If the home series against SL was of any value at all, it was in showing how poor BCCI's catching is.
Even Kohli admitted as much.

They could get away with it at home against Sri Lanka, but in a series in South Africa, it's going to cost them much more.
They know this - and still they haven't raised their level.

Vijay took a sharp catch to dismiss Elgar. Pandya's run-out of Amla was also smart thinking.
But overall, it's been poor by the Indians.

When Parthiv was picked instead of Saha, that was my first concern.
He cost BCCI a series win in Australia in 2003-04 when his multiple missed chances allowed Waugh and Katich to save the day for the Aussies at the SCG. To date, BCCI is searching for that first overseas series win in Australia.

But since Saha has a mysterious niggle, Parthiv comes right back into the playing XI.
Rather convenient, isn't it?

I've nothing against Parthiv - he's a gutsy batsman, but I'm sceptical of keepers whose keeping is suspect (but hey, he's a decent batsman).
They might be ok for T20 and even ODIs, but in Tests, I want a keeper who not only doesn't miss chances, but also grabs those half-chances.

Saha misses the odd one too, but with the gloves he's definitely better than Parthiv.
And not that bad a batsman either.
Too bad he got that mysterious niggle.

Looking at the form of Team India batsmen, I would be tempted to play Parthiv purely as a batsman and Saha as a keeper. Parthiv scored (Rahul + Pujara + Rohit) runs by himself, its that bad.

But Parthiv is suspect as a keeper, he always has been.

Impressed with debutant Lungi Ngidi. He touched 151 kmph. Was real fast, tested Kohli, Kohli managed an inside edge to keep one out, Ngidi also bowled real fast to Parthiv.

This is v good news. As a cricket fan, I want to see high quality and deserving test players get the quota spots for Safrica. I don't like the quotas weakening Safrica.

I am still not sold on Ngidi. Only 9 FC games before this test. But what do i know Paul Adams only played 5 FC Games

If and that is a big if SA can bundle India out soon with not much of a lead when AB comes out he will go guns Blazing. Sa will hope to first make sure they cannot lose. So they will need to set India 350+ with and give them at least 4 sessions to bowl them out

Excellent from Kohli but again the Indian bowlers giving away too many runs. I understand it's difficult with ABDV at the crease but this is where the first Test was arguably lost and this one looks like going down the same route. We already know India can't chase.

This isn't the wicket we expected before the match started.
Not surprised at all that Kohli capitalised on this wicket - it's just the type to suit him.
Credit to him - this is a high-quality attack.

Both Markram and Amla were unlucky to get shooters.

BCCI in with a very good chance here. I don't expect SA to set them an imposing target.

Morne has said that 250 should be a safe target for SA to set.
Jonty said 250-280.

They grossly underestimate BCCI's batting.
Pujara was unlucky to get run out in the first innings.
Kohli has scored a century in each innings in a Test before.
Rohit is desperate - and hungry - for runs.
Pandya won't make the same mistake again.

BCCI is hungry to level the series.

I think SA need a target of at least 350.
Even that isn't safe, but that's bare minimum.
BCCI is a batting powerhouse.

Is this going to be a draw?

Hows the pitch playing?

Nice trolling by Morne there.

I think ABDV will want 330 to 350 if the pitch isn't a mine field - which means he better up the tempo today to put India in tonight.

Faf would bat all day if he was still captain.

If we see the scoreline, it will say SA 1 - 0 and ahead in this test also.

But in both tests, sessions have been swinging back and forth. If India had batted better, results would have been the reverse..

What an absolutely fascinating last session.
Few better sights in cricket than seeing quicks thundering in on a wicket with variable bounce - with the batting side being BCCI.
Had Kohli got a 50 in this innings, I'd have rated it very highly - but he showed yet again that he isn't quite upto the standard, when he's up against a truly top-quality attack.
Lungi was awesome - I really like the guy.

Parthiv once again showed he's a gutsy guy.
Inspite of a nasty hit on the ribcage (I hope he's ok), he hung in there till the end of day's play.

If only his keeping were more reliable...

7 catches dropped is huge for India, not only Parthiv, others too dropped catches. Bowling changes also inexplicable - only Kohli knows.

There's so much money in cricket in India now, it shows in the vastly improved standards of batting and bowling.
But if you keep dropping chances, you're going to always struggle against a good team.
I hope somebody shows Kohli and the entire team a video of all the dropped chances - not once, but again and again.
It needs to sink in.
For a captain who is otherwise such a perfectionist, it's surprising that Kohli hasn't raised catching standards in the side.

Vastly improved batting? VVS, Sachin, Dravid, Sehwag, Gambhir and Ganguly been vastly improved upon?
Law 31.6 - benefit of the doubt for an dismissal appeal goes to the batsman
A third umpire call for a run out or stumping is a referral, not a review.
