Did you bake like my brother and I at the SCG last summer or were you lucky enuff to get an undercover spot. Luckily it was not a real stinker in Brissie. They will not be replacing Haze with the Birdman. Haze does have to bowl better than he did yesterday that is for sure. I said he should have played that last Shield match for the Blues to get some much needed match practice. Starc also struggled without any swing to call on. Agree where was the tearaway Cummins. Not sure he stopped the speed gun much avove 142kph. Needs to crank it up this morning.

Baggers I don't know what test you're watching on the TV and what the commentators are saying, but I've watched cricket at the Gabba now for 40 years, and this is a typical traditional Gabba pitch. You obviously forgot the roads they produced in 2015 which Boult and Southee had to bowl on 4/550+ or last year Amir and Ali had to bowl on 400+, but those were Australia batting first. The traditional Gabba pitch, there is enough for quality new ball bowlers to make a few breakthroughs and as the ball gets older it means more work and you see middle order partnerships till the second new ball. an example would be 2010/11 Ashes England were 4/125 and Bell batting at 6 made runs to get respectability in the total, Australia were 5/140 until Hussey and Haddin put on a 300 run partnership. Can't really look at the last Ashes test at the Gabba as Mitchell Johnson ripped England apart, but even then Australia in the 1st innings were 6/132 until the Haddin and Johnson put on a 100 run partnership.

From what I saw from the first 2 days, there was plenty of bounce and carry to the keeper, and quality bowlers take advantage of that. No-one told Starc to spray the balls all over the place. No-one told Hazlewood to bowl a line wide of off stump, allowing the England batsmen to let it pass, with no danger of losing their wicket. They wasted the conditions. Yesterday they did the same thing with the 2nd new ball (something like first 20 overs with the new ball and England scored 50 easy runs), and we were waiting for Cummins to come on and that is when the action started with Cummins and Lyons. Cummins should be taking the new ball because a batsman trying to get his eye in won't want a 145+km thunderbolt AT THE STUMPS. But even with all the garbage they bowled they did achieve what we thought they had to for a par score of 300 for those Gabba conditions, thanks to the unlikely hero Lyons and the pace of Cummins.
And what happened when England bowled with the new ball. They aimed at the stumps and Australia were 4/76. But then the work started for them and Marsh and Smith are pushing the 100 run partnership. I cannot see England dislodging these two any time soon and a 200 run partnership could be on the board, but I have been known to be wrong, but that's test cricket.

Australia will win this test easily if in the 2nd innings the Australian new ball bowlers bowl the correct line, England do look a bit fragile from what I saw when the bowlers make them play. Forget the wide of off line garbage they bowled in the 1st innings hoping the batsmen play a false shot, this is England, they are the masters of leaving garbage alone. And if we do lose, which is extremely unlikely, it will be the fault of poor bowling and the inability to learn from their mistakes in the first innings, and an idiot by the name of David Warner who played one of the dumbest shots I've ever seen, including Damien Martyn's poor shot that cost him his Australian career. That shot is not in any coaching manual I've ever read. Australia should be only 2/165....you could see the smoke emanating from his ears from that brain explosion. He better watch that there wasn't much there to begin with.

Bolero you watched the highlights of Starc bowling short, i watched it live, it was actually a deliberate tactic by the Aussies and it worked. Ali & Malan were very comfitable against Line & Length bowling @4/246 till Starc done the same thing as Johnson done 4 years, come around the wkt and bowled short at the left handers. Eng lost 6/56 after that.
Overdone it a bit but that was probably a deliberate attempt to rattle the England Tail Enders.

WEAK my ass, Bollinger, Abbott and Copeland would be first choice picks in almost every Test nation except Australia you goose and O'Keefe is a pretty decent slow bowler.

Verity, this is a real stretch. The Strayan attack isn't even as good as Safrica's and Pakistan's new breed while not all yet battle proven as they are arguably in odi look like they could be on the cusp of something special. The England's attack does very well at home and NZ's Wagner has been on fire for a few years now while the world thinks its still all Boult.

O'keefe is more likely to make more test teams worldwide than the three seamers if he was sober more oft.

Day 3 forecast.

50% chance of rain range 0/3 ml.
3 ml wouldn't warrant a raincoat in Qld.

So it will be a full day's play if the forecast holds up.

North Sydney oval stops him from holing out as well with it's kiwi rugby sized boundaries.

Its called Eden Park, Lancaster Park and Carisbrook are not used for cricket these days contrary to popular belief. Even if you include McLean Park, it is turf notice too.

But we need something better for cricket in Auckland. Eden Park is an issue :/

Broad gets Marsh for 51.

Nothing ball (but a bit of a slower cutter) - bit short to drive at, but Marsh extends out and plays well in front of himself and spoons the ball upto mid off.

Paine in.

I wanted to steal this 9 lives nickname for Henry Niccolls. But he's more like a cancer that has spread accross all 3 formats.

Jimmy get Paine with a fairly innocuous line n length delivery which Paine nicks to keeper. Straightened a touch with movement.

Smith just keeps finding the middle of the bat but is going slow 80(200+). He may open up if Cummins gets out?

Given Straya bats last, I think even is about a Aussie 30 to 50 run 1st innings lead.

I expect Straya to bowl more aggresively earlier in the 2nd innings tho.

Good fight by Cummins here.

I've noticed in this match that both Steve Smith and Shaun Marsh are noticeably overweight.
This may explain their recent troubles in the field.

Something is wrong with the CA dietary plan. Pat Howard what are you doing???????????

If you look at Marsh's old man you can see something is wrong with the meal plans in that household.
Even Geoff's former opening partner 'Babs' is in better nick these days.

I would take Cummins anyday in my team if I were captain. He is a hard trier, he gave it his all even on the flat Indian decks. Kohli and co were very wary of him. Was clocking 145 kmph plus all the time. And he is a good batsman too. Doesnt give his wicket easily.

Thats what you want from a player.

Smith is a batsman if you dont get him early , he will make you pay big time. Same with Kohli, he is at his most vulnerable till 10. If he gets into his groove, he will play shots at will.

Even Geoff's former opening partner 'Babs' is in better nick these days.

Englands attack looks a bit pedestrian when you don't have Anderson & Broad bowling with any shine on the ball.

Time for Smith to hit out now. Can't rely on these last two to hang around for long.

Today is the reason why Test cricket stands out from the rest. The mental wearing down of the batsmen by applying radical field placings and a concerted plan of attack. A great battle of the minds by two very combative teams and captains. Great cricket great theatre.

A few years back Geoff Marsh hosted dinner for four at a WA restaurant.

The protein component was 24 Lamb chops for him and his male guests.

I believe the beer component was similarly adequate.

A lot of bad dietary advice in the media lately has only made Australia's obesity problem worse. Pat Howard being the dope that he is has probably bought into it.

Shami looked really obese in the last test. Has anyone in Indian camp bothered about off season / injury training ? When he was bowling 140 + kmph thunderbolts, his tummy was shaking during run up. He looked noticeably fat for a pace bowler.
