Irani Trophy 2017-18

Postby raja » Fri Mar 16, 2018 4:51 am

So this is on now - today is the 3rd day.

For those who don't know, the Irani Trophy is played between the Ranji winners of a season and the Rest of India.

I remember the time when Karnataka (Ranji winners) took on Rest of India (1974-75?) and Gundappa Vishwanath scored 200* in the second innings. I think Sudhakar Rao top-scored with 115 in the first innings. Just typing from memory, I might be wrong.

A couple of years later, a very young Dilip Vengsarkar shot into the national limelight with a brilliant 110 for Mumbai against the Rest of India.

I think Sivaramakrishnan also got noticed in an Irani game in the early 80s, though I might be wrong. He dismissed Gavaskar - and that was HUGE in those days. Or was it a Duleep Trophy game (South vs West)? I don't remember now. Or maybe he dismissed him both times. :-)

Anyway, back to today.

Vidarbha (current Ranji champions) have batted for 2 days already and amassed 598 for the loss of just 3 wickets.

Wasim Jaffer (40 yrs now!) still going strong on 285*.

Absolute batting track - no real help for quicks or spinners.

Ashwin couldn't have asked for a worse wicket to get back some bowling confidence.

Today is the third day and it is raining. I hope this rain does not rob Vidarbha's chances in the match. The track will not look flat when Vidarbha bowls to RoI batsmen.

182.3
S Kaul to Jaffer, out Bowled!! That's a ripper! This is unplayable for most batsmen and imagine doing it to a batsman batting on 286. Jaffer's marathon is over by a special nut from Kaul who is pumped up. The indipper that moves sharply from a fuller length, Jaffer didn't probably account for the sharp movement and played down the wrong line. The stumps ended up in a real mess. Take a bow though, Jaffer! It's been a top, top knock. Gets a standing ovation from his mates in the dressing room. Jaffer b S Kaul 286(431) [4s-34 6s-1]

Vidarbha 800/7 declared.
Rest of India 90/5. So the wicket is not as flat as allegedly belived when Vidarbha were batting. :)

I switched on the TV to watch his bowling. The match is being shown live on Star Sports. He bowls at 122-126 kmph pace. So at his pace he is not a bowler who can create problems to International batsmen. So he is another Abhimanyu Mithun.

Umesh Yadav is also playing this match. Though he has not taken many wickets, he definitely looks in a different league from Gurbani.

Smart recovery by Rest of India.
They're still going to lose - but at least they're reaching a respectable score.

295/6 now.
Vihari on 114, Jayant Yadav on 88.

That is true that his pace is less. However, Bhuvi also started out with 125 kmph. However, Gurbanis strength is his swing, that is why he was the star in Ranji trophy.

Gurbani if he ramps up his pace by 10 kmph will be a threat.

This pitch is an absolute road, even on this pitch Gurbani took wickets.
