30 run lead would be handy.

Did Smith do the best thing in trusting the 10 and 11 or should he have farmed the strike and had a bash at everything?

Starc is not physically fit ever since he re-return after long Lay off ( injury etc) his fitness is questionable for 5 day Test.

Cummins/ smith batted 193 ball plus together.i wonder how Cummins bats so long, I think England missed Ben Stokes today ( Ozzie were 209 for 7 at one stage )

Agreed. But it'll take far more than 3 wickets at 28ea for me to change my mind.

Nice 40 today but its not like Pattinson is Chris Martin like with the bat neither.

Pattinson might as well be Dennis Lillee. He has about as much relevance to the current squad.

Already are with these two wickets. Deck has quickened up significantly for Cummins and Starc to give the Poms plenty of chin music.

Rumours abound that Anderson has picked up a side strain. The advantage of keeping them out there for longer even if runs arent scored.

Had problems with the landing area when bowling over the wkt, foot kept sliding.

You can say whatever you like about Smiths Captaincy but you certainly cant accuse him of not leading from the front. Was averaging 71 as captain before his 141no.

He's upto 72.46 now. Freaking run machine. No 4th innings 100s yet, but I wouldn't bet against him remedying this tbh.

Day 4 forecast

Fine another full days play.

England need 200 or more and Australia need to avoid a collapse when they chase.

Surely the top three Aussies will contribute this time.

Lyon is the key today.

I wouldn't trust that forecast too much, there is a lot of heavy cloud around this morning and the humidity is high.
I think England will want 300 minimum.

I wish him good Luck as he level with Ashwin other day ( 48 wickets in 2017 to both ) only Herath (52w) & Rabada (54w)
Ahead of Lyon

Root tried everything to prise the unmovable Smith from the crease. What extraordinary concentration and application by the master batsman. Figures now show he is the best since Bradman. Chinks in the armor of our top 6. Khawaja is a walking wicket when the spinner comes on. Handscomb's deep in the crease technique is like a red rag to a bull for Broad and Anderson. Warner is losing his powers.

Lyon is the key today. Not sure about that. But I do concede Lyon is in career best form. I would like to see Smithy tell Starc and Cummo to pepper Root and co with bouncers.. ruffle the feathers.. soften them up. They look vulnerable to the short ball.

The highest 2nd innings successful run chase was in 1951 when Australia scored 7/236. Anything over 200 will be a hard chase for Australia. Hope they leave Lyon on at one end and rotate the pace attack at the other. Lyon getting great turn and bounce.

Lyon's on fire here.

Great table posted by Misty for the year. But please save the wicket by wicket horse race until the boxing day tests in Safrica and Straya. There is a LOT of cricket left in the year.

Huge wicket by Haze - Root gone trapped in front.

England 5 down with a 87 lead.

Even with Bond's tactics - England needs a lot more runs.

The Aussies seem to have found a weakness with Root, he's going to cop a few more full balls at middle stump.
