It is difficult to visualize Ireland giving a decent fight in this test.

Making the step up to Test Cricket is a tall order even for a team at their peak, let alone one in decline. Who was the last team to win their first Test match actually?

From baggygreenmania's thread

baggygreenmania wrote:Aussie -born tweaker Nathan Smith is the surprise spinner in the squad at the expense of their regular offie George Dockrell.

Surprised that Smith got the nod as his only previous international experience was in an 'A' tour last year. Not surprised Dockrell didn't make it as his bowling has been bang average for a while now and McBrine and Simi Singh are ahead of him in the spinners pecking order. Difficult to see where he goes from here. Maybe he can do a Steve Smith-like re-invention, i.e focus on his batting - not turn a blind eye to ball tam....oops sorry I mentioned the war.. :D

Paddles wrote:It is mostly the same old players still who peaked long ago. I hope they start developing some new talent soon.

Not disagreeing with any of that. But having said, it is fitting that some of the class of 2007 get to retire with well deserved Test caps. The big challenge is after this summer when the retirements start coming in. We will basically have to rebuild our whole top order batting line-up while trying to justify our full membership. But that's for another day. We should just enjoy next weekend.

Good to have someone around with good knowledge of Irish cricket. I look forward to your updates on Irish cricket.

This forum lacks a WI fan, Pakistan fan, South Africa fan and our resident English and Afghan fans have gone AWOL.

He's not our best spinner anymore. Simple as that. The most surprising omission for me is that of Barry McCarthy however.

Wow!
Paul Stirling is just 27-28?
I feel like he's been playing forever. :-)
Good for Ireland that he's still pretty young.

He's a fine batsman - I wish him well.
In fact I wish all the Ireland cricketers well - they must be SO excited right now.
Whatever you say about other formats (and I don't mean to run them down), playing Test cricket for your country is special.

Go, Ireland!

Yes raja but there is an increasing possibility that we could lose him next year. From next year Irish players will be classed as overseas players at English county sides, meaning that the likes of Stirling and the Durham pair of Stuart Poynter and Barry McCarthy will have a difficult choice to make.

I doubt that restraint of trade will fly in court unless Britain actually pulls out of the EU via Brexit within that time frame.

Even then, Northern Ireland is still part of the UK. The South, well they'll have an issue to resolve.

Seems like Angus Fraser is forgetting where Europe's and the United Kingdom's borders are when comparing the Irish to West Indians or Zimbabweans.

Normally I'd support Pakistan against most teams but I make an exception for Ireland and Afghanistan.
I want them to do well in Test cricket.

But yes, against England, BCCI, SA, Australia, Windies, NZ and Zimbabwe, I support Pakistan.
Even against these teams, though I support Pak, I don't mind so much if they lose, as long as it's not against England or BCCI.

Against Bangladesh, I can't say. I think I'd support Bangladesh.

Against Sri Lanka also, it depends. I like SL a lot - so it's tough to pick sides in a Pak-SL game.

Looks like our promotion to the Test ranks will have to wait a day or two. Weather guys are predicting a washout on Friday and Saturday is looking dodgy. In other news talks are underway for a possible return tour in Pakistan this winter.

Pakistan team same as the one vs Northamptonshire

Imam ul HAQ and Ashraf debut

Rankin become 15th player who represent two different
Country in test cricket so 10 players will be debut for Ireland today

Rankin debut in 2013 before for England

Here's another fun fact - The Joyce family will be the first in over 30 years to have had a brother and sister with Test caps. Ireland Women actually played a Test in 2000 with a team that featured Ed's sister Isobel. Incidentally it was also against Pakistan.

241/6 now.
Recovered from 159/6.
This is one of the lessons Ireland will learn from playing against the established Test teams.
Each wicket will be hard earned - even those of tailenders.
That they've not let Pakistan run away with this is to their credit.
Well done.

A bit of history for you cricforumers. My picture of the first ball bowled in Irish Test Cricket. I didn't get the part a few seconds later when Imam Ul Haq almost had to go off injured before he faced a ball but anyway... Enjoy - I certainly enjoyed today anyway. Great first two sessions but as happens a lot on one day games, we hit a wall with that 7th wicket partnership.

Well well... Today was the other, not so nice side to 'welcome to Test Cricket'. Strange bit of symmetry between yesterday and today. While the first day was two good sessions followed by a bad one, today was a spirited fightback preceded by two absolute horror shows. Malahide has very swing-friendly conditions and given Pakistan's strength on that front, I was anxious to see how we coped. Well, I had my answer after 5 overs :) I was expecting us to have lost a couple before lunch but at 4 down for just 7, I was googling 'worst test innings ever'. Thankfully we avoided that.

Stirling and KOB counter-punched well. Pity Kev didn't get to 50 but I thought Gary Wilson was excellent considering he was batting with an injured arm - the reason he was batting at 9. Finishing with 130 is not bad considering the start. Porterfield and Joyce have managed to at least build a decent platform for tomorrow. We'll see what happens then. A few of our batsmen will be eager to avoid the dreaded pair.

Wicket is definitely bowlers favorable.

I would say well done Ireland. One thing can be said, I am not sure whether Bangladesh can beat Ireland in a Test match in this wicket or not. Hope, Irish improvement will be much faster thn Bangladesh.

So it looks like we're going the distance. Great effort in the middle out there today. Not the best start though with the fall of wickets after the Joyce run out - but still a huge improvement on yesterday. KOB will rightly get the headlines but I thought Stuart Thompson was brilliant today. He rode his luck a few times but there were also some excellent shots in his 50.

Advantage Pakistan again now. Pity O'Brien's knock ended with a bit of a lame shot. Was hoping for a target of closer to 200.

Well done Pakistan. Very composed knock by young Imam to see them home - he'll do very well. While there are many more lessons for us to learn in this format in the coming years, we can take a lot of positives from this match. But for now we need to focus on T20.

Inaugural Test Match: Ireland vs Pakistan; May 11-15, 2018 in Dublin

sorry to say but any team that can’t secure a draw on a rained out reduced 4 days match don’t deserve test status. let them play zimbabwe and bangladesh before they start playing against top 8 teams.

Pakistan did get a bit of a fright when they lost those 3 wickets early on in their second innings.
Plus, Ireland fought back well in their second innings to make a match of it.

Positives, for sure.

I'm going to paraphrase certain opinions I have heard on Irish cricket in recent years...

2004-2005

"Ireland should just play in the County Championship and not get notions like playing in World Cups... They're only part-timers and amateurs blah blah"

2011 (After beating 3 Full Members in World Cups and implementing a professional setup)

"No chance of Ireland ever playing Tests. They don't even have a First Class structure - Forget it!!!! They should just be happy beating the likes of Canada and Holland and get the odd day out at World Cups etc etc"

2018 (Ireland play their first test with eight of the playing XI coming from the Irish first class provincial competition)

Forgive Going South, for he doth not know how he trolls. Here's #1 team India beaten inside 3 days of play on their last tour:

I personally think Ireland right now is probably ahead of Zimbabwe, and shown that it really can jab and jive with the likes Ireland, SL, Pak, AFG, WI at home.

But the team is so very old already.

Ireland did themselves proud to get back into the game and were about 50 to 60 odd runs from making it a a victory or a draw.

Not bad at all after their first innings. Ireland really turned it around after that first innings crumbling and showed some grit.

http://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-series/ ... u19/squads. This is the future of Irish cricket. Losing will only improve the Ireland game ability wise and mentally.
