Not only is this a shaky batting line-up that Australia has, it also has batsmen like Warner who are one ball away from an atrocious, unnecessary, shot.
In the 1984-85 series against England at Delhi, Gavaskar (captain) was livid when Kapil Dev, having just hit a 6, went for another big one off off-spinner Pocock when the game was in the balance and India were fighting hard to save the game. India folded - and the series was level at 1-1.

Gavaskar promptly dropped Kapil for the upcoming Calcutta Test - a decision that shocked many. He was booed at Calcutta - the crowd wanted Kapil. Gavaskar was so fed up, he made a statement that he never wanted to play at the Eden Gardens again.

Competely irrelevant to this game of course, but I couldn't help seeing a parallel.

Very similar match situation, a deficit of over 100 in the first innings, last day of the match. Reasonable chance of a draw if you just put a price on your wicket. But I guess Warner and Kapil (and Sehwag) are similar in one respect. You can give them all the advice in the world, but they will just go out and bat the only way they know - try to hit the bowler out of the park. They might show restraint for a bit - but you know they're itching to let it go.

It's just SO unfair that everytime we have to look at Smith for a rescue act.

For his sake I want Australia to save this - but I know it isn't going to happen.

Am beginning to feel a lot like I used to feel in the Lara days.

Smith faced 1162 balls in on-going series beating his previous record of 1135 balls in 2014 series vs India.smith has one more test to go.

567* in 6 innings with couple of innings coming up.(smith)
382 by Warner with 2 innings coming up.

Reminded of Lahore & Karachi 1978 - India vs Pakistan.
Last day, Indians playing and praying for a draw - denied both times by Pakistani batsmen scoring quickly (Asif, Miandad, Imran...)

And Lord's 1982 - India in England. What a second-innings blitz that was from Kapil! 89 off 55 balls! Heading for the fastest-ever Test hundred.
And Vengsarkar, with a superb hundred.

Of course Australia are in a far worse situation right now, so defeat is the only option for them. Still, a 5th day 2nd or 3rd session has its own memories.

Reminds me of the recent India Sri Lanka test at Eden Gardens.Rain washed out most of day 1 and 2. India collapsed on a sporting track save Pujara.Last day, Sri Lanka ended at 75 for 7 with bad light saving the day for SL.Dickwella tried a lot of delaying tactics like stopping Shami in his follow through twice which helped waste time and paid off.The most hostile Shami spell in recent times was seen on the 5th day.

re ball tampering
its interesting how England and their media supporters simply make up their own rules when they're at fault

comparing to short pitched bowling is the biggest false equivalence I've ever seen

Geoffrey Boycott is another who rates Josh Hazlewood.

Looks like a draw now with Smith and Mitch closing the shutters. The Poms needed Smith by tea to have any chance. Captain Cool brings up yet another ton.
Smith and Root call off proceeding with an hr still to play. No surprises with Cook MOM.

England still totally on top - and should clinch this in the last session.
They're just making the game exciting for us, taking it to the last overs of the day.
Nice of them to give the crowd at the G a full day's cricket.

If Australia can somehow get to a lead of 150, I believe they would be out of danger as England may not go for the win considering less no of overs.

No way. England will go for the win. They want to win at least one Test in this series - and this is a great chance to do so.
Still plenty of overs in the day - 35 still to go (after 2 overs for change, still 33).

Of course, the whole thing is only hypothetical - a lead of 150 is still 80 runs away.
Expecting a collapse any moment.

We've been robbed.
If rain hadn't cost us time yesterday we could've set them a proper target today.
Our bowlers would have done the job and pulled off a fantastic victory.
Anyway, 3-0 is better than 3-1.

Smith and Root call off proceedings with an hr still to play. Poms showed some grit this test but denied yet again by the amazing Steven Smith and a pancake (as Boycott called it) of a deck.

Diplomatc by Root when asked at the press conference if the MCG pitch was test standard.

Cook says nothing concrete on his future.

Cricket Victoria boss calls for MCG pitch reboot
Jason Phelan
AAP / an hour ago
SHARE
Cricket Victoria chief executive Tony Dodemaide believes it might be time to dig up the much-maligned MCG wicket and start again.

The flat, lifeless pitch has drawn a barrage of criticism, with many thinking it is not a worthy wicket for a Boxing Day Ashes Test match.

Ultimate responsibility for the preparation of the MCG wicket falls to venue operators the Melbourne Cricket Club, but Cricket Victoria are a key stakeholder.

The Victoria Bushrangers have played out three Sheffield Shield draws in three games at their home ground this season, with players from both sides dismayed at how little the wicket offers.

"We have been working with the curators to try different things to get variation later in the game," Dodemaide told ABC Grandstand.

"We need to talk about it more.

"If these are the original pitches that came into the ground, they're probably nearly 15 years old now, and it might be that the life span of a particular drop-in pitch might be shorter than what we saw for the pitches that were all-year round.

"So it may be that we need to dig them out every so often (and) start again.

"That sweet spot for a pitch's life span might be a lot younger than what we're used to in a normal pitch."

Former Australian No.6 Glenn Maxwell has been batting at No.3 for the Bushrangers this season.

He has made three half-centuries on the maligned wicket, but is no fan of it.

"The way we've seen the Shield games go this year ... we've seen some pretty uninspiring draws that haven't looked like getting a result," Maxwell told the ABC.

"Teams have batted comfortably for days. It just doesn't break up, the rubble doesn't go anywhere. When you have drop-ins it seems to hold firm."

Just think if our bowlers had to toil on decks like the MCG for an entire series. They would be pulling out their hair. The worlds greatest blocker (debatable with Bill Lawry) called the deck a pancake.. he was being nice. Betting both skippers had other names for it.

The best they could get out of it was a draw. :lmao:

raja you have crossed the line now. :rj:

Well, he didn't get a 100 in the first innings. Got only 76.
And his second innings 100 was a small one.
Counts as a failure for me.

England got away with just 180-odd runs from Smith in this Test.

This recent bad run of form for Smith is a worrying sign for Sydney

Usually batsmen are happy to go off the ground if there's no milestone to be achieved and the match is dead and buried.

But not Smith. This is what he had to say.

"Shame we had to call it off in the last hour, could have had another hour out there," Smith quipped. "It's good fun. I'm enjoying it at the moment. I feel like I'm hitting the ball really well and hopefully I can end the series really well in Sydney.

:-)

Australian cricket has been embarrassed by the ICC rating the MCG drop-in pitch for the Boxing Day Ashes Test as "poor" following a dull draw in which only 24 wickets were taken over five days.
