650 is enough to ensure we cant lose, by the time England scored 450 they wouldn't have enough time to bowl Australia out.

800 is only a ~400 lead
England wont get 400 but they might get 300 as it could be done in a little over 2 sessions at the WACA

You wouldnt want to give them a 100 lead going into the final 2 sessions. Who knows how the cracks will behave late on day 5.

Will Smiths 229* trump all the other contenders?

A day of records at the WACA and here are a few of those, courtesy Deepu Narayanan, resources cricbuzz.com

Highest 5th wicket stands vs England:
405 D Bradman/ S Barnes, SCG, 1946
332*A Border/ S Waugh, Leeds, 1993
301 S Smith / M Marsh, Perth, 2017

Steve Smith 229*:
+ Second Australia player to score 200 in an Ashes Test at home since 1971 (OTHER: J Langer 250, MCG, 2002)
+ Second non-opener to score 200 for Aus in an Ashes Test at home after after Don Bradman in 1946 (OTHER: Bob Cowper 307, MCG, 196)

This is the first instance of both teams registering 200+ stands for the fifth wicket in a Test.
D Malan - J Bairstow 237
S Smith - M Marsh 201*

Father and two sons with Test hundreds:
Lala, Mohinder & Surinder Amarnath
Geoff, Shaun & Mitchell Marsh

Highest scores by captains at the WACA:
229* S Smith v England, 2017
176 B Simpson v India, 1977
149 C Lloyd v Australia, 1975
146 V Richards v Australia, 1988

Highest scores in Ashes Tests at the WACA:
229* Smith, 2017
181 M Marsh, 2017
171 Ian Redpath, 1971
162 Chris Broad, 1986
140 Dawid Malan, 2017

If you are going to suffer collapses of 3 for 12 then 4/560 is the time to do it.

Take note Aussie bowler supporters, Anderson 4/116, seems good but Garbage, just like 3/92 when 2 were the tail of England, and that is a mighty big tail from England. Amazing how tail-enders make the bowling seem a lot better than it actually was.

England racing towards victory.
Just 2 balls bowled and already one run on the board.
Make that 3 from 3.

2-1.

Only 2 results possible for the series:
England win 3-2 and retain the Ashes
England level the series 2-2 and retain the Ashes

Either way England retain the Ashes.

This is a vulnerable Aussie side - I expect it to collapse second time round, handing over the Test to England.
Think Headingley 1981.

2-1 still very much on the cards.
Congrats, Boycs!

Innings defeats for England or Defeats anyway, only more rains could saves England from Humiliation away from their own back yard.

I can belived them as Quality team if they winning out side England

As a diehard England supporter - and an optimist - I strongly believe we will win this.
Even at Headingley 1981, we were staring down the barrel.
Malan & Bairstow are in terrific form - no reason why both cannot hit a century in each innings (like the Chappell brothers did in 1973-74 against NZ).
And we bat all the way down to 11.

I keep saying this is a vulnerable Aussie batting line-up. Ok, so they've managed a few runs this series but under pressure in the 4th innings, cracks and all, I can easily see them folding up for very little.

Looks like we're back in the series with 2-1.

average December rainfall for Perth is 9mm, which is FA
I think we're getting it all in this test match and then some

incredibly rare for a Perth test to be rain affected.

Forecast still dated 1620 yesterday is for possible storms and winds severe up to 45 kmh.

We will know more when the Mets get out of bed.

Radar shows a single mass about 50/100 k out from Perth with nothing behind it.

Depends on the scope of their radar if there is more outside the range.

The winds could be a factor and how much rain they got last night.

Make of this what you will.

Perth for Monday Cloudy. Very high chance of showers, becoming less likely in the early afternoon. The chance of a thunderstorm early this morning. Damaging winds possible early this morning. Winds W 30 to 45 km/h turning SW 35 to 45 km/h in the late morning then decreasing to 25 to 35 km/h in the late afternoon.

Smith and Mitch would have broken the Border/S Waugh 5th wkt record and pushed Bradman/Barnes had Jimmy not gotten two balls to hit those cracks. Hats off to the man for his accuracy.

Haze tried but could not hit a crack. He did tho bowl two beauties to have England in early trouble. Quite a c+b specially for a big man, to get rid of Cookie.

Malan and Bairstow can make the baggies bat again but can the Poms make sufficient to put us under pressure on a wearing track?

The updated forecast is better for afternoon play at least. Now 5/15ml for Monday.

The radar at the moment shows nuisance showers coming in from the sea with a few hours till scheduled play.

it doesn't rain very often in Perth, but when it does, its a deluge

Only 2 results possible for the series:
England win 3-2 and retain the Ashes
England level the series 2-2 and retain the Ashes

Either way England retain the Ashes.

With Better weather, you may Change your comments but 4th and 5th test coming up.

I would settle for half a days play plus 1 hour extra time.

The last Test at the WACA could be the 1st one ruined by weather.
The bad news is water got under the Covers overnight and there are wet patches on the wkt, so play unlikely before Lunch.
