see. good IPL players should not play any matches at least 1 month before season start to recoup as all other cricket matches others than IPL are EXPENDABLE!

ICC makes it Mandatory from 2019'' no other country except Pakistan has to play international cricket for the month of April and May "

One month before seasons starts not possible because players have to have fulfils their obligation for their birth country team or unless (IPL GAVE THEM FULL SALARY FROM MARCH 7-APRIL 6 ) I
think its better they pull out before IPL than out of IPL after one week of IPL.

In IPL 2018, the franchisees may get the option of short transfer window midway during the tournament for those players who are uncapped and have played less than two matches till the half stage of the IPL. This provision made by the IPL Governing Council is prevalent in the football tournaments.

Other than football-style transfer window, Decision Review System (DRS) is also being introduced.

Don't know about that. Many cricket observers would freely admit that RCB have previously overly favored batting to bowling. Some would even criticse Kohli and his slow Gambhir like starts, except on much flatter pitches than those at Kolkata.

I'm all for analytics in cricket. I do not disregard statistical analysis as piss poor Moneyball thinking at all. In fact, looking at the alternative, the Royals paying Smith max confused me more than RCB paying Kohli max, as I am sure it did for many of thet casual non-stats focused fan.

Misty/ Tinsel, I do not know how old you are, but you need to gain some knowledge/ skill instead of showing such shallow knowledge/ ability. If you have some abilities then you will gain respect of people. Otherwise we are not interesting in your links which everyone can get on their own.

We all know youngsters who have great knowledge on some fields and they are rightly respected for that even by people many times their ages. Please try to gain respect of people instead of making a fool of yourself.

So I take it this is the general IPL discussion thread?

So, here is a question for you all.

There are 2 old T20 pro's who are getting closer to retirement being imposed on them, rather than by them. I suspect both are now in the career downturn, the variable is what the slope of the decline will be.

In fact, in some T20 leagues, they have been teammates.

Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle.

These guys with Malinga, despite their varying success in all forms of cricket, just scream T20 professionals and perhaps by some been derided as mercenaries.

But this year, RCB let Gayle go, in fact, he was not picked up at all in the Auction, until KXI picked up for his base price (2 cr). BMac was hired by Gayle's former club, RCB for a much healthier price having attracted some bids (3.6cr).

So, who got the better deal? Which player will best turn back the clock, and rain down sixes and get their teams off to good starts?

I think it may well be KXI's Gayle.

Gayle is a hit or miss player. not consistent. he play good every 4th match.
BMAC is more reliable batsman who is much better fielder compared to gayle.
but looking at the price tag and team needs, gayle bring more value.

Actually Gayle in career t20 plays well every 5th match. For the absurd average of over 40 at a SR close to 150.

But in IPL, you're right. It is 1 in 4, still averaging over 40, at a SR over 150. These are Kohli like numbers for consistency, but with a better SR, Kohli averages 37 at 130.

What this means is, if Gayle plays well every 5 games, and there's 14 games, chances are Gayle will go a long way to winning his side about 3. So from there, the rest of the team only need win 4 from 10. And in the finals, anything can happen.

McCullum averages 30 at SR 132. In the IPL this average slips to 27. His IPL 50 over stat is 1 in 7. And he is 1 in 6 overall. And he was seen as being more reliable after Gayle had a poor past two seasons. But why? BMac averaged 29 last year and 22 the year before it. Gayle 22 and 22.

So while the likes of Lynn and Gayle are labelled as hit and miss, the reality is when they hit, they go a long way to winning games, and they hit more often than people think, else they wouldn't have such good averages. But they make more low scores, as they don't play themselves in for long, which helps them maintain a higher SR at the expense of their average.

I think the bigger issue is not because of their "hit or miss" tactics that even the local likes of Dhawan lately, or Yusuf Pathan employ, but because they're taking up a valuable quota spot. So if there is a hit or miss batsmen not firing, the attention turns to the bowling unit and foreign player is sitting on the bench and not bowling at the expense of a fancy import player acting like a walking wicket.

I see that Gary Kirsten has been brought into help Dan Vettori with RCB, and I really believe that he may well need it. I just don't think RCB has got the mix right, despite having India's premier batsman, and arguably the world's in ABDV. If going in a new direction was RCB's goal, they could have brought in Amla instead of BMac. And mixed QDK and ABDV with Amla and Kohli.

Time will tell. But right now I would suggest that Gayle is winning his point to prove.

And I am not so sure that Dan or BMac will survive a bad IPL season this year. If Dan keeps picking him, and BMac keeps failing, and RCB keep losing, and Gayle keeps making runs, Dan may just lose his job.

Southee, CDG, Anderson, and BMac all under Dan V with Woakes and M Ali. This is a very peculiar squad. I guess the high salaries of ABDV and Kohli with Chahal and Yadav may have caused this anamoly. But plenty of teams have plenty of stars.

I would drop BMac, replace him with Anderson, open with Kohli, and push Mandeep Singh up the order. Bring in a local batsman - if Vohra, Patel, or anyone are any good, and drop a bowler or Negi. All this is If Anderson was in form, and had bowled well at all of note lately. Which he really hasn't.

That leaves Moeen as an option? But he's struggling for form and been dropped by England recently. So that leaves CDG, except he isn't yet a good bowler under pressure and has far from allayed concerns of reading leg spinners well, of which there are plenty in the IPL.

This is the IPL, where people may purchase cricketers from all over the planet. A serious limitation of the current NZ cricket team, should not be passed onto one club! And then further compounded with England's! And where is the death bowler option? Southee? He is an opening swing bowler.

So I'm getting in before the RCB fans pull out the knives for Dan Vettori. Don't get me wrong, I am more than happy to champion Kiwi cricketers. I just think DV has slipped up a lot, and am not sure the RCB faithful will forgive him this time if the team does not turn around it's performances soon.

And to do this, Woakes really ought to be batting ahead of Negi and Sundar. He should be used in an Andre Russell type manner and bat regularly in games. Let him do what he has been doing for England in the last 10 overs of ODI cricket, in the last 10 overs of t20 cricket. Woakes really can bat well, so let him bat more balls.

I don't think Gayle being let go was necessarily a poor decision, but why hire McCullum when Gayle outperformed in the BPL t20 league they played together recently? Gayle now making runs will rub salt intot he wounds of RCB fans if BMac continues to fail. And as for the rest of this squad, it is light on complete role players. And one of the complete role players is meant to be BMac. Who hasn't been the most consistent in IPL in 2017 or 2016. His 2017/18 BBL was 24.8 at 135. Include CPL and BPL for all 2017/18, he is 25 at 124. Hiring Sunil Narine as an opening batsman all rounder makes more sense to me.

This despite Chahal, Yadav, Mandeep and Kohli, who are 4 fine local cricketers.

big names bring ticket sale & T shirt sales and other stuff. BMAC is a big name compared to other replacements. Even though gets 27 average he sure saves atleast 20 runs more by his fielding. ofcourse RCB overpaid him as they are clueless on many things, worst managed team.

Just a reminder that RCB chose to RETAIN Sarfaraz Khan.
They retained Kohli, ABDV and Sarfaraz.
Their decisions - before the auction, at the auction, before a match (picking the 11), on the field of play - all mind-boggling.

To think that they retained Sarfaraz and not KL Rahul.

I didn't know this.

Not only is that true, and alluded to by me before this particular match, last winter (before September) he was serving up crap having been injured and out of the team with CDG taking his place the summer previous (2016/17). So he hasn't bowled a lot at all in 18 months due to injurirs - and what he has - has not been his best.

But to leave him to bowl the 20th - or in the final 4 overs at all to me was poor captaincy. Especially as Woakes only bowled 3 overs.

Corey is not a 'death bowler'. Although, at his best, he can consistently bowl a lot of short balls late in the innings. But I doubt he has the physical confidence in his back surgery right now to try this so soon in his return to bowling. He does a good role in the final 10 overs, but I'd doubt besides injury if he'd ever have bowled the last over of a game for NZ in limited overs cricket.

It is a case of little "success" leading to disproportionately high rewards that Sarfaraz Khan was unable to handle gracefully. We saw it in case of Vinod Kambli and Irfan Pathan as well. They at least played international cricket for a while. In case of Sarfaraz Khan, it is a case of a little IPL money going over his and his family's head which has made them arrogant.

I like the analysis in these Cricinfo talking points pieces. I hope that Cricinfo starts doing these for international cricket matches involving all countries and not just India. But I guess the global demand for cricket information is going to be Indian dominant.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/ ... g-asterisk

Royal Challengers picked Corey Anderson over Brendon McCullum to get a sixth bowling option. But few would have expected him to bowl his full quota of overs while Chris Woakes, Washington Sundar and Chahal didn't complete theirs. The decision not to bowl Woakes out was a particularly curious one. He bowled his first two overs in the Powerplay and went for 16 and was then only brought on in the 19th over.

Woakes was Royal Challengers' most expensive buy in the auction, at INR 7.4 crore (USD 1.16 million approx). The decision to bring him on so late despite Mumbai scoring quickly off the other bowlers was either a miscalculation or a sign that Kohli has lost faith in him.

The first sentence is not true as RCB dropped Negi for Khan as well from the previous game. So a 6th option already existed. What RCB did was change the option to try and provide more batting strength by replacing a batsman and a bowler, with a batting allrounder and a batsman.

But from then on the article makes sense. I personally think it was poor captaincy regardless of whether Kohli has lost faith in Woakes (unreasonably) or whether he made a miscalculation. Either way, after 3 overs, I was sure that Anderson had finished his spell for the night and would not be bowling in the final 4overs - let alone the last over.

When his team is chasing 214, you don't expect to see Kohli batting on 40 at a strike rate of 111.11 in the 13th over. But, as he explained after the game, the RCB captain had given up on the chase, as too many wickets had fallen, and was trying to ensure they didn't fall too far behind on net run-rate. In 10 completed seasons of the IPL, teams have missed making the final four because of net run-rate as much as four times. So clearly Kohli knows what he's talking about.

He started quickly, racing to 18 off 11 balls, but once Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers fell in the same over, he knuckled down and tried to avoid a huge loss. He got going again towards the end and finished with a healthy strike rate of 148.38. With Royal Challengers reaching 167, they stayed ahead of bottom-dwellers Delhi Daredevils on the points table.

Not sure whether it was wise for Kohli to give up after only QDK and ABDV were dismissed. 2 wickets down time to give up? It doesn't display much confidence in Mandeep Singh or Corey Anderson who have both pulled off incredible innings before.

Perhaps I am being harsh on Kohli. But while KW would not give up, his slow starts in t20 needs to be remedied as well. So I think I am harsh on 3 of the fab 4, Smith, Kohli, and KW, with Root the player I think that matches the tempo in a high scoring T20 game the best, despite his modest career 125SR due to the differing conditions that he plays in. Shame noone thought to buy him for this IPL. I would have. He averages over 50 in all 3 formats in India. To think that RCB bought BMac at 3.6 crore over Joe Root at 1.5 crore, is really amusing to me.

QDK
VK
Root
ABDV

Now there is an IPL fab 4. Mind you, I still would have bought a local keeper bat over QDK.

One for predictions.
One for rest of IPL discussion.

I want a separate one for predictions cos it's a daily thing and I don't want anyone's prediction to get missed out.

The rest can be in one thread.
We don't need two threads to bash RCB.
Can do it in one.
