt Renshaw have been recalled amid the batting shake-up suggesting another reshuffle at the top of the order. The bowling attack, which came under pressure during the final Test against India, remains unchanged.

Shaun Marsh's Test career appears to be over after he was dumped while his brother Mitchell Marsh has also been omitted after being axed for the Sydney Test. Aaron Finch, who lost his place for the final Test against India, has been dropped and perhaps more surprisingly so has Peter Handscomb after he was brought back in Sydney.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/

Will Pucovski first class record:
13 innings (entire career)
2 centuries, 1 x 50

one of them was on the road at the MCG that was a draw and 4 players scored centuries in that drawn match

this is Effing insanity

CA dartboard selection policy

he's from Victoria though so he has 100% backing from the Aussie media.

Australia squad for first Test against Sri Lanka: Tim Paine (c/wk), Josh Hazlewood (vc), Joe Burns, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Will Pucovski, Matt Renshaw, Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/austral ... 2019-01-09

I imagine it will be something like this...

1 Harris 2 Renshaw 3 Khawaja 4 Head 5 Burns 6 Labu 7 Paine 8 Cummins 9 Starc 10 Lyon 11 Haze

Drinks mixed by Pucovski and banana prep by Siddle...

CA XI warmup game includes Pucovski, Burns and Renshaw - prolly due to BBL:

Image

I'd say Pucovski would need a big score in that game with Burns or maybe even Renshaw failing miserably to get a shot in the test team...

Mind you - Renshaw may just be being groomed for the Ashes in mind...

often these series against 2nd tier nations are used to trial new players from the second string

I remember a series against NZ some years back where we trialed Mitch Starc, James Pattinson and someone else, I think Ben Cutting was 12th man
2 of them scored decent test careers out of that

Pucovski average 49 in FC, I will give him debut at 5.No Renshaw I need Burns to open with harris.

Yeah - its smart a thing to do - and look the payout for Agarwal, Vihari and Kuldeep now.

Australia may even reclaim the Warne Murali trophy that it lost when whitewashed by Lanka 2016 - or it could be like that NZ series some years back where it finishes 1-1. My god - how humiliating would that be? That would be like worse than Australia's record in Asia since 2008 ... which is by far the worst of all SENA nations...

I think it should be renamed SEN for a while. Just until Australia get their groove back.

REJOICE SHAUN MARSH IS HISTORY

40 Tests averaging 34 :lmao:

Most over rated player of his generation.

Bye bye you won’t be missed!

Good squad apart from the bowling unit, another quick man should have been added. Starc and Hazlewood aren’t good enough.

Starc just 28 years old his chance to bounce back during Ashes but aus afraid of Matthews { Canberra returns} and Karuna plus Kushal so they retained MS.

Starc did bowl some brute of deliveries touching 150 kmph, the one that got Rahane and the bouncers to Agarwal and Pujara. However, he returned to his wayward stuff.

Cummins and Hazlewood bowled well in patches.

Cummins was the best of the 3 seamers.

But all of them are far too good for Sri Lanka.

The thing is, he's only overrated by CA selectors and a few commentators.
Glenn Maxwell is universally overrated so he should wear that mantle.

one must surely be because Paddles gets the brag again because NZ beat them and two maybe to diminish the significance of BCCI defeating this hapless CA XI

I'm supporting Sri Lanka, but not for the reason GS is.

And certainly not out of hate for Australia. On the contrary, it's cos I (still) love Australia.

The two reasons I'm supporting SL are:
1) I want Australia to be in SUCH dire straits that when they go to England for the Ashes, no one gives them any chance of even drawing one Test.
So any Test that they even draw will be seen as a failure of England.

2) If even SL somehow manage to win the upcoming series, it will take a little of the gloss off BCCI's win. :-) It will further show that this Aussie side is eminently beatable.

So Katto got point no2 right. :-)

I think Australia can certainly draw a test or two in England given its inclement weather in summer.
I give them no chance already at recording a win there.

Always tough to balance the need to give your established bowlers some confidence by hoping they get good numbers against a weaker team like Sri Lanka, and to try and blood the reserve bowlers. If, for example, someone like Tremain came in and had a brilliant series would he then be considered to play the first Ashes Test?

Australia's problems come from its batting issues which would be rectified once Smith and Warner are back.

England are beatable. India lost 2 tests by 31 runs and 60 runs, tests which I felt India should have won if not for some mistakes.

Although at home England is superb and now they are winning away also in the subcontinent, they have certain chinks in their armour which if exploited would help Australia.

Lets be clear facing Sri Lanka is not the same as facing England that too in their den.

The strategy would have to be completely different.

Any weaknesses would be covered up against SL. Its not the same facing England and in their current form.

I remember him getting runs not so long ago in Test cricket.

Sheffield Shield is split into two short seasons. Renshaw didn't get any runs in the early season and had no opportunity to find form when the test series was well underway as the 1st class season was in hiatus for the BBL. ...and here lies one of the primary problems with Australian cricket.

I wouldn't underestimate Sri Lanka. They're not a great side, but CA XI is a truly dire side.

I know Bancroft got a big half century tonight in the BBL but in ESPN commentary they said Warner and Smith also got half centuries today.

So the three bad guys are approaching form together.

Off topic sorry chaps.

Aussies, would Bancroft be your first choice opener alongside Warner if this whole sandpaper thing never happened? I haven't seen him bat but I watched Harris in the India series and he looked quite decent. Couple issues with getting hit on the helmet and not getting that big score, even though his 79 was the highest score for Australia in the series.

Australia vs Srilanka: 2 Test Matches : Jan - Feb 2019 in Australia

Bancroft who?
Renshaw who?
Tremain who?
Harris who?

Hahahahaha ROFL

You guys pull out names out of your ass that are going to do zilch on chances of winning even against the lankans forget the ashes that too played in England.
Mwahahahahahaha.

The point is

AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TEAM SUCKS

No matter who you pick. All are equally bad.

You have ZERO bench strength.

Look at what BCCI & ECB do for their A match talent scouting & nurturing. Australia has a looooong way to go if this continue and no action is taken.
Though I dearly love T20, BIGBASH is NOT the answer to this problem.

ROFL.

They want Renshaw for Ashes?

Where’s that leave Harris?

Harris / Warner is locked in for me

Khawaja is another one that’s massively over rated for me, blokes for 7 tons in 8 years of Test cricket and massively out of form.

The younger Marsh has fallen from being named one of two new Test vice-captains less than four months ago to being out of the picture altogether.

There was speculation Marcus Stoinis may have been included in the squad but Hohns said it was futile to pick an all-rounder for the sake of it.

“If the all-rounder isn't performing and you don't have a good all-rounder, well maybe we shouldn't have one and go back to the stock standard six batsmen and four bowlers,” Hohns said. “But if you have a match-winning all-rounder, they're like gold. If we can unearth one, that'd be fantastic.”

Is taken them 14 years to realise that picking a all rounder for the sake of it is stupid.

Trevor Holmes is a slow moron.

Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of Australia's first ODI against India at the SCG after spending two days in hospital with the stomach illness gastritis. Ashton Turner, the Western Australia and Perth Scorchers batsman, has been called up as cover after showing impressive form in the Big Bash League with Australia coach Justin Langer lauding his running between the wickets and finishing skills.
Turner, 25, has previously played three T20Is against Sri Lanka in 2017 and has hit a timely run in the BBL with scores of 60 not out, 47 and 43 not out in his last three innings.
Unquote.

About time.
